From the Desk of Father Jonathan

You have heard me joke that Palm Sunday is my favorite day of the year because I get to ride the don-key in procession around the Church. I'm only partly joking. I love this day because of what it means for our faith. When Jesus entered Jerusalem and mount-ed a donkey, the drama of his passion was at hand. Jesus knew exactly who he was and why he was going into Jerusalem, even if the people with palms in their hands had other ideas of what he would do for them.

Jesus had entered Jerusalem many times before, but this time his entrance was very different. He was going to lay his life down for each of us. He was go-ing to be crucified at the hands of the Romans and the Jewish leaders who feared him.

When Jesus mounted the donkey, he was fulfilling a prophecy that the Messiah would come mounted a humble animal, instead of an animal made for war. From Zachariah 9:9: "Our king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."

When we process together around the church, the priest sits on a similar donkey and leads the commu-nity in a commemoration of that day when Our Lord and Savior showed us that his kingdom is not of this world. Sitting on that donkey and receiving the praise of the people, Jesus truly was a king, but not of geographical, political territories, as they wished, but rather of their hearts. Jesus entered Jerusalem to free all of those people, and all of us, from the conse-quences of our sin. Jesus has come to show us in unforgettable images what true freedom and power look like.

We hold our palms high and also lay them at his feet. And in our hearts, we say to him, "Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Jews, and King of my heart, enter into my life and make me everything you want me to be."

God bless you and your families as we begin this Holy Week.

Father Jonathan + REST IN PEACE +

Please pray for Victor Perez and all the faithful departed

PASSION

The contrast between the processional reading in today’s liturgy and the proclamation of the Passion is striking. We are given a glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled in Jesus. First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One who is to come. He must be acknowledged by all, though they do not know what they are saying. They think he is the promised king, a worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the Roman occupation. They do not yet understand, even the disciples, exactly where this triumphal procession is leading. In our lives, we too do not know where we are going. It is in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead us, trusting that death is not the end, nor evil the victor.

© lachiesa.it

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For many centuries, Christian pilgrims have longed to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, and on Passion Sunday the eyes of the world are on the Via Dolorosa, the “Road of Sorrows,” in Jerusalem. As soon as it became safe for Christians to worship in public in the fourth century, a way was marked out. It was changed a few times over the years, and today’s usual route was sketched by the Franciscans six hundred years ago, alt-hough Anglicans and Byzantines have their own unique detours. Friday is the most favored day, although it is crowded then. Almost everyone begins at the Lion’s Gate in the Muslim Quarter, and ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It’s less than a quarter mile, but it threads its way through crowded markets with souvenir shops and fast-food snacks. There are, just as in your parish church, fourteen stations along the way. The ex-act spots are not known, but what matters is the pil-grim’s unique ability to see even an ordinary road in a teeming city as something more than meets the eye.
