A WORD FROM FR. IVAN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The fourth constitution of the Second Ecumenical Vatican Council is called Gadium et Spes.
Unlike the other three dogmatic constitutions, this is a pastoral constitution: therefore it is not
doctrinal, but deals with the application of doctrine to the personal, family and social life of
the Christian, It is the first official Church document to be addressed to all men of good will.
This constitution was also very worked and elaborated given that there were different ways of conceiving Christian
life during the Council (e.g. transcendent or incarnational). The first part of the constitution was completely
reworked from a standpoint more in conformity with Christian tradition, and this was in part the work of the then
Cardinal Karol Wojtyla.
“In this document the bishops of the whole world, united around the Successor of Peter, were eager to show the
solidarity of the Church’s love for the men and women of this age, marked by two recent wars and facing a profound
crisis of spiritual values and moral precepts that had been eradicated from their traditions.
Limiting themselves to a historical and sociological consideration, the Council Fathers afforded themselves to ask in
a theological way, the fundamental questions that have always assailed the heart of man: “what is man? What is this
sense of sorrow, of evil, of death, which continues to exist despite so much progress?” (GS 10). Channeling in this
way the “mystery of man” in the light of the Word of God, they also strongly penetrate the Christian community to
offer a specific contribution towards “rendering more human” the entire human family (GS 40).
In every time and place these questions are in the heart of man and they thrust him to look for the full and definitive
answer. Gaudium et Spes strongly underlines that this answer can only be found in Jesus Christ, who is “ the key, the
center and the goal of all of human history” (GS 10).
Pope John Paul II in the 30th anniversary of Gadium et Spes said, “I myself, placing myself in the trail of Gaudium
et Spes, in these years I have retained my obligation to illustrate on different occasions how, despite the despicable
conflicts of the past, science and faith have not any real motive for antagonism, but bring more and more often a
reciprocal advantage to the meeting and mutual collaboration” (see GS 36).
God bless! Wishing you a blessed Sunday.

Parish Outreach News This week we started a partnership with Ramsey
County Human Services. 2 financial assistance
workers came to the parish office on Tuesday from

county and MNSure paperwork. These workers
were able to assist 27 families. Our staff provided
the interpretation needed. It was a huge success!
This service will be provided weekly on Mondays
from 9 am—noon in the parish office.
Looking for Church Cleaning Help
Please come on Saturday, December 2 to help clean the church as the Ad-vent and Christmas seasons are around the corner. Start your day with morning Mass and then stay and help with the cleaning. Many hands make for light work! Hope to see you there!
Fr. Joseph will be gone for a month. He left
November 2 and will be back December 4.
He went to Myanmar to visit family and will al-
so get a chance to meet with his bishop. Pope
Francis will be in Myanmar from Nov. 27-30 so
Fr. Joseph will also get to be in on the celebra-
tions for that visit.
