From the Staff-Parish Relations Committee Get to Know… Sophia Clark

This is the third article in a “Get to know…”

series of articles published by Mt.

Sylvan’s Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC). The goal of

these articles is to help Mt. Sylvan’s

congregation get to know our church staff

and learn more about their responsibilities and what they do for our church.

Before taking her position at Mt. Sylvan in February of 2016, Sophia and her family moved to the Triangle from Louisville, KY. After 5 ½ years of working in construction project management in Louisville, Sophia felt God’s pull to move the administrative skills she had developed in the for-profit business sector, to the church. She began working as the Administrative Coordinator at one of the biggest Methodist church in Jefferson County, St. Paul UMC. Sophia acquired 3 ½ years of United Methodist administrative experience and launched their justice ministry and homeless ministry programs. Sophia is also a songwriter and has written and performed successful car commercials on the radio and was the opening act for many artists like Biz Markie, T.I., and Nappy Roots (Hip hop groups). When she transitioned to the world of ministry, Sophia took that life-long love of singing and songwriting to glorify God to the best of her ability. She has written anthems for St. Paul’s Touched Twice Clinic and performed an original piece at the 2017 NCCUMC Annual Conference (she was really nervous). Sophia’s husband, Adam Clark, is the Director of World Relief Durham a refugee resettlement organization. Sophia, Adam, and their two older kids, Chris and Tatiyana, moved to Durham in 2015 for Adam to assume his position at World

Relief. The couple met and fell in love in 2009 serving in the same homeless ministry soup kitchen at Jeff Street Baptist church in KY, where they would later be married. In November 2017, they welcomed their first and only child, Sparrow Nicene Clark. According to Sophia, “and she will stay an only child! You may have had the pleasure of meeting the Sparrow bird. She’s very…. exuberant...” It was truly a blessing to find Mt. Sylvan for Sophia and her family. It’s given Sophia the opportunity to continue to use all of her gifts to assist the community, support the body of Christ, and sing the songs God has put on her heart. Sophia's is the first face you see when you enter the church office. Be prepared to be met with a smile :)

What Does the Ministry Assistant Do for Our Church? The Ministry Assistant position has a primary duty of performing administrative functions directly related to the day-to-day operation of the office of Mt. Sylvan UMC including the assignment of and scheduling space usage and supervising office procedures. This position supports all aspects of communication both internal and external. Sophia’s major responsibilities include answering the phone and maintaining the voice mail system, greeting and assisting visitors and members, and promoting a ministry of hospitality as the first contact with the public in the front office. Sophia is also responsible for producing, editing, and emailing the monthly Grapevine newsletter and weekly updates through Constant Contact. She also composes and copies the weekly church bulletin and special occasion bulletins.

From the Staff-Parish Relations Committee Sophia is responsible for working with pastors and the membership secretary regarding membership, sorting and distributing incoming mail to Staff and Church Council, ordering office supplies, attending weekly Staff meetings, and recording and distributing meeting minutes. She organizes and tidies up the Narthex and Sanctuary areas on Friday Additional activities include composing material for digital media programs for

church services and events, maintaining the website for Mt. Sylvan, monitoring social media activities, coordinating the weekly church flower calendar, arranging access to church facilities, vehicles, and equipment for members and visitors. The Ministry Assistant also attends the Church Council meetings. As you can see, Sophia does so much for Mt. Sylvan and we are truly blessed to have her on the Mt. Sylvan team!

Bud Vases If you or someone you visit has any small flower “bud” vases that they would like to contribute or return to the church, please bring them to the unlocked closet shelves in the Administrative hallway of the Church. Our congregational care team needs them to distribute flowers to those in the hospital and at home. This is a very important ministry to make sure that our members that are not always able to be with us on Sunday mornings are still connected to our church body and spiritually cared for by the congregation. Thank you for your thoughtfulness.

Sign-Up for Sunday Night Supper One of the parts of every Sunday night youth gathering is our dinner that we share together as a group. Our parents and other members of the church have always been gracious with providing a meal for our students and leaders. Sunday Suppers are a super simple way of having fellowship for our youth each

Sunday before our meetings. Please peruse the list of available dates, and volunteer to help during one or two Sunday evenings. To sign up to provide food and serve for a night, please go to http://tinyurl.com/y4poc36n or contact Lance Rogers at [email protected] to sign up.

Bishop Ward challenged the youth to raise $500,000 for NC Storm

Relief. The NC Conference will match all gifts made to Youth Storm

Response up to $500,000. Mt. Sylvan’s youth have adopted a goal of

$1,500 and will be visiting SS classrooms this month to give you more

info and request your donations personally.

Let’s step up, Mt. Sylvan! To give:

Checks should be made out to Mt. Sylvan with Youth Storm Response

    S00297 in the memo line.

Or donate online at https://tinyurl.com/yd5aradd and scroll down to

Thank you for your generosity and care for those who’ve been

    devastated by storms and flooding.

On September 22, 2018, Bishop Hope Morgan Ward joined youth from

across the districts gathered at the bi-annual Conference Council on

Youth Ministries (CCYM) meeting. She delivered a strong challenge to

our youth to consider how we would respond with generosity to our

sisters and brothers in need following Hurricane Florence .

Dear Mt. Sylvan Family, Thank you so much for all the cards, thoughts and prayers for our family during the death of my Dad. The prayers and good thoughts were felt and the cards were so appreciated. Thank you for being such a loving and caring church family.

Love, the Ryan and Laseher Families Words are not enough to express our gratitude for being there for us when we needed you most. The clinging cross I hold daily as I pray. The prayer shawl hugs me with God's and Mt. Sylvan's families love. You came to the hospital to support my family. How can I ever thank you enough. We are humbled in Christs love. Andy & Debbie Riley I want to take a moment to thank each of you that reached out to help me during the time of my move. It was very unexpected and quick, (the house was sold) I enjoyed my years there and the owners were very nice, however Jesus had his plans and I am so gracious for all of your support during this time. Again, thank you.

