tunity to bag a bargain or two. The Shildon Chamber of Trade (CoT) and Shildon AFC Supporters Club promoted the renewal of the CoT Loyalty Cards and Supporter Club Card for the bargain price of just £5 for both. The Chamber of Trade had a PS4 console up for grabs as first prize in their raffle, as well as providing entertainment throughout the day in the form of the Salvation Army Band, Sunnydale Campus Choir, Durham Constabulary Band and a bagpiper, concluding in the ringing of St John’s Church bells.Shildon Town Council’s Christmas Procession took place as the night fell, and a large crowd gathered at Church Street, waiting for the arrival of Santa Claus, who greeted all the children, whilst mingling with the crowd. Rev. Raymond Cuthbertson with Rev. David Tomlinson at the unveiling of the newly refurbished St John’s Church Hall, named after Rev. Cuthbertson’s late wife, Suzanne.
Hall named in memory of Suzanne Cuthbertson
Reverend Raymond Cuth-bertson, previous Vicar of St John’s in Shildon, returned to the town on Thursday as St John’s named their newly refur-bished hall in honour of Raymond’s wife, the late Suzanne Cuthbertson. Suzanne was part of a group of parishioners who over the 16 years of their time in Shildon worked hard to beautify the church with embroidery and
tapestry. Each piece was framed and placed in the church for the generations to come. A former head of art at Barnard Castle school, Suzanne died in 2011 just as the couple were looking forward to a well-earned retirement. The refurbishment of the hall in St John’s, at a cost of just under £30,000, has included a disabled lift, suspended ceiling, new
lighting, carpets and re-decoration. Rev. David said: “Suzanne made art accessible for all, and this hall is about continuing the legacy of inclusion and opportunity that she left within the life of the church.” Rev. Cuthbertson, accom-panied by Suzanne’s brother Peter, thanked the con-gregation, describing their gesture as: “An honour that is profoundly humbling.”

sion along with Shildon Town Council, Deputy Town Mayor, Councillor Trish Pemberton and followed by the crowd. Whilst the festive tunes played, Santa greeted all the children who had lined the street until he arrived at the Town Square. A large crowd had assem-bled, to watch Santa take his place ready for the eagerly awaited moment when the Christmas Tree lights would be lit. The crowd enjoyed en-tertainment provided by Timothy Hackworth School Choir, who sang beautifully, helping to set the scene. Councillor Trish Pember-ton had the honour of officially turning on the Christmas Tree lights and after a tense countdown by the crowd, the tree was brightly illuminated by the
twinkling lights. Shildon Town Council provided free family festive entertainment at the Civic Hall where Santa was also on hand for the boys and girls to visit.Mr Twister and the Bouncing Elf entertained everyone in the main hall while children had their faces and nails creatively painted. For those children who were prepared to brave the wind, there were free rides on the Tea Cups. Local organisations were able to promote their message and raise needed funds from raffles and tombolas at the table top sale, where everyone involved was a winner.A spokesperson for the Town Council said: “Thank you Shildon, for again sup-porting this year’s Christ-mas Market, Christmas Pro-cession and festive family entertainment.”

The Town Crier has a number of publications available for that last minute Christmas stocking filler. A few copies remain of two important books documenting the industrial history of the area: The First Five Miles, by local author, Gerald Slack and Here Today, Gone Tomorrow by ex-miner, Brian Turner. The First Five Miles is one of the only books of its kind in celebration of the 190th birthday of the Stockton & Darlington Railway.Gerald Slack from Aycliffe Village, alongside Michael O’Neill, Chairman of the Aucklands Railways Group, has penned a unique walk guide which provides an illustrated history of the early days of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, with a particular focus on the route from Witton Park to Brusselton and Shildon, highlighting the remains of the railway’s infrastructure along the way.The publication has a heavy emphasis on Shildon’s role
in the project, with 10-15 pages (containing an array of interesting photographs)solely committed to the town. The book is priced at just £8.99.In his foreword to Brian Turner’s book, Here Today, Gone Tomorrow, An Indus-trial and Social History of the South West Durham Coalfields, Dr F W Smith, Consulting Geologist and past President of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical En-gineers, says the coalfield “has been poorly recorded in the past despite the unusual blend of large and small collieries, drift mines, the remarkable variety of coals and geological condi-tions and its location in the borderlands between in-dustrial and rural Durham.”A few copies of the book, which features dozens of photographs from the mining communities as well as drawings and maps of all the local Shildon coal mines, including Brussel-
ton, Middridge and Eldon is priced £17.50.In addition to the two books, The Crier also has copies of the Shildon 2016 Calendar produced by St John’s Church with photo-graphs taken by the youth of Shildon. The slimline calendar, filled with images from around the town, will prove to be not only picturesque, but a useful addition to any wall. The calendar costs just £3.50 or three for £10.All items are available by calling in to The Crier offices in the Shildon Town Council building. The Crier will be open every weekday until Christmas Eve.
Two books documenting local history and the Shildon 2016 calendar, published by St John’s Church, are all available to purchase from the Town Crier office.

