Where God is born, mercy flourishes. Mercy is the most precious gift which God gives us. Today, then, let us together rejoice in the day of our salvation. As we contemplate the crib, let us gaze on the open arms of Jesus, which show us the merciful embrace of God.

Christ is born for us, let us rejoice in the day of our salvation!

—Pope Francis

Christmas Gratitude! This, as they say, is the season of giving. We tend to run around like chickens with our heads cut off getting stuff ready and trying to find the perfect gift. However, perhaps the best way we are going to experience the joy of this season is not in finding the perfect gift, but in taking time to have gratitude for the gifts we have received. With all the busyness, we can run the risk of failing to recognize the beauty of the gifts we have been given. When I was a teenager, I took for granted the gift of my parents love for me. If fact, I was a downright punk who wasn’t really grateful for anything my folks did. And so, my relationship (like many teenager’s) was not all that great with my parents. As I grew older, I began to recognize all they had done for me and took time to show gratitude for the gift of their love. It was then that our relationship reached a whole new level. The same can be said for our relationship with God. If we take for granted all the gifts that He has given us, then we are just like that punk kid, spoiled and ungrateful. This season of Christmas is an opportunity to stop and recognize the gifts that God has given us. We are invited to begin to be grateful for all the gifts that God has blessed us with. If we do this, our relationship with God will reach a whole new level. Have a blessed Christmas!

Youth Ministry 6th – 12th Graders

Life Teen and EDGE Cancelled. Merry Christmas! The Act of Entrance for 10th Grade Confirmation Candidates will be January 6 at St. Thomas Aquinas and January 13 at St. Cecilia at 10:30am Mass. Contact Zeke with any questions. Please note Youth Ministry’s 5 Things You Need to Know are published biweekly at AnchorAmes.com.

First Corinthians 13 ...The Christmas Version

If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shining balls, but do not focus on Jesus, I am just another decorator. If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not see Jesus as the reason for all I do, I am just another cook. If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home and give all that I have to charity, but do not see Jesus in all these things, it profits me nothing. If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crystal snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir's Christmas Mass but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point. Love stops the cooking to hug the child. Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the spouse. Love is kind, though harried and tired. Love does not envy another's home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens. Love doesn't yell at the kids to get out of the way, but is thankful they are there to be in the way. Love does not give only to those who are able to give in return, but rejoices in giving to those who cannot. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost, golf clubs will rust...oh, but giving the gift of love will last forever.

God's Plan for a Joy-filled Marriage

Are you discerning marriage, seriously dating, engaged or already married? Come and learn. This is a study based on St. Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body. Six Thursday sessions (Jan. 24 - Mar. 7, 2019, except Feb. 14), 7:00-8:30pm in St. Martin Room at STA. Sign up at staparish.net: Event Registration tab.

Gifts for Newborns

Our annual gift drive for mothers who are not quite prepared for their babies, begins on Christmas Eve and ends on the Baptism of Jesus, Sunday January 13, 2019. Donations will then be

supplied to Birthright of Ames, to be distributed to needy and struggling moms in our area. Birthright is particularly in need of warm winter clothing for their maternity and infant clothing room. They need sizes newborn to 2T clothing, blankets, diapers and general baby items. Toys are appreciated as well, as are maternity clothing items. Please no cribs or car seats accepted. There seems to be a higher need this year, as Birthright is serving many more families. Birthright is also looking for new volunteers. If interested, please call Kriss Holmes at 515-292-8414. The gifts may be wrapped or unwrapped and placed under the Christmas tree in the gathering space. Thank you for your consideration of this worthy cause.

With the arrival of the "Light of the World" in Jesus' birth, we rejoice in celebrating Christmas Day. God's power is within our reach to experience and pass this “Light of Christ” on to others who are unable to see it. It is our hope that all children of God might find his light shining brightly in their lives. We wish all a Blessed Christmas and a holy and Happy New Year. From the members of Stephen Ministry at St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Cecilia and Ss. Peter and Paul.

Mass & Other Cancellations

Please use your own good judgment about coming to Mass when the weather conditions are poor. With the exception of truly extraordinary conditions, weekend Masses will not be cancelled. But if the weather causes you serious concern (due to age, physical condition, driving conditions, etc.), please do not take any unnecessary chances. Your safety is important. According to the Catechism: "The faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation [Sundays and holy days], unless excused for a serious reason..."; dangerous weather conditions qualify as a serious reason.

Check the PARISH CALENDAR on the STA web page first - staparish.net – cancellations (Masses and events) will be posted as soon as possible. The message on the church phone will be changed if possible, but expect delays with a number of calls coming in. If ISU offices are closed or classes canceled because of weather, the parish office will be closed, more than likely all parish events will be canceled, but the building will remain open.

Christian Experience Weekend

The Christian Experience Weekend (CEW) is a renewal weekend for adults, designed to enable them to more deeply “experience” themselves and their relationship to God and the Christian community. A women’s CEW will be held at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Ankeny beginning the evening of Friday, January 18 and concluding the afternoon of Sunday, January 20. For more information, contact Nicole Vortherms via email ([email protected]) and/or via phone (515-423-6040). A men’s CEW will be held at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Ankeny beginning the evening of Friday, February 15 and concluding the afternoon of Sunday, February 17. For more information, contact Curt Carlson via email ([email protected]) and/or via phone (515-783-3819). You can visit: http://olih.org/cew-retreats/

The parish Finance Council has better defined the purpose of this fund:

A capital improvement is any addition or alteration to the parish’s property that meets both of the following conditions: 1. It substantially adds to the value of the real property or appreciably prolongs the useful life of the real property 2. It is intended to become a permanent installation The fund is invested with the Archdiocese and any expenditure from the Capital Improvement fund must be approved by the Finance Council (over $5,000 also requires approval of the Pastoral Council). The desired minimum fund balance is $100,000 (presently at $75,600). The parish accepts designated gifts to this fund and supplements the fund with a budgetary donation at the end of each fiscal year. You can contribute by check in the collection, just indicate “Capital Improvements” on the memo line it is also one of the giving opportunities on our ONLINE GIVING page.

10 THINGS CHILDREN CAN TEACH US

ABOUT LITURGY

1. Come to Mass with an attitude of curiosity and wonder. 2. God loves us even if we misbehave in our lives, we simply need to ask for forgiveness. 3. When we are in the church, we are in a special place. 4. We all are God’s children, some just older than others. 5. Make notes and drawings on the church bulletin and then take it home and put it on the refrigerator. 6. If something funny happens, laugh. 7. If something sad happens, cry. 8. Don’t just listen, also look. 9. Sing loudly even if you don’t know the tune. 10. If you don’t understand something, ask someone to explain it to you.
