|ortrrj.THE TIDEOP DEATH.
BT HOX. ROBERT M. CHAELTOK.
The tide rolls on, the tide rolls on.The never-censing tide,
That sweeps the plewure from our hearts,The loved ones from our aide—
That brings afflictions to our lot,And anguish and despair,
And bears from Youth's unruffled browThe charms that lingered there.
The tide rolls on; wave after waveIts swelling waters flow ;
Before itall is bright and fair;Behind it all is woe!
The infant from ita mother's breast,The gay and blooming bride,
Are swept away and borne alongBy that resistless tide.
The tide rolls on ; the soldier’s eyeGrows dim beneath its swell;
The scholar shuns the mystic loreThat he hath loved so well;
The monarch puts the crown aside,And Labor’s weary slave
Rejoices that his limbs willknowThe quiet of the grave.
The tide rolls on ; like summer brook,It glideth to the sad;
But, like dark winter's angry tide.It rusheth to the glad.
From kingly hall and lowly cot,From battle-field and hearth.It sweeps into oblivion’s sea
The dwellers on the earth.
801 l on, thou dark and turbid wave!Thou can 1st not bear away
The record of the good and brave,That knoweth not decay ;
Though fierce may rush thy billow’s strife,Though deep thy current be,
Still faith shall lift thy beacon high,And guide us through thy sea.
The Declaration of Independence.WBM, HOW AU WHERE WAS IT WRITTEE?
There is much of intercut in the abovequestiuu from one of your correspondents,in the Obterter of the 14th, and howmuch easier it ia to ask than to answer.There ia nothing left na but to gatherwhat we cau from the records and troditiouaof tlic men of that day, who were in thatCongress, and especially from the immortalcommittee who were assigned to draw upthe wonderful paper. It is wellknown thatthe committee were as they were named,Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Bepja-mio Franklin, Roger Sherman and RobertK. Livingston. John Adams says in hisAutobiography. “The committee hadseveral meetings in which were proposedthe articles of which the Declaration wasto consist, and minutes were made of them.The committee then appointed Mr. Jeffer-son and me to draw them up in form, andclothe them in a proper dreas. The sub-committee met and considered the minutes,making such observations on them asoccurred:" He goes on to say that Jefftr-son desired him to make the draft whichhe declined for several reasons, the lastof which ia, “I had a great opinion of theelegance of his pen, and none at all of myown.” In a letter to Timothy Pickering,dated the 6th of August, 18:12. as to theorigin of the Declaration of Independence,he expressed the same recollections, andsays that Jefferson said, “Well, ifyou aredecided, t will do as well os I can andhe replied, “Very well, when yon havedrawn it up, we will have a meeting."He goes on:—“A meeting we accordinglyhad, and conned the paper over. I wasdelighted with ita high tone and theflights of oratory with which it abounded,especially that concerning negro slavery,which, though I knew his Southernbretbern would never suffer to pass inCongress, I certainly never would oppose.There were other expressions which Iwould not have inserted, if 1 had drawn itup, particularly that which called theKing tyrant I thought this too personal,for I never believed George to be a tyrantin disposition and in nature; I alwaysbelieved him tobe deceived by his courtierson both sides of the Atlantic, and in bisofficial capacity only, cruel. I thoughtthe expression too passionate, tod toomuch like aeoldiug, for so grave mud
| solemn a document, but as Franklin andSherman were to inspect it afterward, Ithought it would not become me to strikeit out. 1 consented to report it, and donot now remember that 1 made or sug-gested a single alteration. We reportedit to the committee of five. It was read,and I do not remember that Franklin or
Sherman criticised anything. We were' all in baste, Congress was impatient, and
the instrument was reported, as Ibelieve,in Jefferson's handwriting, as he first drewit. Congress cut off about a quarter ofit,aa I expected they would, but they oblit-erated some of the best of it, and left allthat was objectionable, if anything in itwaa. 1 have long wondered that theoriginal draft has not been published. Isuppose the reason is the vehement philip-pic against negro slavery." Benson J.Leasing in his Lives of these Signers, givesthe original draft, and this letter to Rich-ard Henry Lee, four days after.
Philadelphia, July 8, 1776.**Dear Sis :—For news, I refer yon toyour
brother, who writes on that head. I encloseyou a copy of the Declaration of Indepen-dence, as agreed to by the House, and also aaoriginally framed jyon will judge whether itis the better or the worse for the critics. 1shall return to Virginia after the 11th ofAugust. I wish my successor may be certainto come before that time; in that case, Ishall hope to see you, and not Wythe, inconvention, that the business of Government,which is of everlasting concern, may recaiveyour aid. Adieu, and believe me to be,
Your friend and servant,Thomas Jefferson.
To Richard Henry Leo, Esq.”Webster, inhis discourse on the Lives
and Services of John Adams and ThomasJefferson, talks ia this wise ¦ —“The meritof this paper is Mr. Jefferson's. Somechanges were made in it at the suggestionof other members of the committee, andethers by Congress, while it was underdiscussion. But none of them altered thetone, the fritme, the arrangement, or thegeneral character of the instrument. Asa composition, the Declaration ia Mr.Jefferson's. It ia the production of his
1 mind, and the high honor of it belongs tohim clearly and absolutely. To say thatho performed his great work well, wouldbo doing him injustice. To aay that hedid excellently well, admirably well, wouldbe inadequate and halting praise. Let usrather say, that he so discharged the dutyassigned him, that all Americana may wellrejoice that the work of drawing the title
' deed of their liberties devolved open him."Everett talks in the some strain npon a
\ like occasion:—“This trust devolved oni Jefferson, and with if rests on him the' imperishable renown of having penned the' Declaration of Independence. To haveI been the instrument of expresaimr & one
brief, decisive set, the concentrated willand resolution of a whole family of States;of unfolding, hi one all-important mani-festo, the causes, the motives, and the
—or, rather, let me aay, already elevated—to an importance, in the estimation ofmany, equal to anything human everborne on prachinent, or expressed in thevisible signs of thought, this is the jrle;yof Thomas Jefferson.”
