Battle Of The Sexes

Most golfers have heard this catch phrase, often used over the past few years to support a drive towards more environmentally conscious practices in the golf industry. The United States Golf Association brought this phrase and debate to center stage in 2014 with its conditioning of Pinehurst #2, the host site of the Men’s and Women’s US Open Championships.

The problem is, while a catchy hyperbole, it just doesn’t make sense. Like many golfers, when given a reasonable choice, I would prefer good environmental stewardship, but not at the expense of hitting off firm, dry and brown grass. Brown is not green, it is just brown. Brown, dry and dead grasses create a dif-ferent golf experience that we are not interested in here at River Landing. As we have noted before, while we respect the beauti-ful Village of Pinehurst and its fine courses, we have no interest in replicating the playing conditions of its #2 course.

So we are left with a question. How can we at River Landing be better stewards of the environment and the courses entrusted to us, while maintaining the high standard of playing condi-tions we have come to enjoy? The answer was brought to us by someone who has more at stake in the success of the River Landing golf courses than most, our golf course designer, Clyde Johnston. His answer… develops a forward thinking approach with “sustainability” at its core. In other words, employ best industry practices that will create good experiences today while preserving for tomorrow. We are in the process of learning more from Clyde and look forward to progressive solutions that fit the needs of our club and members.

"Brown In The New Green" Cont'dresources away from non-playing areas onto playing surfaces. Unbeknownst to us and with the aforemen-tioned, we have already designed and executed phase 1 of the River Landing “sustainability” initiative. For phase 2, we look forward to Clyde’s leadership to guide us. We anticipate some of these changes will include “vegetative buffers” around lakes, ornamental plantings in key locations to improve visual appeal and a de-monstrable recycling effort.

In an effort to proactively communicate with and educate our members on sustainability, Clyde will be our guest speaker at the poolside chat on Monday, May 4th. I would encourage all members to attend this ses-sion to learn more. Clyde will be discussing the science of sustainability, how the golf industry has embraced sustainability and finally how these practices will make River Landing even more spectacular.

We look forward to a great year and keeping our community in a position of leadership.

Stories were told and memories relived as 38 seniors celebrated the 5th annual

“Golden Oldies” dinner on March 13th. Each year the Golden Oldies, couples married 50 years plus, get to-gether for dinner at the club to celebrate their good fortune. As in the past it was a memorable and enjoyable evening.

This year featured the addition of 4 newlywed couples, couples joining the group for the first time. They were Bob & Dottie Obenour, Alan & Carolyn Stampe, Tom & Carol Whalen, and Wayne & Darleen Weller and were awarded flowers and marched in to a round of applause. Our Legends, couples married over 60 years, were also recognized and included Tom & Lois Edergton,Taylor & Marlene Jefferson, and Worth & Pat Wilson. Their longevity sets a high standard for the rest of the group.

For those couples that will be celebrating 50 years of marriage in 2016 we look forward to you joining us next year.

PAUL BURCH EMPLOYEE EXCELLENCE AWARDFIRST QUARTER WINNERS

There are so many deserving employees – those who you see every day but also those who work behind the scenes – equally contributing to the success of The River Landing Companies.

Kristal LockabyIf you have ever met Kristal or had her as your server at the Mad Boar Restaurant, you will never forget it. It’s because she is always so lively and high spirited. Just being around her can make anyone have a great day. She has an A+ personality and the customers really like her.

Kristal has been a part of the Mad Boar team for two years. She is very efficient at her job, well liked by her peers and supervisors and has the energy of two people. She could probably do the job of two people as well.

Kristal not only has a full time job at the Mad Boar, she also has a full time job with her three children – Ginger, Sky and Jeramiah, 12, 11, and 8 respectively. She spends as much time as she can with them and volunteers with school activities and fundraisers. They all love going to area festivals and to Wrightsville Beach or Carolina Beach when they can. Kristal is also pursuing a degree in Accounting.

Congratulations to Kristal as one of the 1st Quarter Paul Burch Award recipients as she is worthy of this recognition.

