Jesus asks us to commit ourselves to be good stewards of the gifts entrusted to us, to share our time, our talent, and our treasure as an outward sign of the love and gratitude we have for him. — Grateful Caretakers of God’s Many Gifts by Joseph M. Champlin

From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Friends in our Lord: This month’s Columbia magazine from the Knights of Columbus is worth reading. The majority of the stories are about the work the Knights are doing in the Middle East. They are “A Lifeline for Persecuted

Christians. For four years running, the Knights of Columbus has championed the cause of suffering Christians in the Middle East.” In particular the work they are doing is helping Christians return to their land near Nineveh and Erbil. These are the most ravaged areas caused by Isis in Iraq and Kurdistan. The Knights have been building houses and apartment complexes to aid those shattered by this tragic episode. These people are returning to the land of modern-day Martyrs. Thank you, Knights of Columbus! This week, we have seen the first steps in preparing our Vesting Sacristy for in-floor heating, insulation, walls, and plumbing. It is my understanding that this construction will be completed when we begin work on the church, which is slated to begin the first of January. Perhaps you haven’t noticed that Steve Heymans planted 34 large white pines on the western side of the south cemetery. This will help create a barrier from the CSB buses. I hope that in the near future we will be able to plant more trees in order to create a park-like ambiance for your beloved deceased relatives and friends. Finally, for your complete information about Buster’s day care providers during October, I thank Connie and Gerald Horsch and the Loso family for the later half of the month. I asked Buster what he thought of the arrangements and he signed off on it provided that I bring him something when I return. Thank you, Fr. Nick and Fr. Eberhard, for your faithful priestly support for this great parish of Saint Joseph. (I tell the bishop almost every time I see him that this is the best parish in his diocese. He has not disputed that, but a few of the other priests snicker.)

Fr. Jerome Tupa, OSB, Pastor

Bishop’s Annual Appeal

In August, $212,450 was distributed to 131 parishes throughout the diocese: • Catholic Schools: Parishes supporting students in Catholic schools receive a gift based on $55 per enrolled Catholic school students, grades 1 – 8. • Religious Education: Parishes that do not have a Catholic school receive a gift based on $5 per student in religious education, grades K – 12. • Catholic High Schools: Cathedral High School and Saint John’s Prep receive a distribution for some of the students enrolled. To donate: visit www.stcdio.org/appeal or mail “Bishop’s Annual Appeal,” PO Box 1538, St. Cloud, MN 56302.

Gospel Reflection

In today’s Gospel, Jesus once again talks to his disciples about his coming death and resurrection, but they did not understand. Instead, they get involved in a discussion about who among them is the

greatest. However, when Jesus asks what they were arguing about, they are embarrassed and remain silent. Then Jesus sat down with them to teach them. “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be last of all and the servant of all!” And he goes on to tell them they must accept everyone—even a little child. This is a challenge to us to accept and serve the most vulnerable in society. Who are the most vulnerable in our lives? We are called to be servants of the poor, the lonely, and all those who need things done for them. How can we be servants this week? We could make a visit to a friend or relative or someone at a care center. We could spend time with children or help a neighbor who may be very poor or who may have lost a loved one. This week, concentrate your service on finding the presence of Jesus in those around you. Sr. Betty Larson, Pastoral Ministry

Large Suitcases and Duffle Bags Needed If you have large suitcases or duffle bags that you no longer use, please consider donating them as a means of transporting dresses that parishioners are currently making for children in Haiti.