3
Loosing, in his introduction to his“Lives of the Signers," say- a few verbalalterations were mode by Adams and Dr.Franklin, and that it was submitted toCongress on the 28th day of June. Onthe 7th of June, Richard Henry Lee madethe great move for independence, byoffering his celebrated resolution, whichwas incorporated in the instrument;—“Resolved, That these United colonies are,and of right ought to bq, free and inde-pendent States; that they are absolvedfrom all allegiance to British Crown ;and that all political cmnectiou betweenthem and the State of Great Britain is,and ought to bo, totally dissolved."
On the 11th of June the committee wasappointed. The time “ic/ien” lies, then,between the 11th and the 28th. Therehaving been, according to John Adams,“several meetings o' the committee,” andone or more meetings of the Hub-commit-tee (Jefferson and himm|f.) The instru-ment must have within thespace of two weeks, and probably withinone. We have aeen “how" itwas drawn.The ideas are not original, bid -were longthe expression of the public mlfid, whichwere then to take a more positive shape,and were to become the language of theColonies united as separate States. Thegrouping, or as Webster has it, “the com-position," was Jefferson’s. His was thestyle—the rhetoric.
As to the place "where." Jeffersonsaid to Webster and Mr. and Mrs.Tiekuor,when they visited him in 1824, “in replyto a question of Mr. Webster's”;—“TheDeclaration of Independence was writtenin a house on the north side of Chestnutstreet, between Third and Fourth—not acorner house. Heiskell's Tavern, inFourth street, has been shown for it, hutthis is not the house,” This, in brief, iswhat we And as to that most eloquentStale paper; bearing upon the questionsasked by yourcorrespondent, lying scatteredthrough revolutionary history and tradi-tion. It were well in these centennialdays to revive all that is known of thoseliberty-loving men who gave birth to afree government, baaed upon the will ofthe people, and teach their virtues to therising youth, who may have much to dowith our history aa a nation at the end ofan other hundred years. —Gorretpoudrnt"f the New York (Jhterver.
ORCHARDS.The best fruit—the cleanest, best grown
i and least deformed fruit—l have seen isthat grown in orchards in which pigs orsheep hare been permitted to range for a•cries of years up to the time the fruitreally begins to mature and drop. It isastonishing what a difference it makes inthe aggregate amount of perfect specimensof apples, pe&n and plums that bang onthe trees. They destroy innumerable in-sects. Those who admit the pigs to theorchards ring or rim their noses. Theydo not allow them to break the sod byrooting. Thus, they make them watchfulof every larva and insect which appears on
, the surface, and compel them to eat theI stung fruit which drops from the trees in
the early part of the season.Sheep are more dangerous in an orchard
than swine. They are more liable to gnawthe bark from the trees —especially ifyoung, and the pasturage is short. But
> as a rule, there is little damage done.Here is one man who has kept thirty hand-some South-Downs in his orchard this sea-son, and not a tree is injured; nor can youfind an apple on the ground after 10 o'el'kin the morning, unless you happen to beunder the tree about the time it drape.
No orchard that I have seen, however,surpasses one in which no live stock has
i been kept other than poultry—hens, geese,i turkeys, guinea and pea fowl. Here is an
- extensive range, inclosed by a high picketi fence. The trees are mulched and manur-
ed every year—sometimes in fall and> sometimes in spring. Turkeys roost i> the trees; to do the other fowls. The
1 geese have a pond fed by a brook in whichto bathe. Allthe fowls are kept in thisorchard that can be withprofit The cropof fruit is bountiful and beautiful. Theabundance is due to care in pruning, wash-ing and feeding. Its beauty and perfect-ness is largely attributed by the owner tothe vigilance of the fowls in hunting in-sects snd destroying them. Tile profitsfrom the fowls are large. It is claimedthat they are the most productive and prof-itable live stock he has, •in proportion tothe investment. Eggs, chickens snd tur-keys alwtys bring a good price; and therange he gives them and the comparativefreedom, diminishes the amount of carerequired and the per cent, of loss frontdisease that ordinarily obtains where fowlare closely confined. Really, the orchard,with its fruit and poultry products, isregarded the most profitable portion of hisinvestment in proportion to the expenseinvolved in its care.
Utilizing the Buffalo.—Home-steaders, and other settlers of small meansin western Kansas, derive considerableprofit from the buffalo. The moat saltedand dried, is used in families nr sold intowns. The skins are in good demand, asthey are now not only used forrobes, butare tanned fur leather. Some of the long-est hair is manufactured into mattresses,while the shorter hair is used in mortarfor plastering purposes. A large businessis also done is collecting buffalo bones,which are sent to the cast to be groundup or manufactured into bone phosphates.Several hundred car loads have been sent
( east over this road the present season, aud' vast quantities are piled np at nearly every
station awaiting shipment. Tbo avenge| price paid for these bones at the station is
$5 per ton.