“Kristal is a wonderful server. She is so personable, friendly and has the best attitude. And on top of that, she provides great service!” ~ Madi McDougald

Leslie WashingtonWhen Leslie first began her job in the banquet department, her competency in her role as a Banquet Captain was immediately recognized. She may be tough and regi-ment at times, however, this is because she has the desire to make everything perfect for the guests and her staff. Numerous, if not all banquet employees have expressed how much they respect and adore her and they follow her lead without question.

Leslie began working with the banquet department three years ago as a temp and it was evident that The River Landing Companies should hire her as a full time employee. She takes genuine pride in her work and it shows. She is one of the employees in the hospitality department that is a shining star!

Leslie, originally from Pensacola, Florida, is from a military family and she also served in the United States Army. She currently lives in Burgaw with her two beautiful children, Troy, 11 and Dominque, 14. When she is now busy with work and family duties, she enjoys X Box - Mystery Games, reading and is a movie fanatic.

Congratulations to Leslie as one of the 1st Quarter Paul Burch Award recipients and she is worthy to be recognized. “Leslie can only be classified as an ‘Unsung Hero’ in the banquet operations. She works long hard hours behind the scenes to make many of our functions look easy and seamless. She will do whatever it takes to knock it out of the park. Great employee, great teammate!” ~ Kevin Caulfield

"Improving River Landing"In the past we established Level 1, 2 and 3 to define the proper procedures for golf cart, push cart and handicap cart activity. Varying ground and weather conditions coupled with the lack of understanding the “Level System” have indicated we needed to define each specifically. Starting at the beginning of April we will no longer use the 3 Levels. You will see signage specific to Golf Carts, Handicap Carts and Push Carts defining access to the golf courses for the day. These locations will be on the podium at the cart staging area, course conditions sign as you enter the golf shop, golf shop counter and each #1 tee. If/when we change access during the day, we will do our best to notify the golfers presently on the courses.

If you utilize a Blue or Red Handicap Flag to play golf here at River Landing please know you will need to sign a flag authorization form in the golf shop agreeing to the proper driving directions. You will also need to check-in at the golf shop to pick-up your flag each time you play. We apologize for the inconvenience but we feel this will help in the handicap flag abuse and disregard in authorization of handicap flags.

I would also like to point out, when playing your round here at River Landing there are many things we see on a daily basis which go against proper eti-quette and are simply rude and disrespectful.

90° Means To Stay On The Fairways The Least You Can • We see everyone driving carts straight down the fairway • If it is the shorter distance then great but most of the times it isn’t • Golf carts parked beside tees and greens

Cart Path Only • We see most people comply on #1 and then away they go • When they are away from the clubhouse they drive in the fairways

Push Carts Are To Stay Off Of Tee And Green Complexes • We see them on fringes • We see them on tees • Yes, we have seen them on greens • We see signs turned around • They walk through the natural grass areas

For the ones who do these things correctly, thank you. For the ones who do these things incorrectly, is it because you have become lazy, ignorance or lack of integrity? Hopefully as we all improve our actions on the golf courses and driving range we will see both continue to improve.

Holes-N-OneCharlie Steinbraker captured an eagle on #3 of the River Course on March 13th of this year. He used his trusty 5-hybrid from 166 yards to snare his second career hole-n-one. Sherry Aramini made her second hole-n-one of her golfing career, the first one she was playing alone, on March 22nd. #3 of the River Course was once again the site of the perfect 6-hybrid shot from 127 yards and another eagle snared. Shift your focus to #5 on the Landing Course where not one but two eagles were captured on April 2nd of this year. Lynda Goodman captured her eagle by using an 8-iron from 108 yards. Two hours later Ed Dillard captured his eagle using a 7-iron from 154 yards. Capturing eagles at River Landing is usually a rare feat and so once again Bob McDowell went hunting for eagles in Myrtle Beach. On March 24th he used his 9-iron from 122 yards on #4 of the Myrtle Beach National’s Kings North Course to capture his eagle and the 5th in this article. Congratulations to all the successful hunters/golfers for capturing the rare hole-n-one eagle!!