Greenfield College’s Cree volunteers have created an impressive unicorn which brilliantly illuminates the Sunnydale Campus building as it leaps onto the roof.
Greenfield College Sunnydale Campus adds some sparkle
After the success of the Cree Lodge at Greenfield Arts’ Winter Wonderland on 25th November, which brought together various handicraft skills to create a warming log cabin out of carpet rolls; a wonderful snowy mountain display out of folded paper and an inspiring light installa-tion out of scaffolding, the Cree volunteers decided to spread the sparkle and warmth to the Greenfield Community College Sun-
nydale Campus in Shildon. They worked tirelessly in the wind and rain, with the help of production manager Richard Agar, to prepare the metal structure, which replicates a leaping unicorn, for the roof. The structure is lit bril-liantly with stage lights and a net of fairy lights which make up its tail, spread-ing across the side of the building.Staff have said how bril-liant it is as it brightens up
their walk into work each day during the recent grey, dreary days. Arts Centre Director of Arts and Creativity, Katy Milne said: “It is great to bring some sparkle and warmth with such a beauti-ful artistic piece and bring something positive and lovely to see, something which we at Greenfield Arts believes is important for all creative projects, courses, workshops and exhibitions.’
We recently reported new times and venues for the 5p bus in Shildon, however a correction has been issued to explain that the new times and venues are not due to begin until January. From January 2016, the bus will visit Shildon on the first Tuesday of every month and will be stationed at Park View, opposite the police station from 10.30am-11.15am.The bus will then move to Middleton Road, where it
will remain from 11.30am-12 noon. Finally, the bus will travel from Shildon to St Mary’s Church, Vart Road, Bishop Auckland, where it will be available from 12.15pm-12.45pm.A spokesperson for St Cuth-bert’s Care, which runs the bus said: “Please note that our times and venues are subject to amendment at any time, so keep an eye on the local press for any changes to the schedule.”

Gareth Graham Wakefield pleaded guilty to four charges arising out of a driving incident and will appear at Durham Crown Court on 30th December, after Magistrates at Newton Aycliffe declined jurisdiction in the case. On 26th November the 25-year-old, of Primitive Street, Shildon, had driven dangerously in a Ford Mondeo, as police pursued him. He had no licence, no in-surance and failed to stop as a traffic patrol officer put on his blue lights. The court heard that, at around 5pm on a dark, wet evening, in heavy rush hour traffic, Wakefield sped at up to 60 mph in 30 mph areas. He drove on pavements, took roundabouts, bollards and keep left islands on the wrong side of the road, forcing on-coming traffic to take evasive action, as the police gave chase on the A688 into St. Helen’s, on
in to Oakley Green Estate, back on to the A688, along Station Road, via Leazes Lane and Tintern Road, Melrose Drive and again the A688 before entering Woodhouse Close Estate. There, a Peugeot car pulled out in front of Wakefield, who raced along the public footpath, as the other vehicle blocked the road. The Mondeo then turned into the cul de sac of Cheltenham Court and the driver’s door was opened, before Wakefield aston-ishingly bailed out of the vehicle at 30 mph. The Mondeo careered across the road, ramming an Audi which was parked on a private driveway and which in turn spun across to a neighbouring driveway and into a parked Citroen C3 before continuing on into a wooden fence.Fortunately, despite all this mayhem, no-one was injured. Wakefield was released on unconditional bail.

