Blessing of Oil/WaterAssyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the

love of God the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, now, always, and for ever and ever.”

And he signs over the oil in the basin. And he continues: “Let your minds be above.” And they respond: “With you, the God of

Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Israel, O glorious King.”

Page 3: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

And he continues: “Let us confess, worship, and glorify God, the Lord of all.”

And they respond: “It is meet and right.”… And the priest recites this G’hantha of the hallowing

of the oil softly while bowing: “You, O rich in your love, overflowing with your

compassion, kind in your goodness, and ineffable in your glory, our Lord and our Creator and Maker of our benefits, we call upon and petition, that according to your will, O God, the Father of truth, and by the will of your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, there may come the grace of the gift of the Holy Spirit, who is from you in his complete qnoma and a sharer in your Being and in your creative power.

May it be mingled with this oil and may it give to all those who are anointed with it the earnest of the resurrection from the dead, which is for the perfection of the adoption of the sons of your Lordship, and for deliverance from the pains of sin, and for the delight of the heavenly resting-place.

Page 5: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

For you, in the wisdom of your providence, advanced this world through the coming of your Christ to an understanding worthy of your Trinity, and you have renewed it [with] spiritual gifts which are suitable for the knowledge of your faith, for the holy oil which you gave to those of old, that it might be for a sign and for a faculty of temporal priesthood and transitory kingship, you have now committed to the priests in the church that it might be for a sign and a symbol of those who have departed from earthly things to heavenly things in an immortal body and an immutable soul, being circumcised by it [with] a circumcision which is not by hands by putting off the flesh of sins through the circumcision of Christ.

Page 6: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

And may they be deemed worthy, with the heavenly hosts and the saints, to glorify you with fear and trembling, O Lord, mighty God, king of all, crying out and praising without ceasing, calling to one another and saying:”

And they respond: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord, the mighty God, for heaven and earth are filled with his praises, and with the nature of his being, and with the excellency of his glorious splendor. Hosanna in the heights! Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who came and comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the heights!”

Page 7: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

And the priest recites this G’hantha softly: “Then let there be fulfilled even now, O my Lord,

by your grace, by your grace, this great, fearful, and divine Mystery, and may grace come from the gift of the Holy Spirit. May it dwell and rest upon this oil of anointing, that it might give to all who are anointed by it with the life-giving sign, which is in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, complete and true holiness and exalted fellowship in the kingdom of heaven, through baptism which is perfected and fulfilled in a type of the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Page 8: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

For to you, and to him, and to the Holy Spirit we will lift up glory, honor, confession, and worship, now, always and for ever and ever.”

And he signs over the oil in the basin, and they respond: “Amen.”

Then the priest takes the horn of oil from the hands of the priest who is holding it and signs the oil in the basin upon the Throne with the oil which is in the Horn with the Sign of the Cross, from east to west, and from north to south, and says:

Page 9: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

“This oil is signed, consecrated, and mingled with the Holy Oil of Anointing, that it may be for an incorruptible type in absolving baptism, in the name of the Father, and of the son, and of the Holy Spirit for ever.”

And they respond: “Amen.” Then he returns the Horn to him who was

holding it and continues, saying: “And make us worthy, O our Lord and our God, to stand before you without spot, with a pure heart and an open face, and with the freedom of speech which has been given to us by you in mercies, to all together call upon your and say in this manner:”

Page 10: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

And they say: “Our Father in heaven….” And they cover the consecrated basin, and

then go to the Font of water, and with him is the archdeacon, the priest who holds the Horn of Oil, and the two deacons with him who hold the fans, and they stand at his left, another deacon bearing the Censer. And they place the Cross and the Gospel at the East of the Font, above it, until the water is consecrated. And the priest lifts up the veil with which the Font is covered and bows….

Page 11: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

And the priest says: “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, now, always, and for ever and ever.”

