O Holy NightSo begins the popular carol, but nightand darkness can sometimes beunpleasant, even sinister. How oftenthey are associated with forebodingand fear, so that people long for the

day. In some respects that particularnight was just another night, the sameas the rest. Bethlehem was asleep, except for the few shepherds guardingtheir flocks in the nearby fields. But itwas not really just another night! Itwas to be

    The night of the dear

    Saviours birth.

That great event had long beenpromised. No sooner had our firstparents sinned in the Garden of Edenthan God in grace had promised aSaviour, a Redeemer.

Long lay the worldin sin and error pining

Then, suddenly, the darkness of thisholy night was dispelled. An angelappeared to the shepherds, and withhim a multitude of celestial beings.

The Eastern sky was alight with theglory of the Lord. The message of theangels was glorious too, the promisedSaviour had come!

However, the circumstances of Hiscoming were in great contrast to theangelic glory. There was no splen-dour, no pomp and no royal welcome.Just a baby born in a stable, wrappedin swaddling clothes and laid to sleepin a manger bed by a peasant girl fromNazareth.

But this tender infant was, in thewords of the angel, Christ the Lord! The baby in the manger was in fact

the Son of God, in great grace cominginto our world to accomplish salvationfor guilty mankind. And at what a cost!

That manger at Bethlehem was thebeginning of a perfect life which wouldlead to Calvary, where the Lord Jesuswould offer himself as a sacrifice forsinners. Just as that holy night of Hisbirth was turned into day by the glory

of the heavenly messengers, the dayof His crucifixion was turned into nightas he suffered in loneliness on thecross. He voluntarily went into deep,

dense darkness and sufferedsinless substitute for guilty sBefore His birth the angels wJoseph was, Call His name JeHe shall save His people fromsins (Matthew 1:21) andsalvation is offered freely to

repentant sinner. Jesus is nowfrom the dead. He is alive in Hfrom which he came. From thaof glory He invites every needyto come to Him.

Countless thousands have coHim, the one whose

    gospel is peace,

resting on Him alone for saThey have stood, as it were, cross, and heard the words, died for our sins (1CorinthiansChrist died for the ungodly (R5:6), and they have said, He dme.

    The weary world rejoice

How many there are who rejothat holy night when He came idarkness of our world to turn ouinto day? Do you rejoice, knHim as your Saviour?
