I came to Australia in 2013 with not much more than a suitcase, the concept of SpeedFit and a plan to making these 20-minute workouts available to every Australian. In Europe, EMS studios have been thriving for the last fi ve years, with over 5000 studios in operation.Joining me was my friend and SpeedFit co-founder, Roland Safar. Our mission was clear: your fi tness regime shouldn’t take over your life, but fi t into it. Together, we were keen to challenge the traditional gym ethos by combining personal training with EMS technology in one short session, performed in private, fully equipped studios. SpeedFit is not just another fad: created by medical and sports professionals, EMS training has been backed by scientists for decades. And although SpeedFit is a unique fi tness experience, it’s also a lifestyle; it’s about being economical with your time so you can get more out of life. Introducing SpeedFit to Australia has been an amazing ride, and not without its challenges. Put it this way: if we had a dollar for everyone that said a 20-minute workout was not possible..! (But fortunately, the results soon quietened the naysayers.)

We opened our fi rst SpeedFit studio in Northbridge. With enthusiasm, determination, endless caffeine – and support from our spouses – we managed to talk people through the door and try our work-out. Luckily, people liked it. Word spread. More people signed up.Before we knew it, Channel 7’s Today Tonight was knocking on our door; we were on TV and suddenly, hours of hard work seemingly morphed into an “overnight success”! We soon launched our Claremont studio which helped absorb some of the endless demand. But it wasn’t enough.In June 2016, backed by investors, we launched three new studios over a space of three days. (Hey, we were green keen!) All studios were break-even in less than ten weeks. Today, we have more studios opening in Perth and the East Coast, and we’re just about to launch our franchise system. We hope you enjoy the magazine. It’s full of info on EMS, scientifi c research, great dietary tips and inspiring client stories. It’s all part of the SpeedFit lifestyle - a lifestyle we hope you enjoy embracing.

Q: How did you hear about SpeedFit?

A: My husband watched the Channel 7 story on SpeedFit last September. Straight after, he told me about it and I rang SpeedFit immediately to book an appointment. I had to wait a while before I could get in, but I would have gone straight in that minute if I could!

Q: What motivated you to start SpeedFit?

A: I’ve suffered from joint and muscle pain for eight years. My weight has gone from 69 kg to 97 kg. Some days I was still able to go for a walk; however, most days I couldn’t as I was in too much pain. As time passed by, my walking sessions became less frequent, and I became slower and slower. After we had discovered SpeedFit on TV, I was amazed that you could do a 20-minute workout without having to sweat it out in a gym for four hours. The fact that I could exercise 90% of my muscles in that time also attracted me.I’d wanted to try SpeedFit because I wanted to lose weight, get fi t again, become free of pain, have fun and to be honest, I wanted to see results fast!

When I started with SpeedFit I was thrilled to discover that I could work out, free of pain. It was fun and not hard to do. Having a trainer support me for my 20-minute workout was a great way to get me going. I realised that there was nothing to worry about and in fact, I could do more than I thought. It improved my confi dence, which was at an all-time low.My primary goal was to lose weight and get some fi tness back;

I would have been happy to get back to 85 kg. As of today (Jan, 2015), I’m 78.5 kg. Having already smashed my primary goal, I decided I’d like to get back to 69 kg and get back into my favourite black evening dress!I’d also like to continue to live a pain-free life and never take pain relief medication again. To move freely without pain would be wonderful. This July I’m going on a trip to Italy, and I’m so excited at the thought of running around Rome with the energy and stamina I had when I was 30. What else? I’d like to get my abs back! Oh, and to do a long-distance swim for charity would be fabulous.

Q: What was your fi rst experience at SpeedFit like?

A: I was nervous about going to SpeedFit for the fi rst time. I had talked to Roland over the phone about my health issues, and he told me it wouldn’t be a problem. He said I could take it easy and just sit in the beanbag with the EMS attached to me for my fi rst two sessions if I wanted until my body started to get used to the treatment. He also told me that due to the increased circulation, SpeedFit could help me with my tendinitis and bursitis. I was keen to get started!When I walked in the door for the fi rst time I was impressed by the friendly, clean and calm environment I was in. SpeedFit is also child-friendly, which is handy as I often look after my grandson. I was not rushed, and everything was explained to me, which I appreciated. I felt listened to and taken care of. I loved that I was encouraged from day one to do just that little bit more.

You’re totally in control over how high the EMS machine goes, which is great. At the end of the fi rst session I wanted to do it all again because I was so amazed at how easy it was – and it was fun! Q: What results have you experienced from SpeedFit so far?