And he signs over the water, and they respond: “Amen.”…

And the priest recites this G’hantha of the hallowing of the waters softly:

Page 12: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

By your grace, O our Maker, O our Maker, which is a fountain of living water, the need of your creation is filled, and manifold petitions are offered to you, after which generous gifts come, and from the great riches of your mercifulness assistance is rendered for the refreshment and support of our nature. For you, in your incomprehensible knowledge, brought into this corruptible world at the beginning, and in the time which was pleasing to you proclaimed to us the good news of renewal and restoration through our Lord Jesus Christ, who by the type of his baptism prefigured our resurrection from the dead, and he commissioned us to make, by the Mystery of his

Baptism, a new and spiritual birth for those who believe. For the Holy Spirit, who is from the glorious Being of your Trinity, through visible water makes us new as he wills the worn out condition of our fashioning, placing in us by his grace an incorruptible earnest, who also descended upon our Savior and remained on him, when he delineated the type and image of this holy baptism. And may there come, O my Lord, the same Spirit upon this water as well, that those who are baptized in it may receive power for their help and salvation, that being perfected in body and soul they may lift up to you glory, honor, confession, and worship, now, always, and for ever and ever.”

And he signs over the water…. And at the end of the Canon they respond:

“Amen.” Then the priest takes the Horn of the Oil of

Anointing and signs the water with the oil which is in it, pouring it over it in the form of a cross and saying: “This water is signed, consecrated, and mingled with the Holy Oil, that it may be a new womb, giving birth spiritually through absolving baptism, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

And they respond: “Amen.”

Blessing of the Water/OilBarbarini Euchologian c. 790 CE The Diakonika of the Holy Sabbath at Baptism In peace let us pray to the Lord: For the peace from above and the salvation of our

souls, let us ask the Lord: For this holy house, [let us pray to the Lord:] For the sanctification of these waters by the

indwelling and power of the Holy Spirit, let us pray:

Page 16: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

That the Lord may send upon them the grace of redemption, the blessing of Jordan, let us pray:

That they may be blessed as were Jordan’s waves, let us pray to the Lord:

For the descent upon these waters of the kindly cleansing of the super-substantial Triad, let us pray to the Lord:

That all the powers of soul-destroying enemy may be sunk deep in them, let us pray to the Lord:

That they may avail for the cleansing of the souls and bodies of all who draw and partake of them, let us pray to the Lord:

Page 17: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

That those who are baptized therein may appear as the lights of heaven, not having spot nor wrinkle, let us pray to the Lord:

That we may be delivered, [let us pray to the Lord:]…

[The priest offers a silent prayer for his own ministry while the diaconal litany is being sung.]

And when the deacon has finished his prayer, the priest raises his voice and says:

Page 18: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

Great are you, O Lord, and wonderful are your works, and no words are sufficient to sing your wonders: for by your will you brought into being all things from nothing, by your power you uphold the creation, and you order the world according to your providence.

You have compounded the creation from four elements, and in four seasons you have crowned the course of the year.

All powers and intelligences dread you: the sun hymns you, the moon praises you, the stars hold converse with you, the light obeys you, the depths shudder before you, the springs of water serve you.

Page 19: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

You spread out the heavens like a curtain: you establish the earth above the waters: you set the sand for a bound of the sea. You pour out the air for man’s breath. The angels worship you: the choirs of archangels praise you: the many-eyed cherubim and the six-winged seraphim encircle you, they wing around you with fear and veil your unapproachable glory.

For you who are God, being without bounds, whose beginning is past the power of human telling, yet came upon earth, taking the form of a servant and made in the likeness of men:

Page 20: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

For in your compassion, Lord, you would not bear to look upon the race of humans in servitude to the devil, but you came and saved us.

We confess your love, we tell forth your mercy, we do not hide the goodness of your works.

You have set free the children of our race. You sanctified a virgin’s womb by your birth: the whole creation hymns your appearing. For you, our God, looked upon the earth and dwelt among men.

For you sanctified the waves of the Jordan, you sent down your Holy Spirit from heaven and crushed down the heads of the serpents that lurked there.

Page 21: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

Therefore, our loving King, be present now in the visitation of your Holy Spirit and sanctify this water. Give it the grace of redemption, the blessing of the Jordan. Make it a fount of purity, a gift of sanctification, a way of deliverance from sins, a protection against disease, a destruction to demons, unapproachable to the power of the enemy, filled with angelic power. Let all who seek the overthrow of this your child flee away from it, that we may praise your name, O Lord, which is wondrous and glorious and fearful to the enemy.”

