My thanks to John Matthews for contributing our September Preface.

Preface Dear Friends,

September already! For farmers there is the remainder of the harvest  to  bring  in‐  for  the  educational world  its  La  Rentrée,

when for teachers and pupils another school year begins ‐ and for all of us in All Saints Vendée its time to take stock. We have enjoyed the long, warm and dry days of summer and now our thoughts turn to winter fuel and Christmas. A time of preparation but also a  time  for  reflection.  In  the  past  few  months  some  of  us  will  have  had  chance  to recharge our batteries by  taking a break  from our usual  routines  ‐  visiting new areas, enjoying  new  experiences,  visits  from  family  or  friends  or  celebrating  family anniversaries.

Page 2: Church of All Saints in the Vendée · Vendée its time to take stock. We have enjoyed the long, warm and dry days of summer and now our thoughts turn to winter fuel and Christmas.

However, for others, schedules will have been determined by medical demands due to illness ‐ hospital appointments, daily visits from nurses, remembering when to take the next pill, or administer it  if we are caring for someone who is ill.   Some of us will have been mourning the loss of a loved one and will be beginning to try to rebuild our lives.

Have we been conscious of God’s presence with us during  the  summer? Whether we have been enjoying ourselves, or wondering how we were going to cope with the next few days, have we shared our feelings with him? Thanked him or sought his advice or support?.

We will all have had different experiences during the summer, but we are all children of God and members of one church, whichever worship centre we regard as our ’base’. As we  prepare  for  the months  ahead,  perhaps  it’s  a  good  time  to  give  some  thought  to where we might be able use our own gifts, experience, skills and energies to help each other.

Do we know someone who needs help? Do we ourselves need assistance with anything? Many of us find  it easier to give help than to accept an offer of help. Our faith should lead to good works as we thank god for his grace, mercy and goodness, and this should include both giving and receiving (allowing others to ’give’ by helping us).

The church as an organisation also needs helpers. Do not ‘hide your light’ but wherever  your  interest  lies,  consider  what  you  could  offer  (welcoming,  catering,  organising, reading in church etc, etc) and talk to a church council member about it.

As we prepare ourselves  for  the months  ahead,  let us  remember how much God has freely given us and freely give of ourselves

Brother, sister let me serve you. Let me be as Christ to you.

Pray that I may have the grace To let me be your servant too.

Blessings,

John

Notes from your Churchwardens

It is now almost a year since Caroline left our Chaplaincy, we have however been able to maintain regular Communion services  (with a  few exceptions) due  to  the  grace  of  our  ‘locums’,  Tim  Bravington,  Hazel  Door  and Martyn Crompton.  Martyn returns to us  in October and Hazel will be with us from November  through  to Christmas.  What we need  to  remember  is,  that  this has only been possible because none of the ‘locums’ have claimed the £150 per week, which according to diocesan rules they are entitled too.  Had they

done so the financial viability of All Saints Vendée would have been called into question. We are also fortunate that we do not have to worry about the fabric of the churches in which we worship, unlike our Christian colleagues in the UK.

We are all  stewards of Christ’s Church here on earth and  in particular we are  stewards of All  Saints Vendée.  It is up to us to ensure that our Chaplaincy has a financially viable future. Therefore the time is  now,  for  us  all  to  prayerfully  consider  our  giving.   As  mentioned  at  the  AGM,  if  we  were  all  to consider  giving  just  one  euro  per  day,  this would  transform  the  finances  of  the  Chaplaincy.   It may enable your council to consider offering a stipend (salary) to a future Priest in Charge.  This appeal is not  only  to  the members  of  the  congregation  resident  here  in  France,  but  to  all  visitors,  secondary home owners, holiday makers  and casual attendees.

We have a new Planned Giving Officer  in Joan Stewart, who would welcome your call, all giving is  in confidence and is known only to Joan and the treasurer.  We would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Mike Mylod and Colin Grimshaw for all the work they put into the Planned Giving scheme over the past few years

Cross ? Do you ever get cross ?  What makes you, if ever you do, lose your temper ?

Well, oddly enough, it was a Wednesday morning and three things happened to me, one after the other, each of which successively made me feel irritated, made me feel angry, ultimately made me lose my temper.   And I began to wonder whether or not I was beginning to become a little too much like the Pharisees, cross because people were not conforming to what was held to be an obvious standard of right and proper behaviour.

I’m driving into the Thalassa Novatel to go swimming.  I’m followed into the car parking by a large 4 by 4.  As I turn left to go round the one way system, the other car goes right into the bottom car park.  But as I sweep round in a circle, to my surprise, the other car has come the wrong way round in search of a nearer car parking space that does not at present exist.  I brake and look up at his windscreen, wondering what planet he’s on !

I have a great half an hour’s swim in the heated pool, then I go back to the changing room for a shower and then to get dressed.  Dans le vestiaire des hommes is a lady and I point out to her that this is a bloke’s changing room.

Back in the flat, I’m expecting the delivery of two new mattresses – the old ones are now ten‐years‐old and a bit more depressed than I am !  A van driver arrives with the two new ones but tells me that he is not instructed to take the old ones away to dump them.  I’m upset and share my upset categorically with him but he’s completely unsympathetic so I just give him the sort of look that should turn him into stone – but his heart is already clearly less than flesh or he would have apologised to me for not being able to do that for which I had already paid  !

Well, I’ve expressed my irritation by sharing with you what seems so obviously, so clearly, wrong to right thinking.   But am I being a Pharisee, condemning folk because they fail to meet my idea of what is right and proper ?

So what makes you annoyed these days and are you sufficiently at ease in yourself to share with Jacqui* what nowadays bothers you?

Priest-in-charge,

Marché de Noël

18th November '17 at Saint Hilaire du Voust Same day as the Autumn Bazaar? That's because it's one and the same thing! This year it is intended to have more of a Christmas theme than autumnal one. With this in mind we are asking ALL members of the various congregations if you will consider buying and planting just one pot of two or three hyacinth bulbs, or similar spring flower, when they appear in the shops usually about October. Several of us have spare bowls if required, but a flower pot with a pretty cover will do just as well. Another Addition is a "glass" department on the jewellery stall. Maggie Calton is waiting for your good glass (not Pyrex, odd glasses, etc.) So any spare, unwanted crystal bowls, sets of glasses, vases or ornaments will be gratefully received. Thank you in anticipation!
