Laminated arches of douglas fir stained a deep red brown contrast with fir ceiling of natural finish. Louvered screen a t rear of sanctuary conceals pipes of second hand organ, purchased a t a great saving. Organ console is concealed dire+ly behind panel a t altar table. Choir sits behind lower screen which aligns with panel. When seated their heads may be seen through the more widely spaced louvers .

Thk New Park Avenue Congregational Church

The new church replaces the famil iar white wooden church h i c h was b u i l t i n 1885 by a group of laymen a s a community church. For years i t was leased t o various rel igious gi-oups u n t i l March 10, 1899, when it was established a s a Congregational Church. Two years l a t e r the bUi lding was purchased from the proprietors. In 1928 the present parish h a l l was b u i l t and has served a s a center f o r community a c t i v i t i e s f o r many years,

Plans f o r a new church were made a s ear ly a s 1928, but the depression and World War I1 delayed any action, I n 1955 the first steps were taken when the church school house on Wollaston Avenue was,purchased, a new kitchen was ins t a l l ed and a building fund was e stablished. I n 1959 the a rch i t ec t s were chosen and ground was broken i n July of 1960. The f i r s t worship service was held on Easter Sunday of 1961 (April 2) and the church was dedicated on Sunday, May 14, 1961. . .

The archi tec ts were asked t o design a church which would express welcome and inspi re reverence alid yet be spacious and economical t o maintain. 'de f e e l tha t they have succeeded admLrably and tha t t h e i r plans were carried out with skill and dedication by our builder, Hans Tobiason, and h i s sons.

Cost: Including pews and chancel furni ture; $195,000 plus a rch i t ec t ' s fee.

Construction: Inner and outer walls of br ick with a concrete block core. Wall thickness 1 2 inches. Floors a r e of reinforced concrete. The roof i s supported by laminated wood arches which a r e f i r e resis tant . The sp i re i s of s ta in less s t e e l with wood f ins . It i s grounded t o function a s a l ightning rod. The cupola houses the b e l l and speakers f o r t h e chimes.

General Infcrmation

The pews a r e of African mahogany cut from selected logs.

The stained g lass was imported from Belg5.m and .West Germany, except for the medallions i n t he chapel windows, which were designed by the late Cyrus DaUin ' 5 *, and :Xa shioned i n h i s studio . The Skinner pipe organ was designed by Mr. Skinner i n 1919 f o r the chapel a t St . Nark's School. It has approximately 1600 pipes varying i n s i ze f r o m one inch t o 16 feet . It was acquired from the school l a s t year and has been rebui l t with tonal changes t o adapt t o t h i s building. It occupies an area k$ feet deep behind the screen a t t h e back of the chancel.

The heating and vent i la t ing system consists of two o i l - f i red hot a i r u n i t s ; which can be adapted t o a i r conditioning. Heat passes through,.:ducts i n the f l o o r t o reg is te rs a t t he outside wal l of the church; it i s then recirculated t o t h e furnaces. This arrangement permits maximum comfort through radiant f l o o r heat , and prevents heat from s t ra t i fy ing near the roof. A s a consequence, heating is effect ive and economical.

I n addition t o t h e chapel, choir room and service f a c i l i t i e s , there are three classrooms f o r pre-primary children. They a r e the c r ib room, nursery and kindergarten, Two doors have been provided i n t h e la rges t of these rooms so tha t i t may be pa r t i t i oned . l a t e r i f necessary. There i s a l so a small conference room, whose back w a l l i s formed by a portion of the stone foundation of our old church.

It i s hoped tha t eventually a church school wing r ay be addedon the s i te of t h e present house on Wollaston Avenue. The church has been designed t o accommodate such an addition.

88 Loeke School. Neo-renaissance, red brick, 1899 with an addition in 1909, built by O.B. Marston; architect: Gay & Roctor, Boston

An imposing structure set we1 on its site, this building was Arlington's fourth brick school- house. It was rightfully described: "a handsome appearance through the tasteful disposal of the materials used and by the excellent proportions maintained." The land, formerly a part of the Addi- son Hill estate (see 83 APPLETON ST.), has been the site of a schoolhouse since 1878 when the wooden Locke School was dedicated. This structure was moved in 1899 to Park Ave. and the rail- road crossing and used by the railroad and the Peirce & Winn Co. until its demolition ca. 1936. The Locke Schools have been named for a family important in the town's history since its earliest settle- ment; Benjamin, William, and Joseph Locke were among the earliest residents along Paul Revere Rd. and Appleton Street.

This is one of the more modem churches in Arlington; its architect, Pietro Belluschi, was dean of the architecture school at M.I.T. and one of the nation's leading ecclesiastical architects.

The church's parish house was built in 1929 by Samuel Alcock of Boston; its architect was Allen & Colleus of Boston. At the time it was hoped that a new church would be built, also, and plans for the parish house were drawn to conform with the anticipated church structure; but the Depression required that further building be postposed. The second floor of the parish house was not completed until 1946. Stained glass windows by Arthur M. Dallin, son of Cyrus Dallin, which had been installed in the first church, are preserved in the present building complex's chapel.

This has been the site of a church since the Union Church, a federation of several Protestant denominations drawing its worshippers from the newly developed Arlington Heights area, moved here in 1889 from Union Hall, still standing at 41 Park Ave., where senices had beem held since 188 1.

PARK TERRACE (E 8)

R m D School. Victorian, red brick, 1873 This structure was built to replace the first Russell School, built in 1861 on land donated by

James Russell and destroyed by fire L? 1872. Although now blocked from view at its actual address on Medford St. by the Catholic High School built in 1900, the 1873 Russell School was once a pic- turesque and dominating structure in Arlington Center. Its high roofs and ornaments were removed as fire hazards, however, and little of the original sillouette remains. Condemned and ready for demolition in 1960, the building was purchased by the Archdiocese and completely rehabilitated for use as a high school annex.

Russell Park In 1866 the Town voted to accept from the Hon. James Russell the donation of a large lot

of land west of the Russell School for a public park. It became the site of the Adams primary school and was used for the Russell and Adams Schools' playground. The Adams Schoo! was eventually moved to Chestnut St., where it was known as Hibemean Hall until its demolition. As early as 1905 there were complaints that the Town had violated the terms of Russell's gift by not planting trees at Russell Park, but the open commor? gradually dwindled in size and usage until in 1958 it was paved over as a municipal parking lot.

Our personal problems and concerns a r e overshadowed by the tragedy t h a t has en- gulfed the world with g r i e f and apprehension.

We ask t h a t thy compassion and supporting arm be f e l t by the family of 0u.r l a t e Presi- dent . We beseech thy.guidsnce f o r the new Pres ident a s the mantle of leadership f a l l s upon him i n t h i s f a t e f u l hour.

We a r e thankful f o r the processes of govern- ment by which cont inui ty of r u l e has-been preserved i n our land without c i v i l panic o r turmoil .
