A rich young man asks Jesus what he must do to receive eternal l i fe. This is a good guy and Jesus knows i t . He is l iving a good l i fe. He knows the commandments and has kept them. He knows the basics. Because he is such a fine young man, Jesus looks at him wi th love, and chal lenges him to go one step beyond the basics by sel l ing al l his possessions and giving the proceeds to the poor. That day, he could not do i t (Mark 10:17-27). Because he was such a good young man, i t is l ikely that eventual ly he did sel l his possessions, probably i tem by i tem.

Like he did wi th the young man, Jesus chal lenges us to go a step further, whatever that may be for each of us, toward growing in our goodness and promoting the good of others. At t imes we get stuck in negative thoughts about ourselves, think ing we could never measure up to the demands of Jesus. Jesus invi tes us to act from our good selves. We can get preoccupied wi th material wealth, ours or

that of others. Sometimes we can get so concerned wi th what we do or do not have outside of ourselves that we fai l to see the wealth of goodness we have inside of ourselves.

The Christ ian l i fe is not about having i t al l together. It is about bui lding on our goodness as God?s creations and moving forward step by step, trusting Jesus when he says nothing is impossible wi th God. A house is not bui l t beginning wi th the roof and bui lding down. It is bui l t start ing wi th the foundation and work ing up. It is better to clean a house room by room instead of trying to clean the whole thing al l at once. Somebody once said, ?It is the greatest of al l mistakes to do nothing because you can only do a l i t t le. Do what you can.?

In our fami l ies, maybe we cannot make i t al l better, but we can make part of i t better. Perhaps we cannot forgive completely, but we can be inspi red by someone else who can. We cannot end al l the wars in the world, but we can stop fuel ing the wars going on in our fami l ies, workplaces or neighborhoods. The rich young man could not give away everything so he did not give away anything. Doing a l i t t le is better than doing nothing. Where in our l ives have we not done anything because we could not do everything?

Christ Cathedral Parish's annual Christmas tree pre-sale is going on now unti l October 25th.

Parishioners may purchase a tree after any of the weekend Masses or in the parish reception office. Two tree sizes are avai lable 6-7? for $35

7-8? for $40.

These trees are grown in Oregon and arrive on Thanksgiving weekend and wi l l be distributed November 28 and 29.

Trees wi l l be avai lable for pick up in the backyard of the Christ Cathedral Communi ty Outreach Home.

Last year a dedicated group of volunteers sat out in the cold and

rain whi le

parishioners came by to pick up thei r beauti ful trees.

"It was one of the wettest t imes last year. It was fun helping people choose thei r trees though. It was nice going home smell ing l ike pine though," said Michael Bui , a volunteer from last year's tree distribution.

This year, confi rmation students wi l l be able to receive hours toward thei r communi ty service requi rements. Students interested may volunteer thei r t ime at the distribution table throughout the weekend.

THE NEED FOR THE BEADS By Jenna Jones

Because of the vi tal i ty of the rosary as a potent focus for prayer and in recogni t ion of the importance of i ts reci tat ion as a cherished devotional act, October has been designated by the Church as the Month of the Rosary.

Derived from Latin, rosary translates to a garland of roses, which is the flower that often symbolizes the Vi rgin Mary. The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, on Oct. 7, was fi rst establ ished by Pope St. Pius V to honor Mary for the victory over the Turks at Lepanto in 1571.

?Since the prayers of the rosary come from such excel lent sources ? from Our Lord Himself, from inspi red Scripture, and from the Church ? i t is not surprising that the rosary is so dear to our Blessed Mother and so powerful wi th heaven,? wri tes international ly-acclaimed theologian Father Wi l l iam G. Most in his book ?Mary in Our Li fe.?

In 2002, Pope John Paul II further emphasized the signi ficance of the rosary when he added the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, which center on Christ?s publ ic l i fe.

It was Pope Francis who art iculated a clear and beauti ful meaning of the rosary when he wrote in the Ital ian edi t ion of a book on Marian prayer, ?The rosary is a prayer that always accompanies me; i t is also the prayer of the ordinary people and the saints? i t is a prayer from my heart.?

The efficacy of the rosary and i ts celebration during the month of October may l ie in i ts humble beginnings, according to Father Fel ix Just, S.J., the Executive Director of Loyola Insti tute for Spi ri tual i ty. He explains that the Prayer of the rosary was developed in place of the complicated ?Li turgy of the Hours,? which is based on the psalms during the medieval period.

?It requi res some rather thick books to detai l the weekly and monthly sequence of psalms,

prayers, Scripture readings, and other texts that make up the ?Li turgy of the Hours,?? says Father Fel ix. ?Thus, the rosary provided a much simpler form of dai ly prayer, especial ly for people who could not read or could not afford the big books that contain the ?Li turgy of the Hours.??

It was Pope Leo XXIII who passionately held that the rosary was meant to affect society as a whole in addi t ion to i ts power in one?s spi ri tual l i fe. His 1893 encycl ical emphasized that the rosary could have social effects, wri t ing, ?It is mainly to expand the k ingdom of Christ that we look to the rosary for the most effective help.?

Over the centuries, there have been numerous advocates for the rosary. Father Fel ix says, ?Several rel igious orders of the Cathol ic Church, including the Dominicans and almost any order wi th Mary in thei r name: Marists, Marianists, Servi tes and Carmeli tes.?

