Transcript of Church Matters - Euless First United Methodist Church · Church Matters Church Matters ... Barker's...
Since the last newsletter, much has changed to the north of our land! It was difficult to watch the 2 beautiful oaks go down, and the northern end of our parking lot has been dramatically reduced!
As you know by now, the most significant news is the status of our building plans. With the completion of the Right of Way negotiations and the settlement on the administration building (and all other wonderful ways that building served over the years), it is time to look forward. We have been contemplating the expansion and renovation of our building, as the settlement funds have been allotted for this. We have contacted gff Architecture firm (they don’t capitalize it, so we won’t, either), and had numerous meetings detailing our needs for ministry. This plan includes many renovations with a long term 40 year plan. We realize the need to alter our current facilities drastically to attract families in the future so there is a Euless First in 40 years. This plan looks like it will be 7.5– 9.0 million in renovations. Simultaneously, we were
approached with a generous offer for our property– which means a move and build new.
We want to take all necessary steps carefully so that we make sure whatever we do, we move forward with the assurance of God leading us.
On February 27, the Trustees unanimously voted to recommend to the Church Council that we move forward with selling the church and moving locations. Then on March 6, the Church Council (elected leaders and committee chairs) approved the recommendation. Their recommendation to a Church Conference (on March 26, 12:15 p.m.) is “To move forward with a relocation place for Euless First UMC subject to progress on purchase of land and sale of existing property. “
We will be hosting a series of informational meetings for anyone to attend to find out more about these

proposals. All meetings, except one, will be in the Swor Parlor. Here are dates and times still available:
Monday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m.
Tuesday, March 21 at 7:00 p.m.
Thursday, March 23 at 11:30 a.m.
Finally, Steve will have a Q&A on Sunday, March 26 during Sunday School in the Youth Room.
At a Church Conference (everyone is welcome, but only professing church members can vote), we will take a vote as a congregation to approve or not approve the recommendation. The Church Conference will be on Sunday, March 26 at 12:15 p.m. in the Sanctuary.
What does this all mean? We are not totally sure, but we do know that God is leading us. Through our diligent prayer, we have moved forward with the assurance of the presence of God in all our decisions.
Is there a chance we won’t move even if all vote to do so? Yes, we will not hastily move to a property that is not right for us, but as of now we are continuing to ask the question and pray to God for guidance.

more volunteers, and have multiple ways that you can serve. Please contact Sharon Menix if you feel God calling you to service.
We have been blessed with an incredible opportunity to reach beyond our community, beyond our borders, all the way to Panama!
Euless First UMC has a long tradition of mission work; we very likely have more consecutive years of participation in youth mission trips as any church in the conference.
Beginning April 21, we go beyond youth mission trips with a construction trip to Panama for adults. Three of us, Heather Capshaw, Janice Kasten, and Steve
Heyduck are going. We will be going to Santiago, Panama, and serving with United Methodist missionaries David and Cindy Ceballos.
At our Pancake Dinner on Shrove Tuesday (February 28) the United Methodist Men prepared an excellent dinner, and together we raised $1600 for our trip. There is still more we could raise. Keep an eye out for additional fundraisers.
Though it is too late to sign more people up to go on this trip, here are ways you can help:
1. Pray for the people of Panama
2. Pray for God’s Kingdom work in Panama
3. Pray for Heather, Janice, and Steve, and the rest of the team.
Thank you for your support and your prayers! We can’t wait to share with you about God’s awesome work when we get back!

Additionally, there are a ton of events coming up in the approaching months that really need the presence of additional adults. In particular, we are in need of adults to accompany our teenagers on their CTCYM Mission Experience in June (6/18 to 6/24), so don't let our students go without enough adult sponsors.

We really appreciate you cleaning out your garages and attics to help us! We hope that you will continue to support our efforts by encouraging folks to stop by our food booth at Euless' Arbor Daze on Saturday, April 29, and help

One of my favorite times of the year is coming: Easter! I loved it more as a kid than Christmas…not sure why. I think even as a child, Christmas seemed very stressful, whereas Easter was more relaxed. As an adult Easter still seems less stressful, but the meaning behind it is very different. While I love reflecting on the fact that a baby was
born to save me, it is the adult He became and what He went through at Easter that really touches my heart. As much as I can try to imagine the pain He went through on the Cross, I will never know exactly how that feels. Nor can I even imagine what was going on in His head. But He did it…for me…wow…that is hard
to comprehend. Talk about a Hero! Which reminds me, Vacation Bible School is coming up in just a matter of months!!! How about we all be heroes and help the kids in the community learn about Heroes of the Bible? Will you join me?