Then he breathes into the water three times and signs it with his finger three times, and says:

Page 22: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

May all the enemy powers be crushed down by the sign of the type of the cross of your Christ. May all aerial and unseen shapes depart from us, may no dark demon lie hidden in this water: and, we pray you, Lord, let no evil spirit go down with him at his baptism to bring darkness of counsel and confusion of mind. But, maker of all things, declare this water to be a water of rest, water of redemption, water of sanctification, a cleansing of the pollution of the body and soul, a loosening of chains, forgiveness of sins, enlightenment of souls, washing of rebirth, grace of adoption, raiment of immortality, renewal of spirit, fount of life.

Page 23: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

For you, O Lord, have said: ‘Wash yourselves and make yourselves clean.’ Take away the wickedness from our souls. You have given us a new birth from above by water and Spirit. Be present, Lord, in this water and grant that those who are baptized therein may be refashioned, so that they may put off the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and put on the new man, who is restored after the image of him that created him: that being planted together in the likeness of the death of your Only-Begotten Son through baptism, they may receive the price of the high calling, and be numbered among the first-born who are written in heaven in Christ Jesus our Lord,

Page 24: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

For with him and the all-holy and good and life-giving Spirit the glory and the power are yours, now and for ever and unto all ages. Amen.”…

The priest bows his head towards the vessel of olive oil which is held up by the deacon, and breathes upon it three times and seals it three times, and says:

Page 25: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

“O Master, Lord God of our fathers, who sent to those who were in Noah’s ark a dove bearing a twig of olive in its mouth, to be a symbol of reconciliation and of salvation from the flood, and thereby prefigured the mystery of grace:

who has furnished the fruit of the olive unto the fulfillment of your holy mysteries, and thereby filled with the Holy Spirit those who are under the law, and perfected those who live in grace:

Page 26: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

Bless even this oil with the power and operation and indwelling of your Holy Spirit, so that it may be a chrism of incorruption, a shield of righteousness, a renewal of soul and body, turning away every work of the devil, unto deliverance from all evil for those who are anointed in faith and partake of it:

Unto your glory, and the glory of your Only-Begotten Son, and of your holy and good and life-giving Spirit, now, etc.”…

Page 27: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

And the priest takes the bowl of holy oil and makes three crosses with it in the water: and he sings Alleluia three times with the congregation, and after this puts the bowl aside.

Blessing of the Font/Water Ambrosian Manual 10th C CE Prayers at the Blessing of the Font Almighty, everlasting God, be present at the

mysteries of your great goodness, be present at your sacraments, and for the creation of the new people which the fount of baptism brings forth to you, send down the Spirit of adoption: that those things which our lowly ministry performs may be perfected by the operation of your power. Though our Lord.

Page 29: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

Another Prayer We humbly ask the great God of eternal

majesty, that through our Lord Jesus Christ, his Word, his Power, and his Wisdom, he will grant remission of all sins in this healthful laver, and give his sanctification to the waters: that whoever shall go down into them may attain the blessing of remission of sins: through the same our Lord Jesus Christ his Son, who lives and reigns with him, God, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, through all ages of ages.

Page 30: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

Another Prayer Let us pray and ask the goodness of God the

Father Almighty that to these competentes, his servants and handmaidens, whom in this hour by the protection of his right hand he has brought to the font of blessed regeneration, he will give the grace of his mercy: that he will endue them with such spiritual perception that they may receive the heavenly sacrament with hearty faith and a sure mind; that to us his servants he will give pardon for all our sins and the presence of his glory, that we may blamelessly celebrate the mysteries of holy baptism;

Page 31: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

through our Lord Jesus Christ his Son, who lives and reigns with him, God, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, through all ages of ages.

Page 32: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

You breathe into the water, and say: I adjure you, O creature of water, through

the true God, God the living, God the holy: who in the beginning did separate you from the dry land, who brought you forth from the fountain of Paradise and commanded you in four rivers to water the whole earth:

I adjure you through our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, who in Cana of Galilee in a wonderful sign did change you into wine: who walked upon you with his feet: and was baptized in you by John:

Page 33: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

who sweetened your great bitterness by the tree of his Passion: and brought you forth from the rock to satisfy a thirsty people: and cleansed Naaman the Syrian in you from his leprosy: and gave you the name Siloam, wherein he commanded the blind man to wash his eyes that he might receive light: who shed you forth from his side with his blood: who said to his disciples, “Go, teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”.

