Do your Christmas shopping in traditional shops and Porto will help you with it! The

City Council and the Associação de Comerciantes do Porto will be offering 20

thousand parking tickets granting 30 minutes free parking for those doing their

shopping in traditional shops. Tickets apply to the following parkings:

Christmas Flavours

In Portugal Christmas is sweet, with lots of traditional desserts that change from

region to region. In Porto it’s possible to taste a wide variety of sweets and desserts,

a challenge to all tastes, some created in convents, other inspired by legends, passed

on from generation to generation.

Bolo-Rei, a symbol of these festivities, according to the legend, represents the gifts

offered by the Magi to the baby Jesus on his birth. A crown shaped cake, made of

leavened dough with crystallized fruit.

Traditionally it had inside a symbolic broad bean or a small object.

Pão-de-Ló, also very traditional in Christmas, is a convent recipe, a very fluffy

sponge cake made of eggs, sugar and flour.

The Rabanadas were created in the mid-15th century during a meat shortage.

People started to soak the remaining bread in milk, sugar and red wine, than in egg,

before frying it, and finally it was powdered with sugar and cinnamon or honey.

Besides the typical/traditional Portuguese products, Porto also has to offer elaborate

gourmet products that, although inspired by tradition, feature new and delicious

flavours.
