Keeping Children Healthy For The School Year Ahead

Kids from Our Lady of Guadalupe elementary school just wrapped up their Bodies in Motion summer camp provided by the CHRISTUS School-based Clinics program.

Since 1997, CHRISTUS School-based Clinics have been providing on-campus care to children attending schools in Houston’s under-served neighborhoods. Today, the program positively impacts 16 schools near the inner city and in communities south of Houston, including Dickinson, Bacliff and Bay Shores. With a new school year in full swing, CHRISTUS nurse practitioners leading the School-based Clinics program have undertaken a number of initiatives designed to promote better health for kids and their families. CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Clinic Poised for Expansion

More Than Scraped ElbowsThe seeds for program growth were planted this summer, in a number of fun health-related camps directed by CHRISTUS nurse practitioners. Children were invited to learn the benefits of nutrition, exercise and good hygiene in a energized environment. CHRISTUS School-based Clinics are also taking a leading role in helping families manage asthma. Working in accord with the American Lung Association’s Enhancing Asthma Care Program, CHRISTUS nurse practitioners help students and parents better understand “asthma basics” and the use of asthma medication.

As the school year progresses, CHRISTUS School-based Clinics will expand on-campus services to welcome mental health assistance, in partnership with Catholic Charities. On-site counselors will help students deal with academic stress, peer pressure, bullying and problems at home. Additionally, CHRISTUS School-based Clinics will pursue ongoing efficiencies in electronic record keeping, telemedicine and provision of on-campus medical assistance every school day. Help our School-based Clinics keep their momentum in the new school year, make a donation at CHRISTUSFoundation.org

CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Clinic provides primary healthcare for low-income patients. Directed by Sister Rosanne Popp, M.D., the Clinic delivers compassionate, expert treatment, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.

This fall, CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Clinic, located on Houston’s southeast side, looks to double in physical size and its capacity to serve a community in need of quality healthcare.

This expansion is possible thanks in large part to the CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Challenge funding initiative. An anonymous benefactor of St. Mary’s Clinic pledged $150,000 toward the expansion of St. Mary’s Clinic in the formof a challenge grant. The grant challenges CHRISTUS Foundation to raise $300,000 in additional funds for St. Mary’s Clinic.

By meeting CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Challenge and expanding the Clinic, an estimated 14,000 low-income patients per year will receive the necessary healthcare that would otherwise be out of reach for them. To donate to CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Challenge, visit CHRISTUSFoundation.org.

Dr. Ernest D. Cronin and the Operation San José Mission team will be traveling to Armenia, Colombia from January 17 through 26, 2014. The team will call the Clinic of the Sacred Family in Armenia Hospital home for week, as they make use of the hospital’s surgical areas to provide care to children born with cleft lip and cleft palate facial anomalies. Children’s lives are forever changed because of generous supporters to the Operation San José Mission. To donate to Operation San José and the Cronin & Brauer Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic, visit CHRISTUSFoundation.org.

The wheels of the first Mobile Clinic began rolling on Houston’s streets nearly 22 years ago. Today, two Mobile Clinic vehicles provide care to as many as 19,000 people annually. These traveling clinic-on-wheels visit more than 300 locations in areas all across greater Houston delivering high-quality healthcare to all ages, all races, and without regard to a patient’s ability to pay.

For the last few years Tye, age 18, had been a ward of Children’s Protective Services. Hoping to start a new life, he made his way to Galveston where he had family. Unfortunately, this plan did not work out as Tye had hoped and he found himself homeless. Word of mouth led Tye to CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread for a hot meal. Speaking with an Our Daily Bread counselor, Tye shared his wish to get back in high school and complete his senior year. Much to his delight, with help from CHRISTUS Our Daily

Bread, he’s doing just that and more. Tye is now residing at a family shelter where he has his own efficiency apartment, and working toward to getting his diploma. Founded in 1986 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread provides support services to homeless men and women. While upholding the dignity of each person, staff members give guidance and structure to help break the cycle of homelessness. To help support Our Daily Bread, visit CHRISTUSFoundation.org.

Corporate PartnersCHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare is incredibly grateful and truly blessed to join forces with generous companies who represent the best of our community. Companies joining the CHRISTUS Corporate Partners program have been instrumental in generating donations, lending their hands to building gardens at the school-based clinics, feeding the homeless at Our Daily Bread, hosting golf tournaments, stuffing wellness bags for the Mobile Clinic, initiating clothing and food drives during the holidays, and teaching nutrition classes for the first ever School-Based Clinic’s Nutrition Fair.

CHRISTUS Foundation board member and corporate partner, Richard R. Torres of Wells Fargo, presents Foundation president, Les Cave with a generous $25,000 check to support the vital CHRISTUS Foundation community programs .

Recently, CHRISTUS Health announced that it had entered into anagreement with Houston Methodist to develop a partnership for the ongoingoperation of CHRISTUS St. John Hospital, CHRISTUS St. Catherine Hospitaland CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation for Cancer Research.

I want to clarify that this partnership does not include CHRISTUSFoundation for HealthCare nor any of our programs. We have cared forHouston's most vulnerable residents for nearly 50 years, and our work inthe community will continue.

In fact, the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, our sponsors, have renewed their commitment to CHRISTUS Foundation forHealthCare and plan to work closely with us to expand and grow ourcommunity health programs such as CHRISTUS St. Mary's Clinic, CHRISTUSHealthy Living Mobile Clinics, CHRISTUS School-based Clinics, Point of LightClinic, and CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread.

If you have any questions, or need additional information please visit ourwebsite CHRISTUSFoundation.org or contact me at 713-652-3100. Thankyou.