Page 34: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

Be you therefore exorcized and effective to put to flight every diabolic infestation, every phantasm of the enemy: and root out the enemy himself from the servants of God who are this day to be baptized in you, receiving remission of all their sins, in the Name of God the Father Almighty and in the Name of Jesus Christ the Son of the living God, who shall come in the Holy Spirit to judge this world by fire.

Page 35: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

O celestial flood, be sanctified by the Word of God: O water that was trodden by the feet of Christ, be sanctified: though upon whom the mountains weigh down yet you are not shut up: you are dashed against the rocks yet you are not destroyed: you are spread abroad upon the earth and yet do not fail. You are held up by the firmament on high: you wash the whole universe about, cleansing all things yet none cleanses you. You, when the people of the Hebrews took their flight, was held back and hardened into ice. You, melting upon the high peaks, bring ruin upon the dwellers of the Nile, and with your fierce raging every torment the world as it were your enemy.

Page 36: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

You are one and the same: the salvation of the faithful, the avenger of the wicked. Moses struck the rock and the rock poured you forth: the majesty of God commanded you to come forth and you could not hide among the boulders. You are borne upon the clouds and you make fruitful the fields with joyful showers, lest the dry lifeless earth might deny their proper victuals to our bodies. The beginning of all things and their end exult in you, yet rather it is through you we know no end.

For, O Lord, Almighty God, we do not forget your power while we proclaim the merits of water: but in these things we declare the wonders of your work.

Page 37: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

Look therefore with favor upon sinners, and loose the captive. Restore the innocence which Adam lost in Paradise, which his wife let god, which cruel incontinence spoiled. Give a healthful draught to men who are upset by the bitterness of the apple: purge the disorders of mortals and with a divine antidote cure their age-long distemper. Wash away the filth and squalor of the world: make a way through the wall of fire which protects the garden of Paradise, and open a flower-strewn path to those who return.

Page 38: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

May they receive the likeness of God, which once was lost by the envy of the serpent: may the iniquities which follow upon their disobedience be carried away in this pure stream. May they rise up into rest: may they be brought forward unto pardon: that being renewed in the mystic waters they may know themselves to be redeemed and reborn.

Through Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, God, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, through all ages of ages.”

Ordo Romanus XI (c. 700/850)

Here begins the order for the scrutiny of the elect, and the announcement which is first made in the third week of Lent, on the second day of the week.

Page 40: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

1. “Dearly beloved brethren, take notice that the scrutiny is at hand, when the elect are instructed in divine things; with watchful devotion, therefore, let us meet on Wednesday next following at about the third hour, so that the heavenly mystery, when the devil with his retinue is destroyed and the door of the heavenly kingdom is opened, may by the Lord’s help be perfectly performed.”

Page 41: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

2. When they have come to the church on the fourth day of the week at the third hour, as we have said, let the names of the infants and those who are to receive them from the font be written down by an acolyte; and the acolyte calls the infants into church by name in order as they are written: “Such and such a boy”, and so the males are placed one by one by themselves on the right side: “Such and such a girl”, and so the females are placed one by one by themselves on the left side.

Page 42: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

3. And then first of all let the presbyter make the sign of the cross upon the forehead of each with his thumb, saying: “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

4. And placing a hand over their heads he says: “Almighty everlasting God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ…”. And he does the same over the females.

5. Afterwards he blesses salt, in this manner: “I exorcize you, creature of salt…”.

6. And he places some of the salt in the mouth of the infants, one by one, saying: “Receive, such a one, the salt of wisdom, for a token of propitiation unto eternal life.”

Page 43: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

7. Then let them go out of church and await the hour when they shall be recalled.

8. Then a cleric begins the antiphon for the introit: “When I shall have been sanctified in you” [Ezek.36.23].

9. When it is finished he says: “Let us pray. We ask you, O Lord, bestow upon these elect.”

10. And after that he sits in his seat and the deacon says: “Let the catechumens come forward.” And the infants are called by an acolyte by name in order as they are written, and are placed as before.