7 Habits of a Highly Effective Steward Part 2
of 7
Habit 2: Trust God to Provide Trust is a foundational concept for practicing stewardship. This may be one of the most difficult habits of all to develop. For many of us, it’s easier to trust God for our eternal salvation than it is to trust him for our daily living. When it comes to practical things like putting food on our table or making the mortgage payment, we operate as if we are on our own. As a result we often worry and experience anxiety.
Fear is the result of our inability to trust God in all
aspects of our lives. This actually causes some of us to stockpile assets beyond all reason. Others worry about every possibility of loss, including health issues, layoffs and economic collapse. There’s a big difference between constructive planning – and destructive worry. There is no reason for us to be bound by fear. We need to put our trust in God and to commit both our faith and our finances to Him.
“Instruct those who are rich in this present world not. . .to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy” (1Timothy 6:17).
Even though our culture tempts us to believe that accumulation brings happiness, as Christians we need to focus on trusting God. He has much to give us of far greater value than anything we can ever purchase or accumulate.
Trusting God to provide also means operating on His timetable and not our own. This is extremely difficult in many situations. We tend to want our needs met immediately. If this were always the case, there would be no opportunity for us to strengthen our faith – to believe and trust that our needs will be met according to God’s plan. These opportunities help to teach us patience and reliance on God. Reprinted by permission: Barnabas Foundation, Tinley Park, IL

Easter Cantata a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
The resurrection story is told through powerful music and moving narration in this Bradley Knight Cantata.
This production includes classic songs and hymns such as, “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” “Lamb of God,” “I've Just Seen Jesus,” and “Soon and Very Soon. “ When I Survey the Wondrous Cross also includes new songs from writers Geron Davis (“He's
Euless First is truly blessed by the choir each Sunday. They are diverse in their makeup, and always have a really good time together.

Alive”), Laura Story (“Remember”) and Michael W. Smith (“Prepare Ye the Way”) to bring together a masterful celebration of songs and narration for Easter.
The choral presentation of the Cantata is always a highlight of the season. Be sure to join us Easter morning for this wonderful celebration.
Holy Week, or the week leading up to Easter, is the time we remember the life and events of Christ’s last week on earth—from his triumphant entry into the city, to his last meal with dear friends, Jesus’ foretelling of his death and more importantly, his resurrection. Join us as we celebrate these moments April 9—16.
Easter is the highest, holiest day of the Christian Year! Translated out of
Christianese, this means that Easter, the day we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection, means more to Christians than any other day.
Easter reminds us that God is thirsty for a relationship with us. He
will never let death get in the way, but will turn death into life! We hope you will join us this Holy Week. Here is what’s coming:
Palm Sunday Services followed by a Pot-luck lunch and Egg Hunt on April 9. We’re taking candy-filled egg donations now!
Holy Week Daily Lunch Devotionals with Pastor Steve, April 10-14 at noon. Bring your lunch and join
us in the office conference room!
Holy Thursday Worship at 7:00 p.m. with Holy Thursday Communion in the Sanctuary, followed by a Foot Washing in the Family Life Center Café.
Good Friday Worship at 7:00 p.m. with a traditional Tenebrae Service.
Easter Services on April 16 will be at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. with the Choir Easter Cantata in both services. There will be an Easter Pot-luck Brunch for the entire church during the Sunday School hour, and there will be no Sunday School that morning. Bring a breakfast dish, and get ready for a glorious celebration!

