TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 9, 2016

A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR1. Feast of St. Edward On Thursday, October

13th, we commemorate the feast of St. Edward the Confessor, our patron saint. The following is a prayer taken from a St. Edward prayer card. Most glorious St. Edward, you showed your devotion to God with patience, gentleness and generosity. Like you, may I serve to strengthen the kingdom of God through patient prayer and charity. Amen.

Also, a prayer for the youth of St. Edward Parish: O, Lord, we entrust to you our families, children and all the youth of our parish under the patronage of your servant St. Edward the Confessor. For your Word testifies, “Let the children come to me and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” (Luke 18:16).

Inspired by our patron Edward, who with fervent devotion retained his innocence, we ask his intercession for our children and the youth of our parish. May the great gift of your Spirit they have received in Baptism and Confirmation set their hearts afire and fill them anew with faith, hope and love. For this we pray:

“Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created and you shall renew the face of the earth.” St. Edward the Confessor, pray for us!

2. “All creatures of our God and King” did show up for the annual blessing of animals on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi – about 40 dogs, 3 cats and two horses! It was a happy occasion.

3. Thanks to all who sent cards for Pastor Appreciation Day. It was most kind, but all the thanks I need is knowing your support of the work of our parish. Is it Hallmark who thinks these occasions up?

4. Welcome back Fr. Jude! Our Ugandan priest friend will be here this weekend. However, I don’t know yet if he plans to take one of the weekend Masses. If you would like to help his parish (or Fr. Paul’s or Fr. Joseph’s), just make a check out to St. Edward with a notation “Uganda.”

WELCOME!You may have come as a stranger to us, yet you are known to Our Lord, Jesus Christ. In His name, we pray you will find peace, hospitality and friendship with us.

OFFERTORY COLLECTIONSThe Sunday offertory collection for October 2nd was $10,969.00. The Online Giving total for September was $21,607.00.

NOTES FROM THE LOFT CHILDREN’S CHOIR for first through Seventh Graders

will resume in November! The Choir will again sing half an hour of prelude music before the 5:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass. Rehearsals are on Sundays immediately after the 10:45 a.m. Mass (start about noon, end at 12:45 p.m.). In the past two years, our choir has grown in size, so this year’s rehearsal schedule is split as follows:

November 6 and 13: 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Graders only November 20 and 27: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Graders only December 4, 11 and 18: Everybody – 1st through 7th Graders As in the past, sign up forms are being distributed

through PSR. To sign up, you can complete that form or contact Paul directly at [email protected] or 740-587-3254.

ON COMMUNION MUSIC, PART II: The US Bishops’ music guidelines, Sing to the Lord (STTL), say that during Communion, “the singing of the people should be preeminent” (189). At St. Edward, we begin Communion with a piece from our hymnal that is sung by everybody. Chosen in accordance with STTL guidelines (191, 194), it is a hymn, psalm, or chant that includes that day’s prescribed Communion antiphon, describes Eucharistic themes and actions, or connects to the liturgical season/reading of the day. It usually has a refrain (STTL 192) to help facilitate singing while we process without books – or if the verses are tricky. We sing the piece in its entirety, but we do not repeat verses. Not repeating verses enables the cantor or choir to leave the loft and receive Communion while instrumental music is played.

Next week: Part III, instrumental music.~ Paul ([email protected] or 740-587-3254)

PARISH COUNCIL Our Parish Council serves in an advisory capacity to the pastor in the ordering of parish life and activities. The meetings are on the 4th Tuesday of the month, September through June. Each year, we draw names by lot at the weekend Eucharist (this year, October 23rd, at the 10:45 a.m. Mass), seeking the Holy Spirit’s assistance in the selection of new members. It is time to request that parishioners either nominate worthy candidates (after checking with them), or volunteer yourself to be a candidate by calling the Parish Office at 740-587-3254, emailing [email protected] or completing the coupon below and placing it in the collection basket or mailing it to the Parish Office. The deadline for names is Thursday, October 20th. The first meeting for new Parish Council members to attend will be October 27th.

The book for the next five meetings is Ordinary Lives Extraordinary Mission by John R. Wood. “The biggest crisis of our time is not economic, health care, or vocations, but it is an identity crisis. We have forgotten our mission to become saints and forgotten our story as Catholics. We must rediscover that mission and hold each other accountable to accepting responsibility for that mission. Your ordinary life has an extraordinary purpose.” The book and syllabus will be available at the meeting on Monday.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CENTER OCTOBER NEWS

NEW PARISHIONER WELCOME BRUNCHTogether with Monsignor Enke, the Welcome Committee would like to invite new families to our parish Welcome Brunch on Sunday, October 23rd, at 12:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Our previous brunch was last October, so even if you have been a parishioner for awhile and you don’t feel “new,” you are most welcome to attend. Invitations have been mailed but if you did not receive an invitation, please join us. RSVP to MaryAnn by calling 740-334-3026 or emailing [email protected] with your name, adult/child count and any food restrictions by Friday, October 14th.

