IMCC Newsletter 37 Friday, 29 th November 2019 Christmas Appeal for Vinnies The 2019 Christmas Appeal has truly been one of the most successful in recent years. Each Care Group from Years 7 to 11 received an empty basket and a list of goodies that were then allocated among the students in the hope that every Care Group could produce a full Christmas hamper. It wasn’t long before hampers were overflowing and we were receiving requests for extra baskets. On Friday, 22 nd November, volunteers from the Clarkson Branch of Vinnies arrived with cars and vans to collect our community donations. Warren, Tony and their helpers, were blown away by the sight of over 40 hampers overflowing with necessities and treats that will now make their way to families who are finding things a bit tough this Christmas in our neighbouring suburbs. What made this year’s Christmas Appeal even more wonderful is that along with the beautiful hampers, we were also able to present Vinnies with 49 $50 gift vouchers. The vouchers will enable families to purchase fresh food for their Christmas lunch, or to buy personal presents that they know their family members will enjoy and appreciate. Christmas Appeal for Vinnies

The 2019 Christmas Appeal has truly been one of the most successful in recent years. The money raised to purchase these vouchers came from a variety of fundraising efforts throughout the year, with three major ones in particular. $1,285 was raised in August from Winter Sleepout sponsors which Year 11 and 12 students collected as a part of their participation, with a special mention to the Class of 2019 student, Annabel Dunn, who personally raised close to $700 of that amount. $675 was raised through gold coin donations on Dressed by Vinnies Day and $492 from the Dance Night raffle last term. A big thank you to Miss Harte and all dance students who contributed items for the raffle. Thank you to every student and family who contributed to making this year’s appeal one of the most uplifting and inspiring initiatives of generosity and love that really embodies the Christmas spirit. Merry Christmas everyone. Miss Cherie Milne Campus Ministry

Year 9 Camino

Last week, the Year 9 cohort attended what was the culmination of their year-long Camino program, a week-long camp to Dwellingup. The Camino program is a values-centred experiential program and journey designed to empower, guide and give permission to our young people to transition towards more adult like behaviours, such as, being more responsible, trustworthy and selfless. Last week’s Camino camp was a huge part of this process. Designed to challenge students physically, emotionally and spiritually, as well as to take them out of their comfort zone socially, the camp saw Year 9 students hiking, mountain biking, abseiling and kayaking their way around the Dwellingup valley. As well as these physical activities, the College also engaged the services of the Adventure Works Team to run a program with our students entitled “Into Adulthood” which, through games, activities and discussions around the fire, led students through a number of conversations on the topic of adulthood. In addition to this, students also carried their backpacks to and from each location, set up and slept in tents, cooked their own meals on Trangia stoves and of course, dealt with the notorious dust and flies of Dwellingup. All of this added up to a truly remarkable, memorable and inspiring week for both the staff and students who attended. I would like to thank the people who made the Camino experience possible. Firstly, to Mr Neil Bright and Mr John Swindells, who have worked tirelessly to organise the camp program. They have developed the Camino to be an outstanding program over many years. To the logistic staff who worked so hard behind the scenes to make the camp run so smoothly, Mrs Karolina Lasscock, Miss Amber Sunderland and Mrs Shirley Nolan, your dedication, time and efforts are very much appreciated. Thank you also, to staff who spent the full five days with students, participating in each and every aspect of the experience with the students, Miss Vivian Bahbah, Miss Shawn Billam, Mr Peter Boylen, Mrs Merryl Byfield, Mr Jeremy Carbone, Mr Corey Chalmers, Mr Anthony Chick, Mr Ben Dyer, Mr Jim Gullen, Miss Sinead Harte, Mrs Inez McGinley, Mr Pat McHale, Mr Alan McLatchie, Mrs Nicole Pearce and Miss Rachael Thomson.

The staff and students of Year 9 this year, as in the past, mutually share appreciation for the energy, passion and service that all give to the Camino program.

Student Camino reflections

When we arrived at school on Monday, we were already tired and not feeling very ready for the week ahead. The energy changed as soon as we got onto the bus, as we sang and laughed the whole way down to the forest. We were all in our separate groups and I was in Green Group. Our days were broken up with activities like hiking, mountain bike riding, kayaking and abseiling, as well as sessions with Adventure works staff and our own teachers. We were responsible for cooking, cleaning, setting up our tents and everything really. Parts of it were hard and challenging but, in the end, enjoyable and fun. I’ll never forget the time I’ve had with you all. Thank you so so much. ~ Lexie The hike was a good experience, walking 8km through the forest with our heavy packs, along and then through the river. It was beautiful but not easy. The river crossing was challenging and some groups fell in. The kayaking was the highlight of my challenges. From crashing into trees, to falling in, it was all a huge thrill. I’ll never forget our week on Camino. Thank you to our parents and teachers for making this possible and pushing us to become better people and having such an adventure. ~ Bailey At the start of the year, I was really worried about Camino. My group didn’t have my friends in it. I thought that would make it really tough for me, but now I realise how wrong I was. My group, Yellow group, was full of amazing people, the staff and students were great. We shared, we laughed, we made a few mistakes along the way, but we got through it. We became a tribe; a community and I am so grateful to everyone and feel confident that every group feels the same way about their group. Camino was great because of the people. Thank you. ~ Kelly I would like to thank all the teachers for organising such an adventure, and for the memories and lessons we have learned on Camino. So many of the lessons learned were through team games. Apart from the competitiveness and fun, we also realised the importance of working together as a community and as a tribe. For our group the campfires, in both the morning and night, were our calm place, where we were open and honest with each other, and that definitely bought us closer together as friends and as a community. Thank you, I’ll never forget this experience with you all. ~ Jake Mr Matthew Byrne Mr John Swindells Assistant Deputy Principal Year 9 Assistant Deputy Principal Campus Ministry
