In the age of the computer, many architectural projects, especially those created by students, appear ubiquitous. Software, not the user, dictates decisions. We value the journey and process less and less, while the flashy final images are elevated to supreme importance. This portfolio presents the opposite: the messy, unplanned, and even unsuccessful moments are transparent. It is these interstitial moments – content that exists in-between and underneath – that are full of character and individual identity. From studio projects that blend hand-drawn components with several other layers of digital media, to time dedicated to construction and service, I understand and expose each moment‘s value apart from the final solution. While seemingly unrelated to the final outcome, these moments are in fact essential to the design process. All too often, it is only after the project is completed that their value becomes clear. My portfolio, shot through with these moments, shows their importance from inception.

Rowing Museum_Unconventional Parameters
The new Georgetown Rowing Museum is located on the Potomac River directly adjacent to the Key Bridge, a main route into the D.C. neighborhood. Unique and unconventional site characteristics quickly became the driving force for much of the design. Unable to rely on traditional context, new parameters were used to stimulate the initial concept. Views and 3-dimensional movement systems, including a bridge, highway, and street all influenced the parti, which was created to address these parameters at multiple levels.

Rowing Museum_Unconventional Parameters Beginning with the obvious “bar” parti that accommodates the river adequately, the program is rearranged and stacked, now servicing not only the river but the bridge and elevated highway as well.

Essential views both to and from the site. While views to the site interact more strongly with topographical higher elements, views from the site engage at the lowest level, specifically the waterfront.

The primary gallery interaction is oriented towards the pedestrian and views outward. The back side, however, is abutted against the freeway, allowing for installations and signage visible to passing vehicles.

Space and Type_Addition through Subtraction
As a part of a computer applications in architecture class, this project was an exercise in taking a 2-dimensional element, in this case a particular type face, and transforming it into a 3-dimensional object that both created andoccupied space. Helevtica is a typeface which uses overlap and relating geometries to create a coherent relationship between each letter. Embodying this in 3-dimensional form, the final digital model is an application of an algorithm that first dissects the letters and then pieces them together, a process which relies upon and reaffirms the repetitive geometries of Helevetica.
Algorithm begins with 2-dimensional element. Extrusion is applied, then a series of cuts are made, eventually piecing the remnants back together to form the final object.

The result is not only an observable object with protruding forms, but also the beginnings of occupiable space.

Richmond Community Fields_Dimension and Detail
A new public pitch, which was previously a private cricket club, nurtures the need for community interaction and entertainment for the citizens of Richmond. While the larger move of the soccer/rugby pitch caters to urbanistic and public studies, the new supporting building on site offered the opportunity to study building mechanical systems, material applications, and construction details.

The historic stone wall is a focal point along Victoria Rd, a major thoroughfare. However, it currently serves the purposes of barring the public from the pitch. The strategy here was to preserve pieces of the wall, while perforating other sections in order to allow public access. As the facade progresses towards the large opening, materials unfamiliar to Richmond such as metal, glass, and concrete dominate the exterior.
Christopher G. Beck11 Christopher G. Beck
Section details reinforce overall design principals. The street front is layered with a structural stone wall and minimally sized openings, mimicking the historic building style of Richmond’s town center. As the section progresses towards the new public pitch (back), technical elements become more contemporary, with open web joists and glass curtain walls comprising the structure, thus reflecting building practices of today.

Garden of Reconciliation_Historical Landscape
Architectural ideas of landscape and garden design, areas which can be overlooked or left for last minute thought in a typical studio design process, became the focus of this project. While plant types, topography, and other natural features were studied extensively, each student was also required to study a specific garden movement in history. Combining ideas from the late 1800s in garden design with the concept of English/Irish reconciliation, a garden and memorial space was born.

Longitudinal Section ranges from barren field devoid of vegetation to forest blanket with tall, dense trees and winding path, reflecting the violence and conflict.
The center plateau terminates with a reflecting pool, signifying a place of peace and reconciliation, while allowing for lamentation of those lost.
Garden of Reconciliation_Historical Landscape
The entrance at the north, marked by a memorial for those fallen in the Irish War of Independence, has a steady, flat ground level. Materials and vegetation expand as visitors journey from start to finish: crushed gravel paths become large boulders, and small shrubs become towering evergreens.