A very special thank-you goes out to the parishioners of St. Francis de Sales for their generous donations of underwear for the Food Pantry families. St. Francis conducted an “Undies Sundays” campaign and collected over 2,600 pairs of underwear! The pantry

families were delighted with the chance to receive a pack of underwear for each of their family members. What seems like a small gesture of kindness is really a beautiful and appreciative gift for the families. During the month of September, the pantry served 211 families representing 610 people. Of the 211 families, 22 were new families to the pantry. The pantry is in need of canned fruit, Hamburger Helper type meals and jelly. The Food Pantry collection here at St. Edward is the weekend of October 23rd. Your donations are greatly appreciated. The St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store is undergoing some personnel changes. As with any change, there are always some challenges. One major challenge that has come up is the organization of the warehouse area. The good news is the donations are really rolling in. The bad news is the space to house the donations is being stressed. We need volunteers to help us regain control of the warehouse area. The plan is to begin the work on October 22 and to finish on October 29. We would work on Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., and on weekdays, from 12:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:30-9:00 p.m. The work would entail:

1. Removing old items from previous years’ donations (recycling, selling or donating these items to needy families).

2. Grouping all the donations into the various categories, i.e. clothing, home goods, etc.

3. Organizing the donations by category in the warehouse allowing plenty of room for movement and work areas.

We would greatly appreciate it if you could volunteer to work during one of the scheduled times. Children, middle school age and up, could assist with this work. The Thrift Store has donated thousands of dollars to both the Men’s Shelter and Food Pantry. The funds received from the Thrift Store are essential to the success of our programs. So please consider this request. If you, your family, classmates are willing to help with this task, please email Chuck Dilbone ([email protected]) with dates and times that you can volunteer. Thank you for your consideration for this request.

MERCY NOW ~ MERCY IS NEVER ORDINARY It is common for those who help us embrace the liturgical cycle of feasts and seasons to remind us that “ordinary time” is not “ordinary,” as in hohum, but rather “ordinal” or “counted” time – the majority of the weeks of the year are counted, one after another, helping us to break open God’s love for us in Jesus Christ and our call to discipleship. We might take this a step further and note that the many aspects of God’s love are not “ordinary” either – salvation, forgiveness, compassion, care, and mercy are extraordinary in the hands of God, and are to be in our sharing as well. Reaching out to another with love or attention in their loneliness; offering forgiveness when we have been hurt; giving compassion to those who suffer – none of these can be said to be “ordinary” when shared selflessly in Christ’s name. The Gospels show us that Jesus meets people in their ordinary circumstances, in their need for forgiveness, healing, teaching, companionship, ministry, love. The ordinary “stuff” of people’s lives is transformed by Christ, into moments of encounter, grace, and holiness. What ordinary circumstances in your life need to be changed by God’s mercy? How will you open your heart to this transformation today? – Leisa Anslinger © Catholic Life and Faith (www.CatholicLifeandFaith.net)

PRIESTHOOD SUNDAYPriesthood Sunday, October 30th, is a special day set aside to honor the priesthood in the U.S. It was established in 2003 to promote a way for Catholic communities to express appreciation for the priests who serve them, even when media attention is often negative. Such a celebration is relevant in light of the declining number of priests in the U.S. Only about 4,000 of the 19,000 parishes in this country currently have more than one priest. Many priests serve two or more parishes by themselves. The Knox/Licking Vocations Club thank our parish priests and the subs for their service and dedication. May they be blessed with good health and the zeal to preach the Gospel. Please be sure to personally thank them for all that they do for us!

everyone of what counts most in life: blessed Jesus Christ, His Holy Church, His

Monday, October 10 ~ Twenty-Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

Holy Gospel: Luke 11:29-32 While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, “This

generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. At the judgment the

queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than

Solomon here. At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it,

because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

Meditation: The Lord Jesus came to set us free from slavery to sin and hurtful desires. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit he pours his love into our hearts that we may understand his will for our lives and walk

in his way of holiness. God searches our hearts, not to condemn us, but to show us where we need his saving grace and help. He calls us to seek him with true repentance, humility, and the honesty to see our

sins for what they really are — a rejection of his love and will for our lives. God will transform us if we

listen to his word and allow his Holy Spirit to work in our lives. Ask the Lord to renew your mind and to increase your thirst for his wisdom. James says that the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable,

gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity (James 3:17). A double-minded person cannot receive this kind of wisdom. The single of heart desire one thing alone —

God's pleasure. God wants us to delight in him and to know the freedom of his truth and love. Do you thirst for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14)?

