Dear Parishioners.Each week our pastor, Fr. Joe, writes us a message and they

are really good ones. But, having been a pastor, I remember thinking that once in awhile it would be nice not to have to perform this not entirely unpleasant yet necessary weekly pas-toral duty. So, let me give him a week’s rest as we begin this new year by writing a message.

We are coming to the close of the Christmas Season with our celebration this weekend of the Epiphany. The season has been a time when all of us concentrated on the wonderful love which is at the heart of our Christian faith: that God so loved us as to become one with us in Jesus of Nazareth. If we imagine a beautiful painting of a young woman staring down at her newborn infant, we are at the heart of our Chris-tian faith. The first consequence of this faith is the realization that every human being is sacred, for we are all sisters and brothers of the infant Jesus. Indeed, our faith tells us that this is true whether human beings recognize this fact or not. For God has willed it so. Therefore, the human failure to recog-nize this fact does not undo its reality. As Hopkins wrote: “-- for Christ plays in ten thousand places, lovely in limb and lovely in eyes not his, to the Father through the features of men’s faces.”

As we begin this new year, we need to take this “conse-quence” of our Christian faith more seriously. We have not yet fully realized the scope of our belief in the Incarnation of God in Jesus. Saints realize it. That is why a woman from Albania cared for the dying on the streets of a city in India. That is why a Belgian priest cared for lepers in Hawaii. And that is why the Church has endorsed the appearance of Jesus’ mother as a brown woman at Tepeyac in Mexico. And yet students at Boston College had to call for demonstrations this fall to fight racist remarks being scribbled on campus prop-erty. We would think that such a thing would not happen at a university, which calls itself Catholic and Jesuit. But there it is. Such bad behavior is somewhat understandable when we remember that in the past year Georgetown University asked pardon for the harm its Jesuit founders did in 1838 when not only had the University owned slaves but sold some of them—perhaps even separating family members---in order to solve the school’s financial problems. An evil is fought when it is recognized as such. That is the first step.

Perhaps we are still shy of this first step. Yet, as we journey through this new year of 2018, may we individually and to-gether as a parish community open ourselves to the grace to take that necessary first step.

Estamos llegando al final del tiempo de Navidad con la celebración de Epifanía este fin de semana. Este ha sido un tiempo donde todos nos hemos concentrado en el amor mar-avilloso que está en el centro de nuestra fe Cristiana: Dios nos amó tanto que se convirtió en uno de nosotros en Jesús de Nazaret. Si nos imaginamos una hermosa pintura de una joven mirando a su bebé recién nacido, estamos en el centro de nuestra fe cristiana. La primera consecuencia de esta fe es darnos cuenta de que cada ser humano es sagrado, porque so-mos todos hermanos de ese Jesús bebé. Ciertamente, nuestra fe nos dice que esto es verdad, reconózcalo o no el ser hu-mano. Dios quiso que fuera así. Por lo tanto, la falla humana de no reconocer este hecho no deshace su realidad. Como escribió Hopkins: “—porque Cristo actúa en diez mil lugares, dentro de hermosos brazos y en adorables ojos que no son suyos, para el Padre, a través de las facciones de los rostros de los hombres.”

Al comenzar este nuevo año, necesitamos asumir más se-riamente esta“consecuencia”de nuestra fe cristiana. No nos hemos dado totalmente cuenta del alcance de la creencia en la Encarnación de Dios en Jesús. Los santos lo hicieron. Y es por eso que una mujer de Albania se hizo cargo de los mori-bundos de las calles en una ciudad en la India. Es por eso que un sacerdote belga cuidó a leprosos en Hawaii. Y es por eso que la Iglesia avala la aparición de la madre de Jesús como una mujer morena en Tepeyac, México. Sin embargo, los es-tudiantes de Boston College tuvieron que organizar protes-tas el otoño pasado para luchar contra consignas racistas que fueron garabateadas en el recinto universitario. Debiéramos pensar que esas cosas no deberían pasar en una universidad que se proclama católica y jesuita. Pero eso pasó. Este tipo de mala conducta es entendible cuando recordamos que el año pasado la Universidad de Georgetown pidió perdón por el daño que hicieron sus fundadores jesuitas en 1838, cuando no sólo la universidad tenía esclavos, sino que vendió a algunos – tal vez separándolos de sus familias—para resolver algunos de sus problemas financieros. Un mal se pelea cuando se le reconoce como tal. Ese es el primer paso.

Tal vez estemos todavía avergonzados de este primer paso.

Outreach Ministries

St. Ignatius Parish to sponsor a refugee family in the Boston area

Pope Francis has announced that Sunday, January 14th will be a day of awareness and action on behalf of mi-grants and refugees. His Holiness urges Catholics around the world to become involved in this ministry.

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston (CCAB) is leading the local effort and, along with parish-es across the Archdiocese, St. Ignatius Parish has agreed to partner with CCAB to sponsor a refugee family that will be moving to Boston in the next few months.

All members of the parish community are welcome to learn more about this partnership and how to get involved at an informational meeting on January 14th at 11:00 a.m. and at 6:30 p.m. in the media room.

New Year’s Resolution - Sing in the New Year!"Why did I ever stop singing? It was so much fun, there was such

a great spirit, I loved making beautiful music with others, I needed to express my faith through song, it was how I prayed, I had a great sense of accomplishment and fulfillment, it helped my breathing and general sense of well being, singing brought me closer to God."

Sound familiar? Maybe it’s time to re-engage and join one of our liturgical music groups. The 10 a.m. choir begins rehearsing again on Wednesday, January 17th at 7:15 p.m. The Latino Coro continues to practice before the Spanish mass, and the 5:30 p.m. ensemble continues on Sunday afternoons at 4:30 p.m. Our Children’s Choir will start up in a couple weeks.

Instrumentalists can join our St. Ignatius Symphonia. All of these groups are welcoming in new members, so contact Michael Burgo if you are interested in reigniting your music skills in the service of God and meeting new friends as well. Shattuck Fourth Tuesday: We’re back on our regular schedule! We’ll be serving supper at Pine Street Inn Shattuck Shelter on the fourth Tues-

day of January, that is January 23rd. Desserts are always needed, so if you can provide one, please bring it to the Parish Office by 4 p.m. on that Tuesday. Thank you!

February 10th/11th: Our at-the-door collection for St. Francis House Day Shelter to subsidize lunches. Will you be their valentine?

February 9th – Habitat Build. We’ll be sending a work crew to a Habitat site in Boston.

February 13th - Seniors’ Mardi Gras Observance. This will be our February lunch gathering. More details to come!

Month of March - Our annual socks and flip-flops drive for Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. Details will be in upcoming bulletins.

Men’s Spiritual GrowthThe purpose of the Men's Spiritual Growth meetings is to deepen our relationship with God and others in our everyday lives.