Sincerely, Stacey Satterwhite Dear Mt. Sylvan Family,

Words can’t describe how grateful I am for the love I have received since my injury. I am so lucky to have a church family that cares so much about me. I love my prayer quilt and I sleep with it every night. Thank you for all the cards, visits, and most of all, the prayers for healing. Please continue to pray for my recovery.

    Love, Faye

Thank you for the prayers, hugs, cards and meals that you all have shared with our family during my father's last three weeks. The prayer blanket and clinging cross were so very special to Dad. We continue to be sustained by your love.

Gratefully, The MacDonald and Knobeloch family Church Work Day Thank You We had a successful Church Work Day despite the weather! Several people worked in the rain, cleaning out storm drains, raking up debris from the previous night's storm, putting in landscape blocks, sweeping pollen away and blowing debris from sidewalks. Lots of work was done inside, and I hope everyone noticed how the Sanctuary shined the next morning! I know the Youth appreciate their new ceiling tiles! Due to the weather, we didn't put out new mulch, but we plan to have a Fall Work Day to focus on the exterior. Allen Andrews, Mrs. Armstrong & Bryant, Herb Cimburke, Deborah Goke, Richard Jakobczyk, Darlene & Mike Lumpkin, Bill Pinkerton, Paul & JohnPaul Rodio, Linda Skinner, Robert & Susan White, Abby, Madi & Tyler - you guys are Rock Stars!! I really appreciate all of your hard work! Kris Ferrell, Trustee Chair CROP Walk Success Thank You Thank you so very much to all who supported the CROP Walk and made it a HUGE success! With your support, we raised $3,920!! This money will have a ripple effect in the community and impact countless lives all over the world. We really appreciate your endless generosity, and can’t thank you enough. Doug & Kris Ferrell, team Mt. Sylvan UMC captains

    Church Council Update

Church Council is the leadership body of the church and is composed of church staff, committee chairs, and other appointed individuals. Church Council meets every other month to take up the business of the church, direct resources, and tend to spiritual needs. For the first part of 2019, there have been three meetings. There was a Feb. 17 Special Called Meeting to approve the funds necessary for our new Music Director, Jeff Whicker. (We snapped him up while we had the chance.) At the Feb. 26 regular meeting, we reviewed the work of the committees, something we do at every regular meeting. Much of the work of the church is accomplished by the committees, so we devote a good deal of time to their work. At the April 23 regular meeting, we addressed some long needed updates to the Cemetery Policy. The policy will be published and available for review by the congregation. The Church Council also approved a special giving Sunday for the cemetery’s maintenance needs. Church Council authorized the creation of a sketch plan for our church property. This is not a

full-fledged site plan, but a helpful first step to guide decisions on what is possible on our existing property and the properties acquired over the last several years. So, that is a brief update on some of the more interesting issues taken up by your Church Council.

Vision Process Workshop! If you have an idea, or just the kernel on an idea, come to a Vision workshop. We will help you work out the details to bring your idea to life. Ideas can be small details that would make our church more welcoming, or they could be a massive undertaking that will require much planning. Small or big, the idea needs to have a start, and a Vision workshop is where you begin. The next/last workshop date is Thursday 5/16 6:30-8:00 pm There will be childcare at this meeting. The workshop will be held in the Parlor.

    Kinder Garden

From the Mt Sylvan Garden Shed - What’s Up in the Garden! Hello all. We have made great strides in our efforts to garden year-round, while making the garden more manageable for the number of people working in the beds. We experimented with winter crops this year, and after a couple of months of just surviving, the plants have quickly bloomed into crops ready to harvest. We have a variety of lettuces (including several varieties of leaf lettuce). The collards and green cabbages are about finished but the red cabbage, swiss chard, and cilantro are flourishing. And the kale! We have 3 varieties (Curly Leaf, Dinosaur, and Russian – each good for a different type of dish). The snap peas, Amish peas, and fava beans are blooming and should have produce soon. There will be onions, garlic, and red potatoes. Radishes of all kinds. If you would like to try any of our vegetables, let a gardener know and we will be sure to let you try some of the harvest.

This year we have added flowers to the bounty. The daffodils were beautiful, and we look forward to the summer bulbs

blooming. We will also add some of the favorite annuals like zinnias and cosmos. We are finishing up a number of structural changes in the garden. You will notice more raised beds. We are (hopefully) weed-proofing the walkways by laying down a barrier covered with wood chips. New soil and compost have been added, and the compost piles have been improved (and are doing well thanks to the Sylvan Seniors and the Sunday morning kitchen staff). The worm composting is doing well.

Remember, everyone is welcome in the garden. No special skills or strong physical abilities are needed to support the garden. There are ways everyone and anyone can contribute to the garden mission! Join us in the garden to celebrate our first ten years on Sunday June 30th.

Needed in the garden this month: We need more thick cardboard to put under the wood chips. If you have some to donate, please put it by the garden shed. Special Thanks this month goes to the Rodios and the Spains for donating used refrigerator/freezers after the one we had stopped cooling. Thank you!

    The Summer Kinder Garden Program

begins on Wednesday, May 22. Our very own "Aunt Bee" is excited to welcome 21 eager Kinder Gardeners for our "BEE" Attitudes theme this year as we grow our garden and our faith together.

Please check our Kinder Garden website at http://www.mtsylvanumckindergarden.com/

as well as the church Facebook page for exciting updates each week, pictures, and our new Tiny Seeds Library tab with picture book suggestions and "digging deeper" devotions for parents."