Prayer: May your grace, O Lord, we pray, at all times go before us and follow after and make us always determined to carry out good works. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with

you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: Do you pay attention to warning signs? Many fatalities could be avoided if people took

the warning signs seriously. When the religious leaders demanded a sign from Jesus, he gave them a warning to avert spiritual disaster. It was characteristic of the Jews that they demanded "signs" from

God's messengers to authenticate their claims. When the religious leaders pressed Jesus to give proof for his claims he says in so many words that he is God's sign and that they need no further evidence from

heaven than his own person. The Ninevites recognized God's warning when Jonah spoke to them, and they repented. Jonah was God's sign and his message was the message of God for the people of Nineveh.

Unfortunately the religious leaders were not content to accept the signs right before their eyes. They had

rejected the message of John the Baptist and now they reject Jesus as God's Anointed One (Messiah) and they fail to heed his message. Simeon had prophesied at Jesus' birth that he was "destined for the falling

and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that inner thoughts of many will be revealed" (Luke 2:34- 35). Jesus confirmed his message with many miracles in preparation for the

greatest sign of all — his resurrection on the third day.

Tuesday, October 11 ~ Twenty-Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

Saint John XXIII, Pope

Holy Gospel: Luke 11:37-41 After Jesus had spoken, a Pharisee invited him to dine at his home. He entered and reclined at table to eat. The Pharisee was amazed to see that he did not observe the

Page 9: Church of Saint Edward the Confessor...2016/10/09  · 1. Feast of St. Edward On Thursday, October 13th, we commemorate the feast of St. Edward the Confessor, our patron saint. The

prescribed washing before the meal. The Lord said to him, “Oh you Pharisees! Although you cleanse the

outside of the cup and the dish, inside you are filled with plunder and evil. You fools! Did not the maker of the outside also make the inside? But as to what is within, give alms, and behold, everything will be clean

for you.”

Meditation: Is the Lord welcomed at your table and are you ready to feast at his table? A Pharisee, after

hearing Jesus preach, invited him to dinner, no doubt, because he wanted to hear more from this extraordinary man who spoke the word of God as no one else had done before. It was not unusual for a

rabbi to give a teaching over dinner. Jesus, however, did something which offended his host. He did not perform the ceremonial washing of hands before beginning the meal. Did Jesus forget or was he

deliberately performing a sign to reveal something to his host? Jesus turned the table on his host by chiding him for uncleanness of heart.

Prayer: Almighty ever-living God, who chose Saint John XXIII to preside over your whole people and benefit them by word and example, keep safe, we pray, by his intercession, the shepherds of your Church

along with the people entrusted to their care and direct them into the way of eternal salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for

ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: Which is more important to God — clean hands, or a clean mind and a clean heart? Jesus chided the Pharisees for harboring evil thoughts that make us unclean spiritually — such as greed,

pride, bitterness, envy, arrogance, and the like. Why does he urge them, and us, to give alms? When we give freely and generously to those in need we express love, compassion, kindness, and mercy. And if the

heart is full of love and compassion, then there is no room for envy, greed, bitterness, and the like. Do you allow God's love to transform your heart and mind? If not, why not?

Wednesday, October 12 ~ Twenty-Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

Holy Gospel: Luke 11:42-46 The Lord said: “Woe to you Pharisees! You pay tithes of mint and of rue

and of every garden herb, but you pay no attention to judgment and to love for God. These you should have done, without overlooking the others. Woe to you Pharisees! You love the seat of honor in

synagogues and greetings in marketplaces. Woe to you! You are like unseen graves over which people unknowingly walk.” Then one of the scholars of the law said to him in reply, “Teacher, by saying this you

are insulting us too.” And he said, “Woe also to you scholars of the law! You impose on people burdens hard to carry, but you yourselves do not lift one finger to touch them.”

Meditation: Why does Jesus single out the teachers and lawyers for some rather strong words of rebuke? The word woe can also be translated as alas. It is as much an expression of sorrowful pity as it is of

anger. Why did Jesus lament and issue such a stern rebuke? Jesus was angry with the religious leaders because they failed to listen to God's word and they misled the people they were supposed to guide in the

ways of God. The scribes devoted their lives to the study of the Law of God and regarded themselves as legal experts in it. They divided the Ten Commandments and precepts into thousands of tiny rules and

regulations. They were so exacting in their interpretations and in trying to live them out, that they had

little time for anything else. By the time they finished compiling their interpretations it took no less than fifty volumes to contain them! In their misguided zeal, they required unnecessary and burdensome rules

which obscured the more important matters of religion, such as love of God and love of neighbor. They were leading people to “Pharisaism” rather than to God.

