IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY JUNE 30, 2019
From the Pastor’s Desk
It is great to come across an article that highlights a real turn-around experience for someone who had a rotten future in store for him to someone who looks to the future with gratitude and hope. I am talking about an article from a number of years ago (December 24, 2010) by Gabrielle Donnelly in the Catholic Herald (UK) where she interviews Hollywood superstar Mark Wahlberg about his family, his faith, and his being sent to jail as a teenager. Wahlberg has a fascinating story to tell. This is what he says about his Catholic faith: “Being a Catholic is the most important aspect of my life. The first thing I do when I start my day is, I get down on my hands and knees and give thanks to God. Whenever I go outside of my house, the first thing I do is stop at the church. The kids will be mad with me. ‘Daddy! It takes too long!’ I’m saying: ‘It’s only 10 minutes and this is something I really need to do.’ Because I do. If I can start my day out by saying my prayers and getting myself focused, then I know I’m doing the right thing. That 10 minutes helps me in every way throughout the day.” Wahlberg’s life was once heading in the wrong direction. As a young boy, he was getting involved with crime and all sorts of delinquency, not to mention addiction to drugs. At age 16, he was high on acid as he robbed a pharmacy, knocked a man unconscious, left another blind in one eye, and attacked a security guard. He was charged with attempted murder and sentenced to jail. This is what Wahlberg says as he thinks about those days: “There’s nothing scarier than being 16 years old, hearing the jail house door close behind you, and knowing that you’re not going to leave. I’d brought it on myself. A lot of bad things happened to me when I was young, and I did a lot of bad things too. I was too cool for school, I’d made my mistakes and I was paying for them. I’d lost sight of my religion. My parents were Catholic but not devoutly so, and once I’d started venturing out on to the street that wasn’t important to me at all. But, of course, once you get into trouble, you start praying! ‘Oh, my God, just get me out of here, and I swear I’ll never do it again!’ Well, I did get out of jail, and I did make sure I never went back there. The recidivism rate for people going back for jail sentences is through the roof, but not me. I did not want to be another statistic. I wanted to live my life instead.” One of the first things Wahlberg did was to go to his parish priest, Fr. Flavin of Boston. With his help, Walhbeg left his street gang, cleaned up his act and devoted his attention to putting his spir-itual house in order. And for the first time, he says, his life started to make sense. “Once I focused on my faith wonderful things started happening for me,” he says now. “And I don’t mean professionally – that’s not what it’s about. These days, I’ll be in church and people will come
up to me and say: ‘Do you mind if I sit and pray with you?’ And they’ll start praying and it’ll turn out they’re praying for their new movie to be a success or whatever, and I’m like, this is not what I come here for. For me to sit down and ask for material things is ridiculous. It’s a much bigger picture than that. I want to serve God and to be a good human being and to make up for the mistakes I made and the pain I put people through. That’s what I’m praying for, and I recommend it to anybody.”
When asked about his great success these days in Hollywood, he had a great answer: “But that’s not what it’s about,” he insists. “Being a good actor or a good producer: that’s not going to help me sleep at night or get me into heaven. The most important thing from where I sit is to be a good fa-ther, a good husband, and a good human being – a man who helps his fellow man and raises his kids to be good human beings too.” Nice Mark, nice!

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
A PRAYER FOR AMERICA
Father, we beg Your blessing for the unborn, the weak, the sick and the old; all who are finding themselves be-ing targets of the vicious culture of death; that our Lord Jesus bless & protect all who stand for the Christian dig-nity of persons. That God enlighten those who are trav-
eling down death’s highway by their involvement, in any way, with either the contemporary death culture, selfism, relativism, or any of the new age errors of our
times, that God envelop our culture with His Divine pro-tection & help us both individually & as a nation to true enlightenment, conversion & repentance of ourselves &
our culture. Help us to turn from our national sin of abortion, & return to, & once again become a Christian
nation, on the narrow road, that is, the path to becoming a nation and culture, under God. Amen….
Show Jesus that you care by signing up for a weekly Ho-ly Hour! Adoration: Monday’s 7:15am - Friday’s 7pm.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the Fourth of July Holiday, Adoration will be Sus-pended on Wednesday, July 3rd at 7pm & will resume on Monday, July 8th at 7:15am
First Saturday – July/August, 2019 Because so many people are away on weekends in the summer, the Blessed Sacrament will not be enthroned on First Saturday in July & August. Pray the rosary pri-vately.

Immaculate Heart of Mary School News June 30, 2019
Dear Parishioners: It is with great enthusiasm that I ask you to join me in welcoming Mrs. Tracy Keelin as the new Principal of Immaculate Heart of Mary School. Mrs. Keelin brings more than ten years of experience as an educator and school leader to Immaculate Heart of Mary School. As a graduate of both Catholic ele-mentary & Catholic high school, Mrs. Keelin has chosen to dedicate her career to Catholic education because she believes in the importance of a Catholic faith-based education. With 14 years of service in education as a teacher and leader, Mrs. Keelin brings extensive experience as an educator to Immaculate Heart of Mary School. Mrs. Keelin is currently the Assistant Principal at St. Catherine Academy in the Bronx and she taught English at Monsignor Scanlon High School for seven years. She holds a Bachelors of Arts in English and a Masters of Science in Education, both from Mercy College. Mrs. Keelin holds New York State Professional Certification in School Building Leadership. Under her leadership at Saint Catherine Academy, Mrs. Keelin led several enhancement initiatives to increase the quality, rigor and exposure of the programs at the school. In addition to the supervision of the English, History and Foreign Language Departments, Mrs. Keelin works with the teachers to support curriculum mapping, the development and implementation of student learning objectives and the use of classroom technology. In addition to the work Mrs. Keelin does to support teaching and learning, she has also been instrumental in the development of technology integration at St. Catherine Academy. Un-der her leadership, the school implemented a one-to-one iPad program and the use of Google Classroom throughout all classes. Mrs. Keelin is directly responsible for the school's website and social media pres-ence. Mrs. Keelin will replace Ms. Rose Ragone, who has faithfully served as the interim principal since March. We are grateful to Ms. Ragone for her work at IHM and we wish her success in her future endeavors. Mrs. Keelin begins her role of principal on August 1, 2019. Given Mrs. Keelin's wealth of knowledge and experience, she brings a true understanding of Catholic education to this new role. We welcome Mrs. Keelin to Immaculate Heart of Mary and look forward to supporting her as she leads our won-derful school community.
Sincerely, Reverend Thomas A. Lynch Pastor