RemindersGolf Shop Vendors – Please know just because you don’t see it in the golf shop doesn’t mean we can’t order it! We can compete and usually offer a better price on new product than most golf stores. Please ask a member of the golf staff for a price if you don’t see it in the golf shop.

Cigarette Butts & Trash – Please keep River Landing Green & Clean “No butts about it!” We would like to inform all smokers we do have ashtrays for golf carts so please ask the staff for one and help us keep our golf courses free of butts!!!

Safety First – Please wait for the golfers ahead of you to clear the landing area before you hit your next shot. It only takes 1 errant shot to change our com-munity, are you really impatient enough to jeopardize someone’s life. If you are, think about someone doing the same thing to your spouse, child or best friend. It’s just a game!

Golf Course Assets – Please, Please, Please return any cart towels you may have accidentally taken home or left in your trunks.

Decorative Grasses – Please do not drive golf carts or push carts through the new decorative grasses. There should never be any vehicles in the grass and there are tracks where someone has driven through. This will not be tolerated.

Back Driving Range – Please keep golf cart traffic limited to the cart path or beside the south practice tee. Our maintenance staff is trying to improve and beautify our practice area and the traffic elimination will help substantially.

Hopping Rides – Please remember it is against our rules to hitch a ride on a golf cart at any time during your round if you are walking. This unfortunately will result in both the walker and cart driver paying an additional cart fee.

Golf Cart Pairing Up – Are you one of the many groups who need 3 carts for 3 or 4 players? Please pair up when leaving the 1st Tee and make sure there are 2 riders in each cart. It is careless and adds age to our cart fleet!

Gardening CommitteeOur gardens have been hibernating a long time this winter. Too much snow, rain and cold weather to even try to get excited about the garden. However, a recent article peeked my interest and I would like to share it with you. The fol-lowing is a piece by Carole Howell that appeared in the Carolina Country Magazine (March edition). I am citing her work, her words, her ideas. I cannot take credit for any of it.

LUNAR MAGIC: Planting by the moon is no passing phase.

My aunt and uncle kept a copy of Blum’s Farmer’s and Planter’s Almanac by the phone book. They often mentioned the moon’s signs in relation to whatever they were plant-ing or harvesting. They turned to the almanac for weather forecasts as much as rely-ing on the weatherman. The first Blum’s was printed in 1828 and became popular as tobacco farmers brought their golden burley to market each October.

The study of the moon and stars to set an earthly course is not new. For thousands of years, people of many cultures and religions have studied the heavens to mark time and to plan and predict long before calendars and computer models.

Getting In Tune With The Moon. It’s really quite simple to apply the natural rhythms of the moon and stars to your gardening tasks. The moon’s 28 day journey around the earth and its gravitational pull gives us ocean tides. Tides are highest at the new moon and the full moon, when sun, earth, and moon are aligned. The passing moon that affects the ocean tides also affects the moisture of the soil during four seven-day phases. From the new moon to the full moon, the earth’s water table rises, bringing more water to the topsoil. As the full moon decreases to a new moon, pressure on root systems reduces as the water table falls. At its most basic, the almanac tracks the moon’s phases and its relation to the sun and stars to suggest the best times for certain activities. Planting during this period means that seeds and plants absorb more water. It also means that fruits harvested and eaten during this time will be at their juiciest. For the greatest benefit from fertilizer and compost, apply between the new moon and the first quarter.

If the article interests you, you can find almanacs at your local hardware or feed and seed store, bookstores, news-stands, and supermarkets.

Carole Johnson, Gardening Committee MemberThe next newsletter will contain all the new gardening activities for the coming year! Talk to you in May.

This month, we introduce a new monthly column from our neighbor and friend, Susan MacLaughlin. A certified life coach, Susan will share tips and perspective on living the lives we want. You can learn more about Susan and her work on her website at www.susanmaclaughlin.com.

Friends,

What do desktop clutter, inadequate tools for a job, a too-chatty golfing partner, and a trouble-some relationship with a friend have in common?

