Cuero ISD Library News November is Picture Book Month CHS honor students partner with first Cuero High School NHS juniors and seniors visited Hunt Elementary Library on two different Wednesdays to assist first grade students with taking their very first Accelerated Reader quiz. First graders were in awe of the high school leaders, many of whom are varsity football players, Trotters, cheerleaders, band members, student council representatives, and Gobbler trainers. Sixteen senior NHS members and twenty-six junior NHS members participated in this event. Books, books, and more books! New titles arrive at junior high library This year’s addition of the sixth grade to the junior high campus means more books are needed in the junior high collection. Over three hundred new titles arrived in October. New biographies include the following: Meet Josh Hamilton, Nolan Ryan, Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio, Ted Kennedy, Snoop Dog, Clara Barton, Stephanie Meyer, Sojourner Truth, Queen Victoria, Wayne Gretzky, Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos, Steven Spielberg, and many more. Never a dull moment at Cuero Intermediate campus Reading Is Fun RIF book distribution at JCF & Hunt Many thanks to Cuero National Bank (Branch of First National Bank of Shiner) for being our first Reading Is Fundamental book sponsor. Students at John C. French and Hunt Elementary each selected a book from hundreds of donated titles. Thank you to Mrs. Ruby Rodriguez and Mrs. Kelly Blackwell for coordinating the event. Dec. 2 thru Fri. JCF students earn spirit John C. French pre-k and K students earn spirit sticks each six weeks in the Home Reading Program. Students take home their RED (Read Every Day) folder, and parents list the titles they read to their child on the reading log. To earn a spirit stick, Pre-K students must read at least 5 titles per six weeks, and Kindergarten students must read at least 10 titles. Students who Book clubs are big hits The 3rd grade Book Gobblers book club meets every Monday with Mrs. Haley at noon to book talk and eat lunch together. They are currently reading Because of Winn Dixie. The 5 th grade Literary Ladies meet every other Thursday at noon; they are reading The Lions of Little Rock, a historical fiction novel set in 1958 Little Rock, AR, one year after the Little Nine. The 5 th grade Real Men Read are currently reading Perfect Game; they meet on Brian Burns to perform for Cuero 7 th graders FALL 2015 CIS students have fun learning and creating with their iPads every Thursday in the library. During one lesson, Mrs. G demonstrated to students how to use the Chatterpix for Kids app. Students selected a short biography and skimmed the book for facts. Then they listed those facts on their paper to use as their script. Next, they took a photo of their book and uploaded it into the Chatterpix App. Then they recorded themselves as they read their script of facts. They could also add accessories, background, etc. to their photo. The example shown above of Alexander Hamilton is just the picture. The end result is actually a short movie (mouth moves in Chatterpix). It was so much fun! Mrs. G also has a QR code activity for students to use to learn about the Regions of Texas. Students read the question, use their iPad to scan the QR code, and follow the link to find the answers. During the week at Halloween, Mrs. G showed students the eGourd app, and they designed their own carved pumpkin! Miller was named as 2014 Library Journal Mover and Shaker. Texas singer and songwriter, Brian Burns will present his Once Upon a Time in Texas program for CJH 7 th graders on Thursday, Dec. 3, in the Competition gym. Burns does as many as 300 performances a year at concert venues, theaters, music festivals, and schools; he was recently awarded The Daughters of The American Revolution Texas State Media Award for Excellence in Education for Once Upon A Time In Texas. From his website: Once Upon A Time In Texas is a multiple award-winning live concert presentation that reinforces your students' Texas history curriculum with songs, stories, and interactive dialog. The history of a people is best illuminated through its music, and nothing ignites a student's historical interest like songs and stories that bring the past stirringly back to life. Read as many books as you want, and enter as many times as you like. 10 winners will be drawn on Dec. 17 to receive gift cards to local businesses. Caroline B.