Artist Live/Work Housing_Constructing Form
The creation of an artist’s live/work housing project allowed for a new process of design development. Beginning with an analysis of individual works of art, ideas and concepts were extracted from the artwork and used to design an individual living unit. Instead of creating a parti or overall form that was generated from the site, the individual unit was multiplied and pieced together to fit into the site. Whereas the whole can be the primary focus, the parti in this case becomes a catalyst for the design and decision making process.

Artist Live/Work Housing_Constructing Form
Process for developing building form. Beginning with an individual unit, parts are added so that the units can fit together like puzzle pieces. Next, the unit is copied and flipped, allowing the two units to stack together. Repeating this process allows the creation of an overall form that can be used to generate building structure, skin, etc.

While from the exterior the ramp is viewed as a ribbon that wraps several components of the building form, once inside the ramp becomes solid: viewing platforms, light fixtures, and side walls appear to be carved out of the wood mass, creating a more intimate viewing environment.

Event Space_Formal Systems
Beginning with a single human interaction, the event space project demonstrates how an architectural formal system, along with analysis of human behavior, can be used to sponsor a specific event. A matrix that interprets analysis of a face to face conversation versus a conversation through texting serves as the catalyst for the project, which eventually culminates with an interactive texting wall and meeting pods, servicing the two types of conversation in a single, integrated, and most importantly, human event.

The final event allows for users not only to interact through face to face conversation at the wall and meeting pods, but also through the ability to intercept anonymous messages.

Develop_Revit Estimation System
For over five years, Project Homecoming relied on Excel as its primary estimation tool. While relatively easy to use, hours were wasted entering the exact same data for every project. With Revit becoming standard, PH realized the benefits of the software, not limited to precise automatic square footage calculations and parametric data entry, all while producing an easily editable 3D model. I was hired as a consultant to first spend hours of initially repetitive material definitions and formula/data entry. Eventually I was able to develop a final, standard project template, no longer requiring monotonous spreadsheet editing, saving the company valuable staff hours across multiple positions and departments. This work also includes further personal investigations into material relations and project data.

Physical Revit layers ‘Invisible’ Revit layers
Unlike most architectural firms, the PH house building model is standardized, allowing for an extremely detailed family creation. However, it is not practical or feasible within Revit to physically model every screw, nail, piece of insulation, etc. The solution was to define “invisible,’ or membrane layers within Revit and then calculate prices based on those square footages. While every screw, for example, does not physically appear in the model, it is associated with a wall SF, an idea while not standard practice in the construction industry nonetheless is applicable and true.

Map demonstrating all possible materials and connections used in any Project Homecoming house. Each color represents a different cost code, which are used to separate materials for purchasing and accounting purposes. The four concentric rings surrounding the connections correspond to levels of square footage (within Revit).
The square footages not only represent a standard house, but also all materials and “invisible” layers necessary to define every possible system PH will use, including floor, wall, ceiling, and roof. SFs depicted in this map are atypical of a standard project because of the need to link and price, for example, plumbing subcontractor work to total project SF (hence the connection from every floor type to trade work, drywall screws to wall SF, etc.).

Design_Project Homecoming Rebranding
Since 2007, PH has devoted itself to the recovery and rebuilding effort of New Orleans. In 2011, PH began to shift its direction from solely a recovery organization to one that spent much effort in the realm of community development. With this change came the need to update the image of PH, which had not been touched since its early and makeshift start. Beginning with discovering the purest essence of PH, decisions were made as part of a marketing team. I was then responsible for the interpretation of these conversations into a new logo design and overall marketing/branding package. Build_Renovation and New Construction
As a community development organization building resilient neighborhoods in the greater New Orleans area. Project Homecoming relies heavily on AmeriCorps members to lead weekly volunteer construction groups on individual worksites. Projects range from total rebuilds of historic structures to ground up construction of affordable, flood safe, energy efficient homes. In total, I managed over 6 projects and participated in countless others. This work reflects a sample from two years of worksite management with Project Homecoming.