Page 44: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

11. And then they are admonished by the deacon: “Pray, you elect. Bow the knee.” And when they have prayed, he says: “Rise up. Complete your prayer together and say ‘Amen’.” And all reply: “Amen.”

12. And the deacon says: “Sign them. Come forward for the blessing.” And let the godfathers and godmothers sign the infants on their foreheads with their thumbs, saying: “In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Page 45: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

13. Then an acolyte comes, again making the sign of the cross on the forehead of each one, saying: “In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

14. And he places a hand over them and says this prayer over them in a loud voice: “God of Abraham.”

15. And he turns to the females and makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of each as above.

16. And he places a hand over the head of each, saying: “God of heaven, God of earth.”

Page 46: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

17. And the deacon says: “Pray, you elect. Bow the knee,” and the rest. And the godfathers and godmothers make the sign of the cross as before.

18. And another acolyte follows and makes the sign of the cross on the males as before, and placing a hand over them, he says: “Listen, accursed Satan.”

19. And likewise over the females he makes the sign of the cross, and places his hand over them, saying: “God of Abraham, God of Isaac.”

Page 47: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

20. And the deacon bids the elect to pray, as before. And the godfathers and godmothers make the sign of the cross as before.

21. Then a third acolyte makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of the boys, as before, and places a hand over their heads, saying: “I exorcise you, unclean spirit.”

22. Likewise over the females he makes the sign of the cross as before and places a hand over their heads, saying: “I exorcise you, unclean spirit.”

Page 48: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

23. And the deacon admonishes them: “Pray, you elect,” and the rest as before. And the godparents sign them as before.

24. And then the presbyter comes, and makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of each as before, and places a hand over the heads, saying this prayer: “O Lord, holy Father, everlasting God of light and truth.”

25. And he does the same over the females, and says the same prayer.

Page 49: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

26. When all this has been performed, again they are admonished by the deacon: “Pray, you elect. Bow the knee.” And after a little, he says: “Rise up. Complete your prayer together and say, ‘Amen’.” And all reply: “Amen.”

27. Again he says: “Sign them. Stand in order and silence.” And the godparents sign them as before.

28. The priest then returns to his seat. And the lesson of Ezechiel the prophet is read: “Thus says the Lord, I will sprinkle clean water upon you,” to: “and I will save you from all your uncleanesses.” The responsory follows: “I will have respect unto you and make you fruitful.”

Page 50: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

29. Then they are admonished by the deacon thus: “Let the catechumens retire. Let anyone who is a catechumen retire. Let all catechumens go outside.”

30. And the elect go out and wait outside the doors until the solemnities of Mass are finished.

31. Then is read the gospel according to St. Matthew: “At that season Jesus answered and said, I thank you, O Father of heaven,” to: “for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Page 51: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

32. And oblations are offered by their parents and by those who are to receive them from the font.

33. And let the priest place them on the altar and say this prayer in secret: “O God we ask you, bring your servants in pity to your mysteries.”

34. When he says: “Remember, Lord, your servants, both men and women,” let the names be read of the men and women who are to receive the infants from the font.

Page 52: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

35. Then, when the Hanc igitur has been said, let the names of the elect be recited. And when they have been recited, he says: “We pray you, Lord, for these who are to be renewed in the font of baptism.”

36. When the solemnities of Mass are finished, let all communicate, except the infants.

37. Then the presbyter announces that in the same week they are to return for a scrutiny, saying: “Come on Saturday, gather in due time at such and such a church.”

38. And when they come upon the day, as it was told them, they perform the scrutiny and the Mass in full order, as it is written above.

Page 53: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

39. Again the presbyter announces on what day he wishes them to come in the following week, which is the fourth from the beginning of Lent, saying: “Upon such a day, come and gather together at such a church,” whichever he has told them.

40. And when they have come to the church on the day on which they were told, let the deacon say: “Let the catechumens come forward.”

41. And an acolyte calls the infants by name, in order as before, and they perform the scrutiny exactly as they performed the two earlier ones, to the point where he says: “Sign them. Stand in order and silence.”

