Christmas Eve 2005

Peachtree Presbyterian Church

Dear Friends,

Welcome to Christmas Eve 005.

“O Holy Night, the stars are brightly shining, it is the night of our dear Savior’s birth.”

Tonight our sanctuary becomes a stable with all the world a stage to re-enact the ancient drama of our Christ’s birth. In our singing we become one with the heavenly choir proclaiming the “good news of great joy which shall be to all people.” Tonight when our Lord comes again in search of lodging, this time He finds welcome in the inn of our hearts.

Sit back and listen closely – God is in this place and He is eager to speak to each of us through the glorious music and proclamation of His Word.

It has become a Christmas tradition at Peachtree that our offering is given to the construction of a Habitat home, thus providing “room in the inn” for a needy family. In the aftermath of Katrina, the need for housing is more critical than ever. In this city there are children who have no place to go at the end of the school day but to a homeless shelter or a substandard apartment. It takes around $50,000 to build one Habitat home in Atlanta. My prayer is for us to provide at least one family with a new home through tonight’s offering.

Jesus’ very first sermon began with these words: God’s Spirit is on me; he’s chosen me to preach the Message of good news to the poor.... (Luke 4:18a, The Message). Tonight we continue the ministry Jesus began nearly ,000 years ago. I hope you will open your heart tonight to make room in the inn…for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of Jesus Christ.

May this be for you an evening of hushed awe at the wonder of God’s love.

God bless you and your family this Christmas!

Your Pastor,

Vic Pentz

Leader: The Lord be with you.People: And also with you.Leader: Lift up your hearts.People: We lift them up to the Lord.Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Leader: It is truly right and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise, O holy God, creator and ruler of the universe. You created light out of darkness and brought forth life on the earth. You formed us in your image and set us in this world to love and serve you, and to live in peace with all that you have made. When we turned from you, you did not turn from us but spoke to us through the prophets who looked for that day when justice shall triumph and peace shall reign over all the earth. Finally, you sent Jesus Christ, your Son, into this dark world to bring light and to satisfy the longings of your people for a Savior. In Christ, you became flesh and lived among us, full of grace and truth, and we beheld your glory, Emmanuel, God with us! Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of angels and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name:

*People (sung): Gloria in Excelsis Deo! Gloria in Excelsis Deo!

(please be seated)

Leader: Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these your gifts of bread and wine, that the bread we break and the cup we bless may be the communion of the body and blood of Christ.

People: Make us one with Christ and with all who share this feast. Unite us in faith, encourage us with hope, inspire us to love, that we may serve as your faithful disciples until we feast at your table in glory.

4 5

Leader: Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor are yours, almighty God, forever and ever.

And now as our Savior Christ has taught us we are bold to pray…

People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors,And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Anthem O Holy Night .......................................................................................................................Adolphe Adam The Chancel Choir arr. John Rutter

Gloria Martin, soprano

O Holy night, the stars are brightly shining. It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, ‘til he appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices, O night divine! O night when Christ was born! Led by the light of faith serenely beaming, with glowing hearts by his cradle we stand. So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, behold three wise men from the Orient land. The king of kings lay thus in lowly manger, In all our trials born to be our friend. He knows our need, to our weakness is no stranger, Behold your king! Before him lowly bend! Truly he taught us to love one another, his song is love and his gospel is peace. Chains shall he break for the slave is our brother, and in his name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, let all within us praise his holy name. Christ is the Lord; O praise his name forever, his power and glory ever more proclaim!

The Anthem of Redemption and Hope Thou Shalt Know Him ......................................................Mark SirettThe Chamber Choir

Thou shalt know him when he comes, not by any din of drums, Nor his manners, nor his airs, nor by anything he wears.

Thou shalt know him when he comes, not by crown or by his gown, But his coming known shall be, by the harmony which his coming makes in thee.

Thou shalt know him when he comes. Amen, Amen. —Anonymous

The Carol It Came Upon the Midnight Clear .......................................................................................... caRol

It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth, to touch their harps of gold:“Peace on the earth, good will to men, from heaven’s all gracious King.”The world is solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing.

For lo, the days are hastening on, by prophet bards foretold,When with the evercircling years comes round the age of gold; When peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling,And the whole world give back the song which now the angels sing.

The Candlelight Anthem O Holy Night ................................................................................. Adolphe Adam The Chamber Choir arr. John Rutter

Clay Hilley, soloist

The Candlelight Carol Silent Night, Holy Night ............................................................................. Stille nacht

Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright,Round yon Virgin Mother and Child! Holy Infant, so tender and mild,Sleep in heavenly peace; sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night! Holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight,Glories stream from heaven afar,Heavenly hosts sing: “Alleluia! Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born.”

18 19

Silent night! Holy night! Son of God, love’s pure LightRadiant beams from Thy Holy face,With the dawn of redeeming grace,Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth; Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

Silent night! Holy night! Wondrous Star, lend thy light; With the angels let us sing,Alleluia to our King;Christ the Saviour is born; Christ the Saviour is born.
