Debbie Philips

After 20 years working for YFYFC, firstly as part of the field team and

more recently as welfare and safeguarding officer, Debbie Phillips

knows all about creating a safe environment for young farmers.

“The trick is to help members run safe meetings and events without

overwhelming them with rules and regulations,” says Debbie, who

grew-up a member of YFC and has had agricultural connections all

her working life. “I love it when clubs ring me up and ask advice. It’s

far better to think things through properly beforehand rather than

dealing with the fallout after an event or meeting goes wrong.”

However, Debbie says that if there is a problem it’s important not to

sweep it under the carpet. “Rather than disappearing issues tend to

get worse if they are not tackled quickly,” she says.

New club officers can find organising events and understanding rules

daunting.

“I am here to help,” says Debbie. “Stepping up to the challenge and

getting involved in YFC is a wonderful thing. But you don’t have to

carry all the responsibility on your own shoulders.

“The chances are I’ve dealt with the same worries many, many times

before. Don’t forget I’m only a phone call or an email away …”

Leave a message for Debbie to get in touch via county office on

01423 865870 or email [email protected]

Sort it Out

If you are organising an event, Debbie says:

Ensure that all members know where they are supposed to be

Complete risk assessments prior to the event Ensure that first aid and toilet facilities are available. Keep people and vehicles/animals separate Always consider the safety of junior members, involving

parents/club leaders if necessary Review the event afterwards to gain feedback for

planning for next time
