Mean annual creek flow – 2.7 GL or 2,700,000,000 litres which is around 1,600 Olympic swimming pools Rainfall dominated storm water flow, with permanent water in lower catchment from a spring

There was 170Tons or around 2,200 wheel barrows per year of sediment impacting on Port Noarlunga aquatic reserve.

It also had the highest sediment load per hectare of catchment according to Adelaide coastal waters study in 2005.

Urban Development occurred over the 60 to 70 years to the point where surface runoff was generating 2,7 GL of storm water. Plus the sediment load reached a peak of 170 tons in 2005 according to the Adelaide coastal waters study.

A NRM task force was set up to address the high sediment load and the taskforce identified a number of issues.

Eventually with 15 million in funding from the National Water commission, The City of Onkaparinga in conjunction with the AMLRNRM proceeded to install two sediment basins west of dyson road, Wetlands off Brodie road and Madeira road Morphett Vale. Retention basins off Bains road and Waverly way. Plus a storage facility in Wilfred taylor reserve that has the capability to pipe treated storm water outside of the catchment.

There is now a 17km distribution scheme to distribute the collected stormwater for the local landscape.

The stormwater reuse distribution network connects, 10 sporting and recreation clubs ,11 council owned reserves.

Plus 12 public schools and four private schools and one golf course and finally a 21 allotment community title development in Christies Beach.

What does it mean to me?

We hold the key to a sustainable place by being aware that what rain falls on the road or gutter is now going to be part of our own local landscape.!

Think about this• We consider our place to be our home along with a connection to the street and

suburb we live in.

• There is also another part of our place and that is the geographic place of the water catchment.

• As there are many suburbs within the Christie creek catchment, there is also a geographic connection between our place and future water quality.

• Because many of our diverse school oval and park landscapes and their green health will soon be dependant on what transpires around our place.

What does it mean to me?

• We try not to harm our pot plants, so try not to harm your local park

Oils and chemicals and our place.

• So, now that there is going to be re-use of stormwater around our place then there is the need to be aware of the implications of any excessive oil or chemical spill that may have on future water quality.

Please clean up any spills

and litter.