From the Pastor still getting used to the idea of recognizing an old favorite pop culture reference as “30 years old or more.”
I hope I always remember the response. It was a humble, “I just try to live each day as it comes.”
Which is pretty much exactly what Jesus advised in Matthew 6:34: “Each day has enough trouble of it’s own.”
Sure, you might point out, Jesus was talking about worrying and anxiety over the future and possessions and materialism. But in that
I love that you all help me learn to follow Jesus better each day! Thank you!
Here’s a story of one of the ways this happened recently. You may remember that during February we had a string of sermons where we made reference to 1980’s pop culture. Scenes from Back to the Future and The Untouchables, and Rachel singing along with Whitney Houston and sharing a clip from “We Are the World.”
In a conversation with one of our nonagenarians (church member in their 90s), I confessed that I am
little conversation, I firmly believe the Holy Spirit told me that it works both ways on the timeline.
I will continue to look back over my life reflectively. I will continue to look forward to whatever future God is leading us toward.
But, thanks to you, I will do both of those in the context of living as much as possible in the present. That’s how I’ll follow Jesus a bit better today than yesterday and tomorrow than today.

Lent is a time for preparation for Easter. However, Easter itself is a season in the Christian Calendar, not just a one day event. The Easter Season is fifty days long and goes through the Day of Pentecost on June 4. It is a time to celebrate the resurrection of Christ.
2017 is already a year full of changes and transition. On Easter we are reminded that through the Resurrection, Christ goes from death to life! So
throughout the Season of Easter we’ll dig deeper into this idea with “Dying to Live.”
Beginning April 23, Euless First will explore aspects of life that first take a death to accomplish. Here is a look at what is coming:
The Tomb Is Still Empty
A Living Faith
Faith Sharing is Life Sharing
Giving Life to Others
Stages of Life
Join us for this wonderful season, as together we die to our past and are re-born to life together!

The Wesleyan Way, an 8 week study, helps seekers and believers to envision and practice discipleship as a way of life, and become a part of God’s work in
Wesleyan Way
What is our goal as people of faith? As a denomination we say it is to, “Make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”
At Euless First United Methodist Church we are striving, “to follow Jesus Christ a bit better today than yesterday. Through these efforts we develop a relationship with Christ and thus transform people, their lives, our community and the world.”
The reality is that our individual understanding of church/world/society can interfere with our ability to see others as if they are doing the best they can in each moment.
Here is an example. Sometimes we see young people dressed at church and think, “I was not raised to dress so casually.” or
“They are not bringing their best to God.”
We remember all that we were taught about church. We understand who God is and have expectations about how we are to act at church. Maybe it is not what someone is wearing, maybe it is that they want to bring coffee into the sanctuary, or that their children are not the quietest during the service. Regardless of the situation, it is the same. We, the church that are members and have expectations, might need to check ourselves before we speak. This is not the moral decay of the world, this is the unchurched interacting with the churched. The question is, “Does it really matter?” “Is this the fight that we should have?” “If I say something, am I acting
more like Christ in this moment?” “Does Jesus want this person here, or for them to be dressed right?”
We are all working through this life and working to follow Christ. Let us all take time to remember that Christ loves every one of us, and those jeans and sandals on Sunday morning really don’t matter. It might not be the dress we want our kids and other kids to wear, but they are still HERE! If we say something there is a really good chance that person will leave the church and never come back. As we now have more and more people with similar stories.
What is our message? Are we a place that loves you as you are and wants to develop a relationship, or do we love you based on the way you look or if you do the “right” thing?

Water is essential to life. Without it, we cease to exist.
This Lent, as Euless First United Methodist Church reflects on our thirst for God, we will also reflect on thirst throughout the world. In partnership with Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now), we will be raising funds to purchase water filters. Each filter costs $75. Our goal is to raise enough funds for 50 filters. So far we have raised enough to purchase 33
It might be difficult to imagine our day-to-day lives without clean drinking water. Unfortunately, this is the reality for one in 10 people around the globe. Water crisis and poor sanitation affect 2.5 billion people worldwide — women and children are among the most affected. An estimated 200 million hours each day are spent collecting water that is oftentimes contaminated.
Water-related disease kills 1 child every 21 seconds.
filters!
With Rise Against Hunger, we know that sustainable sources of clean, safe drinking water are key to breaking the cycle of poverty. When people no longer need to spend hours each week traveling to and from clean water sources, their time is freed up to attend school or earn wages.
Check out our display in front of the Swor Parlor and join us as we challenge thirst this Lent.
