It is, perhaps the favorite season of children and adults alike. Children have a break from school and many parents take a week away from work. Not only that, there are numerous outdoor activities such as ballgames, picnics, fishing, camping, hiking, etc. Summertime is great; however, amidst all the fun we must be careful to guard and maintain our godly influence. Even though the living may be a little more relaxed in the summer, our Christianity cannot be. Satan has many fiery darts that he uses in the summer (Ephesians 6:16). Our job is to stand prepared with our armor on and sword ready, before the battle begins (Ephesians 6:13). DONT SLACK ON VACATION. Vacations are a great time to get away from the normal routine and have a good rest. However, keep in mind that we can’t get away from God (Hebrews 4:13). Our charge to put God first and think on higher things remains even on vacation (Colossians 3:2). That means, first and foremost, we must find a faithful congregation with which to worship before leaving on vacation so as not to neglect the assembling of the saints (Hebrews 10:25). In order to keep this command, it is usually best not to travel on a Sunday. However, if it is unavoidable, careful attention must be given to when and where the family will stop to worship God during their travels. Another very important factor is the activities in which we engage while on vacation. Unfortunately, it is not unusual to hear of some Christians going to “sin city” to play the slots on vacation, drinking alcohol, or even going to a dance club. These things are done with the mentality that “no one is around to see.” We must be Christians all the time or none of the time (Luke 9:23). Our lights cannot shine while doing these things, nor can we be pure (Matthew 5:16; 2 Timothy 2:22). DONT SLACK AT PARTIES. Summertime parties can be a lot of fun, especially around a holiday. Many have 4 th of July parties that involve fireworks, grilling, and sometimes even beer or some other alcoholic beverage. Christians must abstain from all appearances of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22). Alcohol certainly is a known evil! Using alcohol for recreation will certainly condemn the soul (1 Corinthians 6:9-11). God tells of the effects of it and how it destroys so many lives (Proverbs 23:29-35): there is sorrow and grief (people will hurt others, lie, and deprive their families for it), contentions (divorces, arguments, and violence/murder), mutilation and destruction (more than 500 people die in alcohol related accidents every week), mental anguish (crying/hangovers), immorality (eyes look on women of loose morals), instability (can’t think straight), and insensibility (can’t remember what happened). As Christians, we wear the name of our Savior with us wherever we go. He is the one that we are to follow in all things. Even while He was Derrick Coble

suffering and dying on the cross, Jesus would not take the wine mingled with gall that was offered to Him (Matthew 27:34). Should we drink such for recreation?

DON’T SLACK AT THE WATER. It is so hot in the summertime that most people enjoy a good refreshing splash of water to cool off. However, this too can become dangerous due to immodesty. Modern swimsuits uncover more than they cover. Thus, it can be very difficult to maintain godliness at the water. Our bodies should not be exposed anywhere at anytime! God wanted Adam and Eve to cover up their nakedness (Genesis 3:7-10). God wanted the sons of Aaron to cover up their nakedness (Exodus 28:40-43). God wants us to cover up our nakedness in modest apparel (1 Timothy 2:9). Furthermore, we cannot allow ourselves to be in a position to fulfill lustful desires amidst others who are not covered up (Matthew 5:28). In all we do this summer and every day, the question is, “Would I be engaged in this activity with Jesus?” Don’t slack this summer!

“For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles-- when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you. They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead” (1 Peter 4:3-5 NKJV).

NO TIME TO PRAY

I got up early one morning

and rushed right into the day. I had so much to accomplish

that I didn’t have time to pray. Problems just tumbled upon me

and heavier came each task. “Why doesn’t God help me?” I wondered.

He answered, “You didn’t ask.” But the day toiled on,

grey and bleak. I wondered why God didn’t show me,

He said, “But you didn’t seek.” I tried to come into God’s presence;

I used all my keys at the lock. God gently and lovingly said,

“My child, you didn’t knock.” I woke up early this morning

and paused before entering the day. I had so much to accomplish

that I had to take time to pray. http://housetohouse.com/glad-tidings-good-things-july-1-2017/
