Dear Friends, April 2016

One of the less attractive traits of human beings is the way we load expecta-tions on to people that are unrealistic and unfair. Then, when the expectations are not met, we criticise the others and not ourselves.

Jesus was well aware of what people wanted him to be and do. He knew he could not be the conquering liberator of their imagination because his path was to lead to defeat and death – something very hard for his followers to ac-cept. St Luke tells us that even when Jesus hung on the cross ‘the leaders scoffed at him, saying “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Mes-siah of God, his chosen one!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save your-self!”’ (Luke 23:35-37.) These must have been bitter words for the Son of God to hear, when he knew that he could have summoned legions of angels to re-lease him from the cross, but chose not to.

In that choice he in fact exceeded all expectation. Instead of liberating the nation he sacrificed himself so that every man, woman and child in the world could come back to God. That’s how much he loved us.

No-one on that first Good Friday believed that Jesus would rise again, al-though he had told them he would. On Easter Day he turned defeat into vic-tory and silenced the mockery of his enemies by a far greater miracle than stepping down from the cross would have been. However, he still didn’t do what we might have expected, namely to appear to the Jewish leaders and Ro-man soldiers. Instead he appeared secretly to his friends, that not very won-derful bunch of disciples. Gradually the message that he was alive again spread and spread, so that now all round the world people can rejoice in God’s great work in saving lost humanity. He has done far more than we could ask, or think, or deserve. It’s a secret that we can all share in one of our churches over this Easter season and beyond ‘Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again!’ David

Our Annual Parochial Church Meeting for Worlingworth and Southolt is on Thursday, 7th April at 7pm in St Mary's Church. Reverend David Burrell will chair the meeting. At the vestry meeting the churchwardens are elected for the coming year and can be voted for by any parishioner on the civic electoral roll. Nomination forms will be in the church from the end of March. The second part of the meeting is for members on the church electoral roll, when we have the churchwardens' reports, financial reports and any other church

business for the past year. Members of the PCC are elected, and Treasurer, Secretary and sides people are chosen. Finally, a first brief meeting of the newly elected PCC is held if there is any urgent business to deal with. We hope to see you there. The church belongs to everyone.

Broadband Options At the March meeting of the Parish Council we were pleased to welcome County Broadband and Fram Broadband, who both gave presentations on their plans to bring superfast broadband to those parts of Suffolk that BT cannot at present reach (including some outlying areas of Worlingworth). The Parish Council are currently considering the information and what actions should be taken to ensure the best outcome for the village. Keep Your Village Clean – Please Clear Up After Your Dog! The Parish Council have recently installed two new dog bins, bringing our total up to 6 placed strategically around the village. A 7th dog bin is currently being acquired and will be installed soon. There really is no excuse not to clear up after your dog. We live in a lovely village; let’s not spoil it with thoughtless behaviour. Thank You to All Our Spring Cleaners It was great to see so many of you turning out to spring clean the village and although it was a success with 10½ big black bin bags of rubbish picked up, it is a shame that so much needed to be collected. Please take your litter home with you. Thanks also to the ladies of the WI who took on the task of washing signs throughout the village as part of the ‘Clean for the Queen’ campaign. Fly Posters in the Village There have recently been a number of posters put up around the village. The Parish Council understand that this is useful way of advertising village events, but concerns have been raised about the legality of such posters and about the littering that they can cause. After much discussion at the last Parish Council meeting the general feel-ing was that posters relevant to the village will be tolerated (if they are not relevant they will be removed) and please take them down again straight after your event so that they don’t disintegrate, fall off and turn into litter. Bonfires

The Parish Council has received a complaint about inconsiderate lighting of bonfires causing unnecessary nuisance to neighbours. Please be aware that anyone causing a nuisance in this way can result in the issuing of an "abatement notice" and failure to

comply with this can lead to a fine of £5,000. Further details and advice can be found on the Parish Council news page of the website (see above).

News from Worlingworth School Ofsted Inspection We are delighted to provide you with a copy of the Ofsted report following our recent inspec-tion. The inspector, Gulshan Kayembe, has graded the school “Outstanding” in all areas. This grading reflects the hard work and commitment from the staff, governors, parents and pupils in making Worlingworth the great school that we knew it could be. The report high-lights that “Pupils thrive in a safe environment that nurtures both their personal development and their academic achievement.” Regardless of this “Outstanding” we will continue to drive our school forward to ensure that each and every pupil has the best primary school education possible. Light Day We enjoyed a ‘Light’ themed day, learning about light from the perspective of RE and Science.

We developed our understanding about Jesus being Light of the world and how rainbows are

formed.