Beyond Cathol ic leaders, Father Fel ix adds, ?Many groups of lay men and women have also strongly promoted the regular use of the rosary, not only the Blue Army and Sodal i t ies of Mary, but also the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, which asks i t members to pray the rosary at least weekly, i f not dai ly.?

Today, the rosary remains a strong devotion among American Cathol ics. Pope Benedict XVI, during an address at the Basi l ica of St. Mary Major in 2008, offered these words for Cathol ics during the Month of the Rosary: ?The rosary, when i t is prayed in an authentic way, not mechanical and superficial but profoundly, i t brings, in fact, peace and reconci l iat ion. It contains wi thin i tself the heal ing power of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, invoked wi th fai th and love at the center of each ?Hai l Mary.??

Un joven rico le pregunta a Jesús que es lo que tengo que hacer para recibi r vida eterna. Este es un buen chico y Jesús lo sabe. Él está gozando de una vida plena. Él sabe los mandamientos y los mantiene. Él sabe lo básico. Porque es un joven tan fino, Jesús lo mira con amor, y lo reta a que vaya un paso más al lá de lo básico pidiéndole que venda todas sus pertenencias y les de las ganancias a los pobres. Como era un joven tan bueno, es muy probable que eventualmente el vendiera sus pertenencias, probablemente uno por uno. Así como hizo con el joven, Jesús nos reta a i r un paso más al lá, sea cual sea para cada uno de nosotros, hacia el crecimiento de nuestra bondad y promoviendo la bondad en los demás. En ocasión, nos estancamos en pensamientos negativos de nosotros mismos, creyendo que nunca podremos medirnos a las demandas de Jesús. Jesús nos invi ta a actuar con

nuestro lado bueno. Nos podemos preocupar por las riquezas materiales, nuestras y las de los demás. A veces nos preocupa tanto lo que hacemos o no tenemos a nuestro alcance que fal lamos en ver la riqueza de bondad que tenemos dentro de nosotros.

La vida Crist iana no es de tener todo preparado. Es el de edi ficar sobre nuestra bondad como creación de Dios y avanzando

hacia adelante paso por paso, confiando en Jesús cuando él dice que nada es imposible con Dios. Una casa no es edi ficada comenzando con el techo y construyendo hacia abajo. Es construida comenzando por la base y obrar hacia arriba. Es preferible l impiar una casa cuarto por cuarto en vez de tratar de l impiarla toda a la vez. Alguien una vez di jo, ?Es la mayor de las equivocaciones el no hacer nada porque solamente puedes hacer poco. Haz lo que puedas.?

En nuestras fami l ias, quizás no podemos mejorar todo, pero podemos mejorar una parte. Quizás no podemos perdonar completamente, pero podemos ser inspi rados por alguien que si puede. No podemos terminar con todas las guerras en el mundo, pero si podemos dejar de echarle combustible a las guerras en nuestras fami l ias, trabajo o vecindarios. El joven rico no pudo regalarlo todo y por eso no regalo nada. Hacer poco es mejor que no hacer nada. Cuando en nuestras vidas no hemos hecho nada porque no pudimos hacer todo?

Mark ing the fi rst professional studio recording to take place in the Sist ine Chapel, the pope?s Sist ine Chapel Choir features on a new CD ti t led, ?Cantate Domino.?

Produced by Deutsche Grammophon and Universal Music Ital ia, the new 16-track CD was released Sept. 25 wi th the proceeds earmarked for the poor through the pope?s chari table efforts.

The Sist ine Chapel Choir, made up of 20 men and 30 boys, sings music that had been wri t ten speci fical ly for papal celebrations in the Sist ine Chapel and for the papal choi r during the Renaissance.

The pieces include Gregorian chant and works by Renaissance masters Giovanni Pierluigi  da Palestrina, Tomas Luis de Victoria, Orlande de Lassus and Fel ice Anerio. It also features a world premiere recording of Gregorio Al legri?s original composi t ion of ?Miserere? ? found archived in a codex from 1661 in the Vatican Library.

Msgr. Massimo Palombella ? di rector of the Sist ine Chapel Choir ? said in a press release Sept. 28: ?It is my hope that these masterworks wi l l touch mi l l ions of l isteners worldwide, and connect them to the

historical culture and deep spi ri tual i ty of the Cathol ic Church.?

He told Vatican Radio that the ponti fical choi r, which traces back to the 1470s, is dedicated today to making i ts music known beyond the wal ls of Vatican Ci ty and to helping people experience ?the Lord, salvation, evangel ization? through sacred music.

Meanwhi le, San Paolo Mult imedia wi l l be releasing sometime in November, ?Wake Up!? a rock album featuring Pope Francis? words and prayers.

Jesui t Father Federico Lombardi , Vatican spokesman, told reporters Sept. 29 that San Paolo had permission to use the voice of the pope for the album, which is being distributed by the label, Bel ieve Digi tal , and is being made avai lable on iTunes.

Layered over original scores of pop and prog-rock music are original Vatican Radio recordings of Pope Francis as he del ivered, l ive, important talks or prayers in four languages.

For example, ?Wake Up!?, the t i t le song featured on the album, uses a cl ip of the pope from his homi ly during Mass wi th young people in South Korea in August 2014. Speaking in Engl ish, the pope says, ?I don?t l ike to see young people who are sleeping. No! Wake up! Go! Go forward! Dear young people, ?God, our God, has blessed us.'?
