Reflections
Learning to Give Thanks
1 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever.
2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, those he redeemed from trouble
3 and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the
south. … 8 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind.
9 For he satisfies the thirsty, and the hungry he fills with good things.
Psalm 107:1-3, 8-9
Repeatedly, in the scriptures, we are told that the discipline of giving thanks has a powerful effect on our
relationships with God and with those closest to us. From Psalm 107, there is a series of experiences to
free God’s people and to provide for their needs, which results in giving thanks to God. It isn’t that God
needs the thanksgiving, but the process of giving thanks, for past miracles and acts of God’s grace, ena-
ble us to live with confidence for when the next challenges arise.
But somehow we get the feeling that giving thanks is a short, polite responsibility rather than part of a
greater practice. Obviously, being grateful enables us to be more appreciative of the good things that we
experience. However, more than that, we see in the scriptures that practicing gratitude leads to a deep-
er knowledge of God’s love for us, and a depth of wisdom we can draw from when we encounter new
challenges.
For this Thanksgiving, take some time ,when the family is together, to talk about the ways in which
blessings have been shown in the past. You might even review Psalm 107 which talks about having
wandered in the wilderness, undergone times of hard labor and trial, recovered from sickness, immigrat-
ed and traveled over long distances, being rescued in a dry and thirsty place. Each of these encounters
are experienced by all who are related to the one telling the story. This isn’t just someone else’s thanks-
giving, it is the story of all who are a part of the family.
Giving thanks and practicing gratitude is the foundation for a healthy perspective on our lives. We are
the people we are, because of the problems we have faced and the way that God has rescued us.
Therefore, we are able to give thanks to God and know that God will bring us through the challenges
that are to come. We teach those who are younger the knowledge that we are strong through God’s
continued loving care. Through giving thanks, those who have more experience become resources for
understanding how God’s love has brought hope in the past, and in that way, teach the power of giving
thanks as a way to have confidence for the future.
Peace,
Pastor Jack

Coming Up in Worship
11/19/2017
Sermon: Called to be Bold and Faithful
Theme: We are called to be healthy in evil times by being bold and engaged, rather than
being timid and anxious.
Purpose: The congregation will draw strength from using their gifts faithfully.
Scriptures: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 Recognize the evil in the world by remaining awake and
faithful to God.
Matthew 25:14-30 Parable of the talents - the wise and faithful slaves and the
anxious slave.
Question:
In what ways do we need to put our faith into action in order to have a healthy knowledge of Christ?
Is it possible to be loving without doing something? In what ways are each of us able to find God’s
mission and purpose for our lives? What does it mean to us to be “children of the light” living in the
present and serving God? In what ways are those who are serving and reaching out in Christ’s name
better able to cope with the darkness of the world at this time? What happens when we fail to put our
faith into action? What issues and conflicts emerge for those who are not prepared to live out their
faith by showing Christ’s love?
11/26/2017 Christ the King Sunday
Sermon: "The King of Love"
Theme: Those who are submitted to Christ will share God's love with those who they meet
(who are all God's children.
Purpose: To rededicate to serving Christ by serving the people around us.
Scriptures: Ephesians 1:15-23 With the eyes of your hearts enlightened, we submit to the
power and authority of God in Christ Jesus.
Matthew 25:31-46 The parable of the separating of the sheep from the goats.
Questions:
When are we welcoming Christ? What does it mean to us to recognize Christ in those who are hun-
gry, naked, a stranger, and in prison? What is our call as Christians to learn how to put love into ac-
tion? What does it mean to know the power of Jesus in his glory through serving those who are in
need of peace? How do we put this real power to work? What do we need to do in order to be serv-
ants of Christ the King?
12/3/2017 1st Sunday of Advent
Communion, Because You Gave - the Mission and Purpose of our Church.
Sermon: "It's Time for a Light"
Theme: We are seeking light which creates vision, energy, and an announcement of God's
grace in a time of darkness and fear.
Purpose: We will focus on recognizing and being aware of the darkness around us in order to
be better prepared for sharing the light.
Scriptures: Isaiah 64:1-9 Isaiah calls for God to send fire and justice so that God's justice
might come.
Mark 13:24-37 The darkness of the days to come, and the response of keeping
watch.
Questions:
What do we need to learn in order to be faithful through the dark times? What are the sources of hos-
tility, bitterness, and malice in the world that are causing the light to be far away from people today?
What is our call as people of the light in the middle of darkness? In what ways are we called to be
those who reflect the light? What are the signs today of new life and renewal that we may focus up-
on? How do we learn to be aware of the suffering, but people who focus on the light and keep watch
for God’s movement?