Prayer: May your grace, O Lord, we pray, at all times go before us and follow after and make us always determined to carry out good works. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with

you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: What was the point of Jesus' lesson in today’s Gospel? Simple! The essence of God's

commandments is love — love of the supreme good — God himself and love of our neighbor who is made in the image and likeness of God. God is love and everything he does flows from his love for us. God's

love is unconditional and is wholly directed towards the good of others. True love both embraces and lifts the burdens of others. Paul the Apostle reminds us that "God's love has been poured into our hearts

through the Holy Spirit which has been given us" (1 Cor. 5:5). Do you help your neighbors carry their burdens? God gives each of us sufficient grace for each day to love as he loves and to lift the burdens of

others that they, too, may experience the grace and love of Jesus Christ.

Thursday, October 13 ~ Twenty-Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

Holy Gospel: Luke 11:47-54 The Lord said: “Woe to you who build the memorials of the prophets whom your fathers killed. Consequently, you bear witness and give consent to the deeds of your ancestors, for

Page 10: Church of Saint Edward the Confessor...2016/10/09  · 1. Feast of St. Edward On Thursday, October 13th, we commemorate the feast of St. Edward the Confessor, our patron saint. The

they killed them and you do the building. Therefore, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets

and Apostles; some of them they will kill and persecute’ in order that this generation might be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world, from the blood of Abel to the

blood of Zechariah who died between the altar and the temple building. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged with their blood! Woe to you, scholars of the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge.

You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter.” When Jesus left, the scribes and Pharisees began to act with hostility toward him and to interrogate him about many things, for they were

plotting to catch him at something he might say.

Meditation: What does Jesus mean when he says they have taken away the key of knowledge? The

religious lawyers and scribes held the “office of the keys” since they were the official interpreters of the

scriptures. Unfortunately their interpretation of the scriptures became so distorted and difficult to understand that others were "shut off" to the scriptures. They not only shut themselves to heaven; they

also hindered others from understanding God's word. Through pride and envy, they rejected not only the prophets of old, but God's final prophet, the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is the "key of David" (see Isaiah

22:22; Revelations 3:7) who opens heaven to those who accept him as Lord and Savior. He is the "Wisdom of God" and source of everlasting life. Only the humble of heart – those who thirst for God and

acknowledge his word as true – can truly understand this wisdom.

Prayer: Father, your love for us surpasses all our hopes and desires. Forgive our failings, keep us in your

peace and lead us in the way of salvation. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives

and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: Do you revere God's word and submit to it as true and authoritative for your life? Or

does God’s word make for a good phrase on a t-shirt or coffee mug, and that’s about as far as it goes? God sent his prophets to open the ears of his people to hear and understand God's word and intention for

their lives. God's wisdom is personified in the voice of the prophets, a voice that usually brought rejection and martyrdom because they spoke for God rather than for human approval and favor. Jesus chastised

many of the religious leaders of his day for being double-minded and for demanding from others

standards which they refused to satisfy. They professed admiration for the prophets by building their tombs while at the same time they opposed their message and closed their ears to the word of God. Are

your ears open to God’s word – enough to transform your mind and heart?

Friday, October 14 ~ Twenty-Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

Saint Callistus I, Pope and Martyr

Holy Gospel: Luke 12:1-7 At that time: So many people were crowding together that they were trampling one another underfoot. Jesus began to speak, first to his disciples, “Beware of the leaven–that

is, the hypocrisy–of the Pharisees. “There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what

you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops. I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more. I shall show you whom to fear. Be

afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one. Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God.

Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many

sparrows.”

Meditation: You might be wondering why Jesus warned his disciples to avoid the ways of the Pharisees. The Pharisees wanted everyone to recognize that they were pious and good Jews because they

meticulously and scrupulously performed their religious duties. Jesus turned the table on them by

declaring that outward appearance doesn't always match the inward intentions of the heart. Anyone can display outward signs of goodness while inwardly harboring evil thoughts and intentions. The word

hypocrite means actor – someone who pretends to be what he or she is not. But who can truly be good, but God alone? Hypocrisy thrives on making a good appearance and masking what they don't want others

to see. The good news is that God's light exposes the darkness of evil and sin in our hearts, even the sin which is unknown to us. And God's light transforms our hearts and minds and enables us to overcome

hatred with love, pride with humility, and pretense with integrity and truthfulness. God gives grace to the humble and contrite of heart to enable us to overcome the leaven of insincerity and hypocrisy in our lives.