They’re all tolerations -- mental clutter -- the little and big things we put up with, often without realizing it, that zap our energy and drain our life force. Every time we tolerate something, we de-plete the energy we could be using to improve our performance on the golf course, relationship with a spouse, make a life change, or to simply experience joy. It’s like living with a low-grade fever or pain that somehow dulls our experience and zaps our full vitality.

When am I going to get to cleaning out the closet? Zap!

Ughhh. I wish she would just be quiet. Zap!

When my children visit, why can’t they clean up after themselves? Zap!

We get frustrated; yet hold ourselves back from doing anything about these issues. We think, “I can’t take the time to deal with this now.” Or, “That’s just the way it is.” Or, “Don’t rock the boat—play it safe.” Or, “I don’t want to complain or be too demanding.” We hold onto these limiting beliefs and convince ourselves that the issues simply aren’t that important or are beyond our control. So we tolerate. We build up mental clutter. It’s exhausting!

In my newsletter last month, I started talking about spring cleaning. Now that we’re officially into spring (and hopefully the last of the snow is behind us!), let’s clear out that mental clutter! It’s time to stop tolerating – to consciously evaluate and eliminate the tolerations standing in our way.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Appraise. Make an honest assessment of what you are tolerating in each of the areas of your life: environment, health, work/volunteer-ing, money, relationship and so on. Write down everything that annoys you or that you feel you are putting up with. You will likely come up with more than 100 of these tolerations!

Choose. Based on your values and goals, you get to choose. What will you say “No” to? “Yes?” Make sure the “yeses” really excite you. Commit to making them real!

Plan. With the support of a coach, friend or family member, develop a strategy for eliminating these tolerations. You don’t have to do it alone—in fact, it’s more fun to partner up or create a support team.

Verify. Create accountability around your goals, with specific deadlines for eliminating your tolerations. How many and which ones will you eliminate each day?

Evaluate. Examine each underlying limiting belief that has kept you putting up with these things. Again, get support to help you break through them. You may be so close to some of these beliefs that you can’t fully recognize them for what they are.

Appreciate. Take an honest look at what you are getting out of keeping things as they are. There is always some kind of payoff for what-ever is going on in your life. Who in your life—or what part of you—does not want things to change? Appreciate that person or part, and look for ways for it to be win-win for all concerned.

Request. Remember that complaints are usually unspoken requests. What requests do you need to make?

As you eliminate tolerations, you will feel the joy, increased vitality, and a sense of empowerment. And then YOU will be in the driver’s seat...and won’t that be a beautiful and worthwhile ride this spring?

Susan

Saturday, March 14th was slated to be the perfect opening day tournament and luncheon for the 122 ladies who signed up for lunch and 93 for golf – until the rains moved in that morning and cancelled the golf portion of the big event. But, that did not keep the ladies from enjoying each other’s company and a lovely lunch prepared by Chef Solomon and his staff.

Although there were no awards for closest to the pin, the longest drive, or low gross/low net winners from Flights 1 and 2, there was one housekeeping matter addressed: due to a scoring error, which has been corrected, the winner for most im-proved golfer in 2014 was awarded to Pam Reinhardt. Congratulations Pam!

The RLGALS were fortunate to have a guest speaker join them for lunch – Jennifer Bowman, from the UNC Lineberger Com-prehensive Cancer Center. Jennifer made the trip from Chapel Hill to thank the RLGALS for their past Swing for the Cure fundraisers which has raised $54,457.63 since 2013 when an endowment fund was established. The total donated to UNC Lineberger from 2008 through 2014 is $67,278. The endowment fund supports the Seed Grant Program which makes funds available for breast cancer research. Since there are many new members in RLGALS, Jennifer answered many frequently asked questions about the fund and how it is administered, such as: 1) what percentage of the RLGALS’ donation goes toward overhead costs? (answer: none – administrative salaries, etc. are paid by UNC Lineberger); 2) is all of the RLGALS’ money used each year? (answer: no, the seed grant is set up as an endowment fund and only a portion of the interest earned each year is applied toward grants; and, 3) if no breast cancer seed grants are awarded in a grant cycle, are the funds used to support other projects? (answer: no, RLGALS funds can only be applied to breast cancer research projects). Jennifer urged the RLGALS to continue their association with UNC Lineberger and consider increasing their pledge in the coming years.