Wednesday Bible Study
Wednesday Morning Bible Study has returned! There are two opportunities to
participate. We will have Bible Study, as usual, on Wednesday mornings from
10:30am-noon. You can also join us on the first and third Wednesdays of the
month from 7:00-9:00pm.
For our study we will be looking at the person of Jesus. We will be using N.T.
Wright’s book: “Simply Jesus: A New Vision of Who He Was, What He Did, and
Why He Matters.” The book is available in the church for $16.50. You can also
order a personal electronic version, if you would like.
Through the book, we will look at Jesus in his cultural context and discuss his
role. Through the texts, available in the gospels, we will see that the disciples
themselves differed in how they saw our Lord: as a religious leader, as a
political activist, and as a healer. We will have the chance to reflect on how our
relationship with Christ grows and changes, and particularly why there are various
perspectives on Christ’s life and mission.
This promises to be an interesting and meaningful time of conversation and sharing. We hope you’ll take
advantage of these opportunities to learn more about our Savior.
If you have more questions contact Pastor Jack. The schedule for the class is printed below.

Mat Mission
The “Mat Mission” is still thriving! We
are continuing to make mats for the
Solution Center. The mats are made
from recycled plastic bags (grocery
store bags, discount store bags,
etc.). They are comfortable and stur-
dy.
We have four completed mats on
display in the Narthex. One mat has
been delivered!
Part of the mission of Church Life is
reaching out into the community.
What a great way to be a part of this
calling. Everyone can help!

Worship Team October Meeting
Present: Pastor Jack, Kris Bartelt,
Cathy Wolfe, Linda Dorn
Excused: Mike Frize, Dan Mitchell,
Sara Kamphuis, Katie Johnston
Prayer: Cathy Wolfe (Session Liai-
son) led us in prayer.
Mission statement was shared.
Christians Serving, Learning and
Loving.
We spent time looking at our assign-
ment from the Leadership Team
Gathering.
Brainstorming
Who – congregation, community,
world
Why – build relationship
What – dealing with modern day life
We serve by discerning the spiritual
life of the congregation and the
needs of the world so we may craft
worship experiences that share di-
vine compassion, nurture under-
standing, foster confidence in God’s
loving care and shape vision for
each person’s personal life in Christ.
Assignment for Next Time
What are some of the key moments
or stories that reflect your team or
committee fulfilling these areas of
the mission of the church (reaching
out to the community, supporting the
people of the church, and supporting
distinctive Presbyterian faith?)
What specific plans, goals do you
have for 2018 that fulfill our aim or
mission? Are there new opportunities
or ideas in order to further these
aims or goals?
Creative Arts October Meeting
Present: Pastor Jack, Deb Cooley,
Sara Kamphuis, Jennifer Zander,
Deb Harrison, Kris Bartelt
Excused: Barb Mitchell, Joanne
Marchionda, Kim Braatz, Lynn
Mellenthien
Mission statement:
Christians Serving, Learning and
Loving.
Time was taken to research supplies
and ideas regarding what might be
needed for puppets. Tool belts or
something like it to help carry the
puppet. There was concern regard-
ing strong people to handle the pup-
pets, due to the weight. Three people
are needed to work each puppet.
Puppets could remain in the aisles
and around the church. There is the
possibility for making 2 shepherds, 3
kings and 1 sheep.
Theme for Advent:
Preparing for the Light - Images for
light and darkness. A single candle
image is needed.
For complete minutes please see the website under Church News.
Congratulations -
Congratulations to Jennifer Zander!
She was installed as Vice-moderator
of the Presbytery, on Saturday,
November 11.
Her experience and attention to
detail will make her a true blessing to
our Presbytery.

Advent is a time for waiting and
preparing. We shop, we wrap, we
bake, but how do we prepare our
hearts for the coming of Jesus? Set-
ting aside a time for home devotions
will give you a chance to concentrate
on the real reason for celebration. A
variety of Advent Devotionals will be
available in the Narthex starting on
November 26, for you to take home.

couples and individuals will have the
opportunity to create an Advent craft
to take home, or give away, as a
focus for this special season.

Advent Calendars. Do you know
what a Reverse Advent Calendar is?

from a calendar, you will collect
items for an individual or a family, in
need. We will provide wish lists from

December 17 - Cantata Sunday
10:30am Worship Service
Our cantata is moving right along.
The piece is entitled “Light of the
World” by Lani Smith. Light is a pow-
erful religious symbol that we often
take for granted.
In this cantata we focus on the im-
portance of light as it is used
throughout the scriptures and in the
story of God’s salvation of the world.
It is often in reference to Christ.
We remember the story of God’s
creation and God’s very first act, “Let
there be light.” We recount some of
the important sayings of the prophets
who saw the symbol of light as a
reference to wisdom, knowledge and
salvation.
We tell the story of Christ’s birth and
celebrate with the shepherds and
angels as the Light of the World be-
comes human. Finally, we see new
hope in the world because God has
sent his Son to be our guide to light
the path into the way of peace. –