Prayer: O God, who raised up Pope Saint Callistus I to serve the Church and attend devoutly to Christ's faithful departed, strengthen us, we pray, by his witness to the faith, so that, rescued from the slavery of

corruption, we may merit an incorruptible inheritance. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Page 11: Church of Saint Edward the Confessor...2016/10/09  · 1. Feast of St. Edward On Thursday, October 13th, we commemorate the feast of St. Edward the Confessor, our patron saint. The

Contemplation: What does “fear” have to do with the kingdom of God? Fear is a powerful force. It can lead us to panic and flight or it can spur us to faith and action. The fear of God is the antidote to the fear

of losing one's life. "I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears...O fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no want! ...Come, O sons, listen to me, I will teach

you the fear of the Lord." (Psalm 34:4,9,11) What is fear of God? It is reverence for the One who made us

in love and who sustains us in mercy and kindness. The greatest injury or loss which we can experience is not physical but spiritual – the loss of one's soul to the power of hell. A healthy fear of God leads to

spiritual maturity, wisdom and right judgment and it frees us from the tyranny of sinful pride, deceit and cowardice – especially in the face of evil and spiritual deception. Do you trust in God's grace and mercy

and do you submit to his word?

Saturday, October 15 ~ Twenty-Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

Saint Teresa of Jesus (Saint Teresa of Avila), Virgin and Doctor of the Church

Holy Gospel: Luke 12:8-12 Jesus said to his disciples: “I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me

before others the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God. But whoever denies me before

others will be denied before the angels of God. “Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. When they take you

before synagogues and before rulers and authorities, do not worry about how or what your defense will be or about what you are to say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you should say.”

Meditation: Jesus warns that it is possible to reject the grace of God and to fall into “apostasy” (giving up the faith) out of cowardice or disbelief. The scriptural expression to “deny someone” means to “disown”

them. Have you ever denied some aspect of your faith in order to “fit in” with the crowd, or simply to get

along? Jesus also speaks against “blaspheming” the Holy Spirit. What is blasphemy and why is it reprehensible? Basically, blasphemy consists in some form of utterance against God, inwardly or

outwardly, words of hatred, reproach, or defiance. Why is this wrong? Because it is contrary to the respect we owe to God as our Father and Creator and who has unbounded love for us, and it is wrong to speak

against God’s holy name. Jesus speaks of blaspheming against the Holy Spirit as the unforgivable sin. Jesus spoke about this sin immediately after the scribes and Pharisees had attributed his miracles to the

work of the devil instead of to God.

Prayer: O God, who through your Spirit raised up Saint Teresa of Jesus to show the Church the way to

seek perfection, grant that we may always be nourished by the food of her heavenly teaching and fired

with longing for true holiness. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: Folks, a sin can only be unforgivable if we do not repent of our sins, or have a truly contrite heart for the sins we have committed. If someone repeatedly closes his or her heart to God and

shuts one’s ears to God’s voice, the person may come to a point where he or she can no longer recognize God even when God makes himself known. Such a person can end up perceiving evil as good and good as

evil (Isaiah 5:20). To fear such a sin, however, signals that one is not dead to God and is conscious of the need for God's grace and mercy. Always remember: there are no limits to the mercy and love of God. But

anyone who refuses to accept God's mercy by first recognizing that what one did was wrong and sinful,

then repenting of wrongdoing, rejects the forgiveness of their sins and the salvation offered. God gives grace and help to all who humbly call upon him. Giving up on God and refusing to turn away from sin and

disbelief results from pride and the loss of hope in God. Let’s all be honest with ourselves and realize that our actions have consequences, and that a sin is still a sin no matter how we might justify our actions.

Once we have done this, then we understand what it means to have a contrite heart and to say “I’m sorry” to God through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

In your personal copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, we continue reading through the 5th Commandment: “Thou Shall not Kill.” We read paragraphs 2268 and 2269 entitled, “Intentional Homicide.” 2268 – The fifth commandment forbids direct and intentional killing as gravely sinful. The murderer and those who cooperate voluntarily in murder commit a sin that cries out to heaven for vengeance. Gen. 4:10. 2269 – The fifth commandment forbids doing anything with the intention of indirectly bringing about a person’s death. The acceptance by human society of murderous famines, without efforts to remedy them, is a scandalous injustice and grave offense. Unintentionally killing is not morally imputable.
