Earlier this week, I met with one of our parishioners and asked him for a significant donation for the interior restoration of our church, which, as you know will begin in the coming weeks. He was very kind and told me, with significant sadness in his voice, that he would love to help but that he was on a fixed income. I told him not to worry in the least….that God will provide. “All of us”, I continued, “will do what we can—and nothing more—and God will take care of the rest.” The next day I received a “thank you” note, with a beautiful expression from this parishioner of how grateful he is to God for our church and for the time I spent with him. He included in the envelope a check made out to the church, with a promise that, beginning on March 1, he will send at least this amount every month for the rest of his life. I was floored! What goodness! What generosity! What love! There are different ways to show God our love, and certainly money is only one, small aspect. What God most wants from us is our heart. He asks us in this Len-ten season for a contrite heart, a repentant heart, a heart that he can fashion, according to his own.

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD

THIRSTING FOR LIFE-GIVING WATERS Sunday’s Gospel: (Jn 4, 5-42) Especially during the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter seasons, the prayer texts of the Eastern Church revel in paradoxical images of Christ: the eternal life who is put to death, the host of the supper who is also its meal, the thirsty crucified one with living water streaming from his side. These images flow from the evangelists’ portrayals of Jesus and from his very ministry, during which he often upset or reversed people’s expectations about him or the ways of God. This “reversal” is at play in today’s Gospel, as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a woman beneath his status. In addition he, the thirsting one, shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. He—whose parched lips will say “I thirst” before he dies—is the source of life and life-giving water. Lent calls upon us to dwell on how each of us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads us, ultimately, back to the life-giving waters of our baptism into his Body. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

RIFLESSIONE SULLA PAROLA DI DIOVangelo della Domenica: (Gv 4, 5-42) La conversazione di Gesù con la Samaritana si svolge sul tema dell’“acqua viva”. Quest’acqua è indispensabile alla vita, e non è sorprendente che, nelle regioni del Medio Oriente dove regna la siccità, essa sia semplicemente il simbolo della vita e, anche, della salvezza dell’uomo in un senso più generale. Questa vita, questa salvezza, si possono ricevere solo aprendosi per accogliere il dono di Dio. È questa la convinzione dell’antico Israele come della giovane comunità cristiana. E l’autore dei Salmi parla così al suo Dio: “È in te la sorgente della vita” (Sal 036,10). Ecco la sua professione di fede: “Come la cerva anela ai corsi d’acqua, così l’anima mia anela a te, o Dio” (Sal 042,2). La salvezza che Dio porta viene espressa con l’immagine della sorgente che zampilla sotto l’entrata del tempio e diventa un grande fiume che trasforma in giardino il deserto della Giudea e fa del mar Morto un mare pieno di vita (Ez 47,1-12). Gesù vuole offrire a noi uomini questa salvezza e questa vita. REFLEXIONEMOS LA PALABRA DE DIOS SEDIENTOS DE LAS AGUAS QUE DAN VIDA

Evangelio del Domingo: (Jn 4, 5-42) Especialmente durante la Cuaresma, la Semana Santa y el tiempo de Pascua, los textos de oración de la Iglesia Occidental se deleitan con imágenes paradójicas de Cristo: la vida eterna que muere, el anfitrión de la cena que es también alimento, el crucificado sediento del que mana agua de vida de su costado. Estas imágenes fluyen de las representaciones de Jesús por parte de los evangelistas y de su mismísimo ministerio, durante el cual muchas veces cambió o invirtió las expectativas que las personas tenían sobre él o sobre los designios de Dios. Esta “inversión” está en juego en el Evangelio de hoy, cuando Jesús habla con una extranjera enemiga que está por debajo de su condición social. Además él, el que tiene sed, demuestra que la mujer es la única que tiene sed verdadera. Él –cuyos labios secos dirán “Tengo sed” antes de morir– es la fuente de vida y del agua que da vida. La Cuaresma nos llama a reflexionar sobre cómo cada uno de nosotros tiene sed de Cristo y nos lleva, en última instancia, de vuelta a las aguas dadoras de vida de nuestro bautismo en su Cuerpo.