Book Week

Linking in to our whole school Reading Challenge this term, the children demonstrated real

commitment and an enjoyment of reading during our special Book Week. All the children

participated fully in the book week which was based around the theme : Where does your read-

ing take you?. Daily Cosy and Buddy reading times encouraged the children to enjoy the pleas-

ures of reading with others and in different places. It was fantastic to have parents and grand-

parents popping up all over the school - sharing in this calm reading time. On World Book

Day the children all looked amazing dressed up as book characters. Our Big Book Quiz in the

afternoon was a great success for all ages – with two teams showing off their book knowledge

and drawing to win a prize! Finally we relaxed and got cosy with our bedtime story session – a

reminder to all of us how wonderful it is to be read to at any age!

Topics

Next term our topic will be ‘Changes’, particularly thinking about concepts that change over

time. This is a very exciting topic, with scope for lots of project work! Willows will be focusing

on ‘Babies and Growing’ and ‘Melting, Mixing and Munching’, Acorn: ‘The Seaside and

Holidays’ and ‘Equality’ Maple ‘Clothing, Food, Leisure and Entertainment. We are look-

ing forward to learning more about this topic!

Tea and Toys

Tea and Toys meet every week at 1:30pm on the first and third Thursdays in the school hall.

This is a great opportunity to meet other with other parents and for the children to have some

fun. Tea and toys is run by a highly qualified Early Years teacher, and one of our Governors,

Mrs Goodin, so please do come along and join in the fun!

Scarecrow Trail July 16th and 17th

We hope to make this a community event and involve young and old and families making scarecrows for the trail. We are also working on having some games and a BBQ to bring all those involved and visitors to join in .

To help with making the scarecrows we will be running a workshop on May 7th at 2.00pm in the Sports Pavilion, where Christine McKechnie will demonstrate and help.

Bedfield & Monk Soham Gardening Club

Our March meeting was a propagation evening. Members bought some plants from their own gardens. Gloria provided wholesale herbaceous plants, roses, and summer bulbs. Members were well equipped with aprons and gloves for mixing compost, fine bark and NPK granules.

We propagated well over one hundred plants etc which will be sold on our garden stall at the Bedfield Fete on July 9th

Our next meeting is on April 15th 7.30pm. Lucy Skinner of Woottens Nursery will be coming to talk about planting up shady and dry areas of the garden and putting together planting for borders. If you would like to join us as a non member you are very welcome. The charge will be £3.00. If you intend to come, please ring Barbara Lee on 01728 628 048 or Gloria Bell on 01728 628 048 to make sure we put out enough seat-ing.

Woottens are an award winning nursery. Lucy will be bringing some plants with her

from the nursery for some plant retail therapy !!

Worlingworth Cricket Club has entered the sponsored Adnams Petanque League for 2016 which consists of 49 local teams divided into 10 groups. The Cricket Club is with 4 other teams in the local area. They play home and away during the summer. ( ie 8 games )

Obviously they are looking for players to be in a pool of players that they can call on to make a team for the day.

Old. young, couples , families , singles can be in the team. You don’t have to be a member of the Cricket Club to take part so please invite your friends and fam-ily. We need a minimum of 4 in a team and a maximum of 8

The Worlingworth Garden Club is now into its second year. We had a good year with talks and visits and only missed one meet-ing due to bad weather. At the end of April we are looking for-ward to visiting Blakenham Woodland Garden and are hoping the bluebells and maybe the magnolias will putting on a good show. STRAY CAT. For the last four weeks at least I have had a black and white cat living in my garden. He/she is quite chunky with short legs and eats the scraps which I put out for the birds. Since it has been very cold I have supplemented this because it is obvi-ously hungry. However, I have my own cat and cannot take in another. Please let me know if you know who it belongs to. Monk Soham Coffee Morning.

A very happy time was had on St. David's day when Eleri and David

Whitham hosted the village coffee morning. Delicious welsh cakes

and a tea bread, called Bara Brith were served to a large gathering in

their home.

The April village coffee morning will be at the home of Alison and

Mike Woods on Tuesday 5th 10.30 - 12.00.

Mrs Yvonne Gyford, formerly of 10 Greenlands, Bedfield, passed peacefully away in Ipswich Hospital on Tuesday 15th March. Her funeral service is to be held at Seven Hills Crematorium on 8th April at 2:15pm. Family flowers only; donations in memory of Mrs Gyford for Arthritis UK.

Mrs Gyford was a familiar sight in the village, walking

her dogs Bobby and then Bengie, and she will be re-

membered for the fruit, flower and vegetable stall which

she ran with her husband, Peter, for over 30 years.

HIGH SUFFOLK COMMUNITY BUS

Except at Bank Holidays, every week the bus runs to Framlingham ( Tuesdays ), to Stowmarket ( Thursdays ), and to Diss ( Fridays ). In addition, there are services to Ipswich ( first Saturday and third Wednesday of the month ), to Bury St. Edmunds ( first Wednesday and third Saturday of the month ), and to Norwich ( second Saturday and fourth Wednesday of the month ) During April dates of these services will be:
