IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY FEBRUARY 17, 2019
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK I just finished reading Jordan Peterson’s book, 12 Rules For Life, An Antidote To Chaos. It was one of those books that seemed to jump out of the shelf in Barnes and Noble. I heard about Dr. Peterson from a few friends and I watched a few discussions led by him. He is a YouTube sensation. Always calm, cool and collected, he often faces angry, accu-satory and frustrated competitors. In this book, he offers his perspec-tive on the most helpful ways to live in a chaotic world. Many of his in-sights are things we learned when were children, that is, if we paid at-tention to our parents and grandparents! However, they are worth re-peating. Here is a quick summary of those “Rules for life.”
1. Stand up straight with your shoulders back - (This is a fascinating chapter as Peterson describes the life of lobsters and animals in their world and how we can learn so much from them. Basically he is telling us to live and to live boldly!)
2. Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping - (Great advice, we often look after our pets more than we do ourselves!)
3. Make friends with people who want the best for you - (Have you ever thought of some of the friends you have who often go out of their way to put you down or who do not want what is best for you. It really begs the question, why are they our friends?)
4. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday not to who someone else is today - (This is a really great insight. Comparing ourselves to others leads us down a sad road.)
5. Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them - (Parents will ap-preciate this chapter. More than anything Peterson is simply suggesting that parents be parents and not their children’s cruise director! He doesn’t use that line, but I think it summarizes his main message.)
6. Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world - (Of course nothing is ever perfect but Peterson is opening up the command of Jesus himself when he says: “First remove the beam out of your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother's eye.”)
7. Pursue what is meaningful, not what is expedient - (Great chapter on not being afraid of sacrifices or suffering in life. Trying to avoid these realities invites unwanted realities that are far worse.)
8. Tell the truth--- or at least don’t lie - (Obvious, no?) 9. Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don’t - (How
many of us in conversation can’t wait for the other person to stop talking so that we can add a better opinion or perspective? This little dictum offers us a way to listen whole-heartedly.)
10. Be precise in your speech - (Also very obvious, no?) 11. Do not bother children when they are skateboarding - (Here Peterson offers more par-
enting advice especially for those who are super protective to the point of stunting growth in their children. A tough chapter indeed, one might disagree with a few insights Peterson offers. However, it is worthy of a good evaluation for parents.)
12. Pet a cat when you encounter one in the street - (Very strange title for his last chapter. Here Peterson speaks about the welcoming, refreshing disposition we ought to have for the fun, random and perhaps irrational things in life.)

IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY FEBRUARY 17, 2019
HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly February 17, 2019
“Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is in the Lord. He is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream: It fears not the heat when it comes, its leaves stay green; in the year of drought it shows no distress, but still bears fruit…. ‘And raising his eyes toward his disciples he said…’”
We are so familiar with the Sermon on the Mount, and the beatitudes of St. Matthew. They summarize the entire message of Jesus and provide the pattern for a healthy examination of conscience.
Today we meet St. Luke’s teaching, the Sermon on the Plain, addressed to the disciples and to us. Instead of eight positive directives, we are given four, and then four warnings to help us move from the now to the promised reward. How helpful for us to fix our eyes on what the Lord has in store for us, to make us less com-placent, eager to ‘rejoice and leap for joy on that day!’
We know well the obstacles, barriers and chal-lenges of the Christian life. St. Ignatius asks us to discern both the positive and negative to help us make good decisions.
HOPE Community Services, Inc. New Rochelle, NY Dear Immaculate Heart of Mary Parishioners:
We are writing this letter to ex-press our deepest thanks for your recent contribution to HOPE for hats, scarves, gloves, sweatshirts and toys.
The donation is very important to us. It enables us to continue in our mission to bring HOPE to the table and lives of our neighbors in need.
HOPE is still the largest provider of emergency food services in Westchester County. We also pro-vide outreach support such as citizenship classes, crisis intervention, and social services. As we con-tinue and expand our services to the community, we are acutely aware that we cannot do so without your support.
Once again, on behalf of all of us, clients, staff and board of directors, thank you.
Sincerely, Carole Troum Executive Director
