Christian Marclay

For this project we were put into groups where we had to challenge ourselves in being in the shoes of the artist that we were chose to research on, and walk in his shoes and look at what he does as an artist/ designer which inspire us as a group to come up with a piece to show to the group and we had only less than two weeks to come up with something that in-spired us that the artist does.

The chosen designer that we had to research on was Christian Marclay.

Marclay’s work explores connections between sound, noise, photography, video, and film. A pioneer of using gramophone records and turntables as musical instruments to create sound collages.

He is often known to sometimes damaging records to produce continues loops and skips. He has been noted by saying he generally prefers inexpensive used records purchased at thrift shops, as opposed to other turntablists who often seek out specific recordings.

Night musicAs this was all group work we all decided to look at different videos on youtube and also other pieces of work that he does and I looked at the Telephone’s, 1995 and reaearched a little more on it and also watched the video.

This video shows a series of different telephones being dialed up with different clips from famous movies and celebrities where the 7 minute video shows a build up with dialing and then soon the phones ring and they are all different types of rings tones from each scene from a movie and then they answer so they dial, pick up the receiver, converse, react, say good-bye and hang up so this all builds up the clip.

Telephones 1995 Christian MarclayAfter gathering the groups research on Christian Marclay we then decided to create a video collage in the style of the telephones 1995.

We had various ideas to where we was going to take this video collage idea, we had the idea of maybe creating scenes of people dying, crying, laughing, punch and slap scenes.

Finally we decided to chose scenes of laughing, so the structure of the video that is going to be created and edited by various laughing scenes from movie clips and by people in our university.

It starts off with a title ” Chirstain Marclay ” then we open it with a question ” Who is Christian Marclay ” then take all the laughing scenes from the films to make out that its funny that you don’t know who he is and this was my job to provide the clips where I searched on yotube for these clips from movies and converted the files. At the end we can just say he is a guy that edits films etc.

Ideas Plan

Our idea is taking christain marclay inspiration film editing and trying to make our own version in his style. We wanted to make a mini documentary based on christain marclay by adding in clips from films and also our own voices to explain who he is and what he does .

I found that the time we had to create this video was not a long time so if we went back to making it better I am sure we could have made it more fun, but overall it was still good because all the laughing scenes bought a good sense of humour to the class and they enjoyed it too.

So this was a video we created to that inspired us to create scenes of laughing, and figuring out who may this person be, because he gets clips from different movies it shows some sort of similarities.

Personal Project

After the group project we then had to go away and come back with our own personal brief in Christian Marclay style,

Because I have already done my research and I also know what I am aiming against so what I have thought about for my idea was to create scenes from various movies where it includes knocking, opening the door, closing the door, seeing who it is at the door, and also theyr reaction. And how bad they want to get into the house and also scenes where they close the doors in their face or sadly just leave.

Software

The software that I chose to use was adobe premiere pro to edit all the clips from movies and gathered them together.

Firstly I wanted to build up the scene by the characters walking towards the door, furthmore the knocking begins and then opening the doors and walking up to get the door also the reactions. So I wanted to build up the knocking and ending it with the doors closing so the whole concept is doors and reactions alongside the knocking.

I wanted to create a collage of different door scenes which dont really make any sense because Christian Marclays work is similar for example his music which may be anoying to some people for example the scratch sounds and by building up tension with the doors i just wanted to show a series of doors scenes opening and shutting to and make it confusing too.