A: The most notable results have been my drastic weight loss. When I started in September 2014 I weighed 97 kg. Four months later I have lost 19 kg of body weight (but displaced 22kg of FAT), and I have so much more energy. I can honestly say I feel 20 years younger. When I wake up in the mornings I feel alive. Waking up feeling great is such a big deal for me, because in the past and wake up feeling like I barely slept. My body would hurt all over. Now, I jump out of bed feeling terrifi c. I have no more pain, and I’m ready to get on and enjoy my day.

I cannot get over how in just four short months even my skin feels different: smoother and with less cellulite. I can see my knees again! My legs have more muscles and less fat; my bat-wings have nearly gone, and I can fi nally see muscles in my arms again. I have no rolls of fat on my back. It’s so good to rediscover my fi tter body that’s been secretly hiding for all this time!

IN MEDIA FAQWhat should I expect after my fi rst session?

Your muscles have just undergone an intense workout using a powerful combination of EMS and SpeedFit’s exercise program. As with most workouts, training causes micro tears in your muscle fi bres and your body has to repair itself. Once the repair is complete, it will start to build musc-le. This will only happen if suffi cient time to rest is given – a minimum of 48-72 hours is recommended. We recommend you avoid high-intensity training (especially weights) during this period as that would inhibit the re-pair process. Instead, we recommend low-intensity cardio training or stret-ching, such swimming, cycling and walking. It is common for people to experience muscle soreness, similar to what you experience after intense weights training. This generally kicks in around 24 hours after the workout and peaks at about 48 hours after the workout.

When should I book my next session?

We recommend you allow a minimum of 48-72 hours between your sessi-ons. Only one session per week is suffi cient for majority of people. For people wanting to accelerate their progress or those who don’t do any other activity outside of SpeedFit, adding an extra metabolism/cellulite session per week may be benefi cial. Please consult with one of our team to see if this is suitable for you. If you experience higher than normal musc-le soreness – delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) – we recommend you take magnesium tablets or multi-vitamin tablets to aid your recovery.

If you want to lose weight and build muscle fast, you should learn about the benefits of EMS before you decide.

EMS requires less time for similar results

Timing plays an important role in HIIT. Most classes require about 15 minutes of activity, with many reaching up to 30 minutes long. Intense workouts that last longer than 30 minutes can be troublesome though, as the likelihood of injury increases. But generally, HIIT is known for promoting a short sharp burst of a workout.

EMS classes require a similar time commitment individually, although you only need one session per week for the same results. At SpeedFit, classes are always only 20 minutes. This short time makes it very easy for busy people to stay in shape and improve their health.

Similar results, backed by research

A study lead by Wolfgang Kemmler at Friedrich-Alexander’s Institute of Medical Physics found that EMS provides remarkably similar results as HIIT.

The researchers started their study with the assumption that HIIT would offer the most time-efficient method of producing muscle mass and strength. After working with volunteers for 16 weeks, though, they discovered that EMS created similar results as HIIT.

In some tests, the researchers found that volunteers who participated in EMS classes actually got better results than

those who took HIIT classes. EMS volunteers, for instance, had greater isometric back extension strength than volunteers enrolled in HIIT.Volunteers in the EMS classes also saw reductions in body fat mass, which suggests that EMS can help exercisers burn calories and shed unwanted pounds quickly.

talent,” according to ESPN’s Benzema player profile.

How should I prepare for my next session?

Preparing for your second and further sessions is the same as the fi rst one.

1. Your last meal should be eaten 2-3 hours before training so you have suffi cient energy for the workout.

2. Try to drink at least 300ml water about 30-45 minutes before the training session to ensure you are suffi ciently hydrated (or drink our pre-workout electrolyte drink for fast hydration).

3. Arrive 10 minutes before your booking time to allow time to change and get ready.

Can I do more than one session a week?

Yes, you can fast-track your progress by adding a cardio training session onto your weekly strength training. These sessions use a different kind of stimulation, which provides a constant current of low-frequency stimulation. You will feel the difference straight away – it is a slow but continuous pulse that keeps your muscles working non-stop for the full 20-minute session.

Through short, single pulses, this program has a strong impact and enhances the muscles metabolic qualities. Training Coach with over six years’ experience. Plus, he’s an Australian Lacrosse athlete. And luckily for us, he loves to share his knowledge with others when teaching!Afi q is a strong advocate for achieving a balanced lifestyle for a better quality of life and improving your goals.
