WELCOME

ON THIS HOLY NIGHT, we engage one of the deep mysteries of our faith. In celebrating Christmas, we try to push away the cares of the moment and the rush of things to do. As we worship, we create a wide, sweet space to listen, to pray, to sing, and to receive the gift of God’s presence. No one will ever make sense of how God, the Infinite, was revealed in the finite. So we tell a story and simply wonder at it all. Welcome to a house of wonder.

ANNOUNCEMENTS We welcome everyone to Westminster Church for these Christmas Eve Services. A special welcome is extended to visitors and those who return for the holiday. If you live in the Wilmington area and do not have a church home, we hope you will consider uniting with our church family. The Chancel flowers this evening are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Charles M. Krick, Jr. and Janet and John Rowell by the Linderman, Krick and Rowell families. We encourage you to take poinsettias to our homebound members as you leave the 8:00 or 10:00 worship service. Special cards will be available in a box at the reception desk with recipient’s names and addresses. If you will be taking a poinsettia to a homebound member, please be sure to take the card with the flower so that we know which people have received a plant. The Church Office will be closed on Monday, December 27, Friday, December 31 and Monday, January 3.

Sunday, December 26 and Sunday, January 2: One morning service at 10:00 a.m. Join us as we continue to celebrate the Christmas season through word and song. We will offer Cribbery and

Sunday School for Under Six. Enjoy coffee and fellowship in the Meeting Room following the service.

FAMILY SERVICE 4:00 P.M.

CALL TO WORSHIP Into our world as into Mary’s womb,

Come, Lord Jesus. Into the forgotten places, as into the stable,

Come, Lord Jesus. Into the lives of the poor, bringing hope; Into the lives of the powerful, bringing caution; Into the lives of the weary, bringing rest; Into the lives of the wise, bringing restlessness; And into our lives and longing, whatever our estate –

Come, Lord Jesus! *CAROL “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” CAROL It came upon the midnight clear, For lo, the days are hastening on, That glorious song of old, By prophet bards foretold, From angels bending near the earth, When with the evercircling years To touch their harps of gold: Comes round the age of gold; “Peace on the earth, good will to all, When peace shall over all the earth From heaven’s all gracious King”: Its ancient splendors fling, The world in solemn stillness lay, And the whole world give back the song To hear the angels sing. Which now the angels sing. *OPENING PRAYER

Holy God, you came to Mary and Joseph, to the shepherds and angels, to the little village of Bethlehem. Come now to us: be born in us this night. Amen.

*CAROL “O Little Town of Bethlehem” O little town of Bethlehem, For Christ is born of Mary; How still we see thee lie! And gathered all above, Above thy deep and dreamless sleep While mortals sleep, the angels keep The silent stars go by. Their watch of wondering love. Yet in thy dark streets shineth O morning stars, together The everlasting light; Proclaim the holy birth! The hopes and fears of all the years And praises sing to God the King, Are met in thee tonight. And peace to all on earth.

How silently, how silently, The wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heaven. No ear may hear His coming, But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him, still The dear Christ enters in.

Passages in bold print may be said by all. At the asterisk (*) please stand (as you are able).

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O God, forgive us when the extras of Christmas overshadow its essence. Forgive us when the trappings of Christmas – the tree, the presents, the guests, the decorations – detract from the simple story of a baby born in a manger. Forgive us when our songs of praise to You are drowned out by the rush and hurriedness of the season. Forgive us when memories of Christmases past crowd out the possibility of your presence as God-with-us now. Amen.

RESPONSE

O holy child of Bethlehem, Descend to us we pray; Cast out our sin and enter in, Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels The Great glad tiding tell; O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS LESSON Matthew 1:18-23 CAROL “Infant Holy, Infant Lowly”

Infant holy, Infant lowly, For His bed a cattle stall; Oxen lowing, Little knowing Christ the babe is Lord of all. Swift are winging Angels singing, Noels ringing, Tidings bringing; Christ the babe is Lord of all. Flocks were sleeping; Shepherds keeping Vigil till the morning new. Saw the glory, Heard the story, Tidings of a gospel true. Thus rejoicing, Free from sorrow, Praises voicing Greet the morrow; Christ the babe was born for you.

LESSON Luke 2:1-7 CAROL “Away in a Manger” MUELLER

Away in a manger, no crib for His bed, The cattle are lowing, the poor Baby wakes, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head. But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes. The stars in the sky looked down where He lay, I love Thee Lord Jesus, look down from the sky, The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay. And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Gracious God, who promised to send a Redeemer to your people, we confess that we have not trusted your promise, but have busied ourselves with activities which obstruct its fulfillment. We give presents, but fail to be present with one another. We socialize with friends, but fail to welcome the stranger in our midst. We create commotion, and refuse to receive your peace. Forgive us, God, for our busyness and our lack of trust. Teach us to wait with expectant patience for the fulfillment of your promise to us. Amen.

INVITATION TO THE TABLE AND LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being.

What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE

COMMUNION ANTHEMS “Still, Still, Still” arr. Robert A. Hobby

Still, still, still, one can hear the falling snow. Sleep, sleep, sleep, ’tis the eve of our Savior’s birth. For all is hushed, the world is sleeping, The night is peaceful all around you, Holy Star its vigil keeping. close your eyes, let sleep surround you. Still, still, still, one can hear the falling snow. Sleep, sleep, sleep, ’tis the eve of our Savior’s birth.

Dream, dream, dream of the joyous day to come. While guardian angels without number watch you as you sweetly slumber, Dream, dream, dream of the joyous day to come.

“In the Bleak Midwinter” Harold Darke

In the bleak midwinter Enough for him, whom cherubim Frosty wind made moan, Worship night and day, Earth stood hard as iron, A breastful of milk Water like a stone; And a mangerful of hay; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, Enough for him, whom angels Snow on snow, Fall down before, In the bleak midwinter the ox and ass and camel Long ago. Which adore.

Our God, Heav’n cannot hold him What can I give him, Nor earth sustain; Poor as I am? Heav’n and earth shall flee away If I were a shepherd When he comes to reign: I would bring a lamb, In the bleak midwinter If I were a Wise Man A stable place sufficed I would do my part, The Lord god Almighty Yet what I can give him, Jesus Christ. Give my heart.

From the North to the South, from the East to the West, flowing toward all people on earth,

comes the light of hope born in Bethlehem. And the government will be upon his shoulders, and his name will be called “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Christ will rule with justice and mercy from this time forth and for evermore.

*HYMN NO. 31 “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” MENDELSSOHN

PRAYER OF ADORATION

Loving God, help us remember the birth of Jesus, that we may share in the song of the angels, the gladness of the shepherds, and the worship of the magi. Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world. Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting. Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings, and teach us to be merry with clear hearts. Amen. (Robert Louis Stevenson)
