Some things mean a lot!Just yesterday, May 19, in the service, I was recalling a song that most of you will remember
as one that came from the film “Calamity Jane”, where she sings: “I just blew in from the windy city.” My thoughts then turned to the many songs and tunes that mean a lot to me.
I’m pretty sure that you will have some personal favourites as well that perhaps remind you of an occasion, a place or even maybe a person – a time in your life when something special happened and the song or tune reminds you of that time.
When you think back to the old Hymn books and remember the Hymns that were dropped from the Hymn Book CH3 and then again some that were excluded from the newest Hymn book CH4, it seems a shame when Hymns that were loved by so many people have been dis-carded along the way.
Authors over the centuries have penned some wonderful words that have been put to beauti-ful music and were all part of our worship for many years. Now what could we do to revive the memories that we have attached to these Hymns?
Personally I think what we could do is to have a Sunday, perhaps towards the end of August, when we could have a service devoted to some of those special Hymns.
Over the next couple of months we will have forms available so that you can select three of your favourites and then some very discerning person will select a number of the popular ones and we will have a service of Hymn singing either at the end of August or the beginning of September.
I do hope that you will put forward your favourite Hymns as this will allow us to have a great service of praise where we can really sing to the glory of God in both of our churches.
Have a great summer and, with a bit of luck, enjoy the good weather.May God be with you in all that you seek to do. Your Interim Moderator
Colin

Christian AidYou will recall from last month that the theme of Christian Aid week, from May 12-18, was “Bite back the hunger” – the money collected will be directed to alleviating world hunger.
We have carried out house to house collecting in our parish with 30 people being involved in all as-pects of collecting – distributing envelopes, collecting filled envelopes, counting etc - and give thanks for them, and for all who contributed to the wonderful sum, which to date has realised £1858.72.

Buzz updateOn Monday April 22, Janette introduced Kate and Mixed Bag. They are a group who do a lot of entertaining, with Kate on keyboard and many instruments for us all to try out.
We heard a variety of songs, from Hymns to Burns and a number of fun songs – it was a happy afternoon, followed by tea.
We have now begun our new syllabus from May to October, with a very good programme. All are welcome to our meetings.
We began on May 6, when Janet chaired the meeting, with the title: “What is this?” We had 30 different objects on display and had to guess what they were.
It was good fun with a winner and indeed a boobyprize, and was followed by tea.

From the Guild
Our pictures show some of the St Mary’s-Greyfriars’ Guild members who took part in the Dumfries Presbyterial Council 125th anniversary celebration of The Guild in Easterbrook Hall. Around 200 members were present and the afternoon featured a fashion show by Livingston’s of Castle Douglas, when the models paraded – informally – between the tables giving the ladies a good close up view!
Let’s Celebrate (Songs of Praise) in Dumfries Northwest Church is taking place at 7.30pm on June 5.
The Guild summer outing is to be on Tuesday 18th June to the Chariots of Fire – Riding for the Disabled – at Boreland. This is an evening visit arriving there at 6.30pm. Names please to Janette Kirkpatrick (253456) by June 10 so that transport arrangements can be made.

Human rights reportThe Church and Society Council called for a refreshed approach to human rights in a report
from presented to the General Assembly. The report suggests that there needs to be a new approach to human rights, moving away
from a recent focus on court battles and focusing instead on something that is not defined or decided by law courts but based on the “Golden rule” of doing to our neighbour what we would want done to us.
Rev Sally Foster-Fulton, convener of the Church and Society Council, said: “The report on human rights is framed, not as a repetition of the tired and desiccated debate about equality laws, but instead is our heartfelt response to the question ‘what does God require of us’ as a reflection on the call to a love-inspired justice.
“This new approach should be neighbour based; that in caring for the rights of our neigh-bours, loving not just our neighbour but the stranger and even our enemy. In doing so our own rights will also be upheld.
“Human rights are not commodities that exist separate to responsibilities to our neighbour to be used for our own ends. Our neighbour includes those we have not met as well as those physically beside us. We are part of a global community, inextricably interconnected with one another. Human beings exist and are at their best, not in an autonomous bubble that much of our consumer-driven culture would have us believe, but in real community and real relation-ships. We are put here for one another. If we are not to be our brother and sister’s keeper, friend, confidante, then who is?”

PS …5 Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.6 He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I shall not be shaken.7 My salvation and my honour depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge.8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.

In the gardenAn evening visit by members on May 1 to Garden Wise on Castle Douglas Road proved to be a big success, as our host Alistair Bertram went to great pains to educate and certainly stimulate as he imparted his knowledge of indoor and outdoor plants. It was all delivered with a sense of fun, as gar-dening should be! Refreshment was provided and the church group donated £90.50 to Carsethorn R ’n’ R, which was Alistair’s chosen charity. A vote of thanks was delivered by convener Stan Tanner.
The outing on May 15 to Conheath Nursery near Glencaple was most interesting, and the scale of area and greenhouse was surprisingly large. Our hosts Bill and Susan made us feel most wel-come, and shelter was available when the hailstones descended! The visit was rounded off with en-joyable afternoon tea and social interaction at the picturesque Glencaple harbour. We anticipate our summer outing on June 19, which will round off a successful season for the members.