Austerity budget to increase pressure on County CouncilAn update on budget planning for the North East’s largest council - in-cluding the impact of the Chancellor’s Comprehen-sive Spending Review (CSR) - will reveal a total savings target of close to £290m by 2020. Members of the public will have an opportunity to have their say on the Council’s budget proposals in a series of consultations, including a public meeting at St John’s RC School in Bishop Auckland on Wednesday December 16th from 6pm-7.30pm - the same day as the Cabinet sits to note the contents of the budget planning paper. The paper sets out a four year plan which will see continued consulta-tion with the public on spending priorities and on the impact of proposed changes. Final decisions will be made on 74 proposals for savings outlined in the report by Cabinet and Full Council in February. Alongside these measures continuing efforts will be made to highlight and support the ‘Durham Ask’, a programme which sees the council support com-munities and the voluntary sector to take over some council buildings and services. The council Leader, Cllr Simon Henig said: “We have done our best to protect frontline services and to respond to the pri-orities set by the public and we are committed to
maintaining this approach.“Continuing spending cuts on this scale inevitably mean making tremen-dously difficult decisions including changes to services, altering how we deliver those services and reducing our own costs at the same time.“As we manage this we will use a potential further £25m in reserves to mitigate the impact on frontline services as best we can.“We are also committed to ongoing consultation with residents so that we understand how proposed changes may affect people and we will pay special at-tention to those who are most vulnerable as well as people living in more remote rural areas.”The continuing austerity also means there will be a further impact on jobs at the council. In 2010, then facing budget reductions of £123m, Durham an-nounced workforce reduc-tions, of 1,950 posts. That figure remained, despite austerity continuing and a revised savings target of £260m earlier this year. However, facing additional savings the council may have to reduce the number of posts by a further 400. The freezing of vacant posts and redeployment – as well as skills training and the introduction of more efficient ways of working will be used to reduce the impact.Cllr Henig added: “We recognise our staff are our
biggest asset, which is why we have strived so hard to protect as many jobs as possible, while making greater cuts to manage-ment and support costs.“Sadly, like many public sector organisations, we may have to reduce our workforce further to priori-tise spending on services wherever we can. Again, we will delete vacant posts and use redeployment to minimise the impact.”The council’s financial planning is based on a two per cent increase in council tax over the next four years. However, the CSR offered local authorities the chance to help replace lost central Government funds by adding a further two per cent social care precept to council tax bills – with income from this ring-fenced for spending on adult social care. This option will be part of the upcoming budget consulta-tion exercise.Earlier in the autumn of 2015 the council’s 14 Area Action Partnerships took part in the latest round of consultation on how the council should manage its reducing budget. Feedback from this, and an online consultation option, revealed the public’s spending priorities had not changed. Shildon Railway Cricket Club elected its youngest ever chairman at its recent Annual General Meeting. Bret Upton, who turns 21 this week, will take on the role. “We are delighted that members of the younger generation are willing to step up to the plate and take on responsibility off the field,” said out-going chairman, John Brennan.“It wouldn’t surprise me to find that Bret might be the youngest cricket club chairman in the country,” he added. “We all know of Bret’s ability on the field. He has represented Durham County at Under 19 level and this season won the North Yorks & South Durham Premiere League Division 3 Batting Award and was in the top ten bowlers in the division.“It’s our job to support him in every way we can and hopefully this will encour-age more of our younger members to take positions on the committee, thus ensuring that the club will
be in good hands in the future.”“I played most of my junior cricket at Shildon,” said Ben, “and hope that, in this role, I can give something back to the club, not just on the field. “I promise that I’ll be trying hard and will do my best to help the club progress.” Other officers elected were: President & Vice Chairman, Jim Robinson; Vice-Presidents: Peter Dargue, Fred Brownless, Jimmy Morland, Keith Robinson and Councillor Henry Nicholson; Secre-tary & Treasurer, John Brennan; Assistant Secre-tary, Norman Nash; Child Welfare Officer, Del Owen; Juniors Rep, John Young. The new committee will meet for the first time on Thursday 3rd December, at the Railway Sports & Social Club, at 7.15pm. In the only Division One game to survive the weather, Shildon closed the gap on leaders Morpeth to two points after a compre-hensive 4-1 win at Norton & Stockton Ancients on Saturday 6th December. The home side won the toss and hoped to capital-ise on the conditions by swapping the sides around and playing with fierce wind at their backs in the first half.Instead, they found it as difficult to cope as the visitors, although Shildon were able to adapt better in both halves. And rather than take an advantage into the second half, it was Shildon who made the breakthrough through captain, Daniel Moore, for a slender lead at the break.Shildon could and should have extended their lead

at the beginning of the second half when Anthony Bell intercepted a pass but put his shot wide of the post. However, unlike the hosts, the Railwaymen took full advantage of the wind, spending much of the second half camped in the Ancients’ half.Shildon doubled their lead after a low cross was missed by everyone at the near post and found Lewis Dodds all alone to sidefoot into an empty net.A free kick on the right led to the third when Anthony Bell whipped in a cross which was touched home by Daniel Moore for his second of the game. With the game looking over, Norton gave them-selves hope when Charmey curled a shot into the top corner from the edge of the area.

But it was to be a brief flicker with Shildon heading back upfield and restoring the three-goal lead within seconds through substitute Kyle Fryatt. The diminutive winger’s deft touch and turn deceived his marker while his low shot was placed out of the keeper’s reach and into the bottom corner of the net.The win reduces the deficit at the top of the table to two points and, should the top two match their results until they meet, Shildon could swap places with the leaders on Boxing Day.Next up for Shildon is the replayed match away at Ashington on Saturday, 12th December. The original result - a 2-1 win for Shildon - was voided as a result of the ineligibility of Anthony Bell on his debut for the Rail-waymen.