I would like to thank the members for their participation in our opening day luncheon and the volunteers who worked at the registration desk: Geri Cullen, Christy Wintrode, Kathy Nemeth, and Judy Sayko. Although golf was not played, the members still purchased mulligans which will accumulate and benefit a local charity at the end of the year, Backpack Buddies. And, thanks to JoAnn Booz who produced our annual booklet full of information about members, by-laws, games and calendar of events. JoAnn also spoke at the luncheon about the annual Invitational to be held on May 28th of this year and encouraged everyone to invite friends from other clubs to participate in this event with the theme of “Around the World in 18 Holes.”

I also appreciated Elaine Masinick taking the lead in organizing the first Fun Friday game and getting the members excited about participating in this weekly fun event.

Thanks for your support – don’t forget to sign up for weekly play days and Fun Fridays.

Spring is here! The River Landing Men’s Golf Association (RLMGA) began the 2015 season with a Breakfast Shamble on March 21th. Rain and cold caused the event to be rescheduled from March 7th. The Play Days kicked off on Tuesday (March 10th) and Thursday (March 12th). On Tuesday (March 10th) 53 players competed with 22 winners (42%), and on Thursday (March 12th) 34 players com-peted with 14 winners (41%). So remember you can’t win if you don’t play. The first away trip has been scheduled for March 31st with others to follow. This first away trip is to the MUNI (Municipal) Golf Course in Wilmington. It will be a 9 AM Shotgun Start and the cost is $35 including cart.

The RLMGA is constantly striving to make the golf experience for its members enjoyable, rewarding, and at the highest quality level. To accomplish that, here are some additional actions being taken:

• There will be two Golf Clinics. They will be April 8th and May 11th (10:30 – 11:15). We usually get 20 to 40 wanting to sign up and each session will handle 15. There will be a $5 charge for the clinic participant. Keep a lookout for when sign-up can begin at either the Pro Shop or on the RLMGA Website (www.rlmga.info)• For new members to RLMGA the Board is assigning a buddy for each new member. The buddy will assist in making the transi-tion easy, aiding with such items as WebRes, GHIN, who’s who, how we address pace of play, accuracy in scoring, etc. We have added 16 new players this year.• We are working to aid all in understanding Rule 14-1b - “Anchoring the Club” – which goes in effect 2016.

As we progress through the season we will include pictures of all our RLMGA board members for easy recognition. This month let me introduce you to the key leaders:

When you see Paul and/or Dave say Hi and let them know how RLMGA is doing.

To all, welcome to RLMGA’s 2015 season. Come and join us as the adventure continues.

See you on the course,

Gary Wintrode

RMGA Secretary

From Clubhouse DiningHello All,

I want to start by saying many thanks to all that attended the cooking class recently. It is truly satisfying to us when we we are able to put on such events, and have a great turn out, never mind a sell out! I hope ev-eryone has enjoyed the twist with the last couple of cooking classes, re-ceiving a mortar & pestle to master the traditional making of pesto and now your own tortilla press. Keep coming to these classes your mortar & pestle will make great guacamole These are simple kitchen tools that you will find many uses for. All of you that attended this previous class, I am sure that you thanked the chef, but you are forgetting someone.

Please take a moment to thank Merry Partin the next time that you see her. She worked really hard on getting the room ready after the previous event on Monday. As you can see there are a lot of little details that go in to the preparation for theses classes. Every tiny detail needs to be thought out & executed ahead of time so that everyone has everything that the need & Merry did an awesome job pulling it all together!!!

We will discuss some seasonal beverages next article, some fun warm weather cocktails & other libations. I will also sneak in a recipe for cocktail hour, easy entertaining, or I just want to sit home have a glass of wine and a bite!!!

Cheers !Peter Panagakos