Page 54: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

42. And then are read these two lessons for the opening of the ears: The lesson of Isaiah the prophet: “Thus says the Lord, listen and hearken unto me and eat that which is good” to: “and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” The responsory follows: “Come, children.”

43. Then another lesson, to the Colossians: “Brothers, putting off the old man with his doings” to: “Yes, truly their sound went out into all the earth and their words unto the ends of the earth.” The responsory follows: “A blessed nation.”

Page 55: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

44. Then four deacons come forth from the sacristy bearing the four books of the gospels. They are preceded by two candles, with censers and incense. They place the gospels at the four corners of the altar.

45. Before they are read, a presbyter speaks in these words: “Beloved children, we shall open to you now the gospels…Luke, John.”

46. And when that is done, the deacon says: “Stand in silence and listen attentively.”

47. Then one of the deacons takes the book of the gospel from the near corner of the altar on the left hand side and goes up to read, being preceded by two candles and censers.

Page 56: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

48. And he reads: “The beginning of the holy gospel according to Matthew,” to: “for he shall save his people from their sins.”

49. And when he has read it, a subdeacon receives the book from him upon a cloth and takes it to the sacristy.

50. And the presbyter speaks in these words: “Beloved children, lest we keep you too long…person of Matthew.”

51. And when that is done, the deacon says: “Stand in silence and listen attentively.”

53. Again he says: “The beginning of the holy gospel according to Mark,” to: “I baptize you in water, he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit.”

54. Then the presbyter continues in these words: “The evangelist Mark, who has the symbol of a lion…”

55. When that is done, the deacon says: “Stand in silence and listen attentively.”

Page 60: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

56. And the deacon takes the third book of the gospel, according to Luke, from the third corner of the altar on the right hand side. And he goes up to read and says: “The Lord be with you.” “And with your spirit.” And he reads: “The beginning of the holy gospel according to Luke,” to: “to make ready for the Lord a perfect people.”

57. And the presbyter speaks in these words: “The evangelist Luke has the appearance of an ox…four gospels.”

Page 61: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.
Page 62: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

59. And from the fourth corner on the right side of the altar the deacon takes the fourth book of the gospel, according to John, being preceded likewise. And he goes up to read and says: “The Lord be with you.” “And with your spirit.” And he reads: “The beginning of the holy gospel according to John. In the beginning was the Word,” to: “full of grace and truth.”

60. Again the presbyter continues, in these words: “John has the likeness of an eagle…throughout all ages.”

61. And he says the introduction to the Creed: “Dearly beloved, who seek to receive the sacraments of baptism…begins thus:”

Page 63: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.
Page 64: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

62. When this is done, an acolyte holds one of the male infants in his left arm, and the presbyter asks him, saying: “In what language do they confess our Lord Jesus Christ?” R. “In Greek.” “Declare their faith according as they believe.” And the acolyte says the Creed in Greek, chanting in these words: “Pisteuo eis ena theon.”

63. When this is done, he turns to the females and does likewise.

Page 65: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

64. And another acolyte takes one of the Latin infants in his left arm, placing his right hand on this head, and the presbyter asks him: “In what language do they confess” as before. And he replies: “In Latin.” The presbyter says to him: “Declare their faith according as they believe.” And he chants the Creed:

65. “I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of [all things] visible.”

66. When this is done, he turns to the females and does likewise.

Page 66: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

67. Then the presbyter continues in these words: “Dearly beloved, this is the sum of our belief…throughout all ages.”

68. When that is done, the deacon says: “Stand in silence and listen attentively.”

69. Then the priest continues with this introduction to the Lord’s Prayer: “Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ…throughout all ages.”

70. When that is done, let them be admonished by the deacon: “Stand in silence and listen attentively.”

71. And the presbyter says: “You have heard…throughout all ages.”

Page 67: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

72. When that is done, the deacon proclaims: “Let the catechumens retire. Let anyone who is a catechumen retire. Let all catechumens go outside.”

73. The parents go outside with their infants, and outside the doors they give their children into somebody’s keeping.

74. Then they go back into the church, the parents and those who are to receive the infants from the font, with their offerings, and the offerings are made for themselves, while the infants wait outside until the solemnities of Mass are completed.

Page 68: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

75. When the Mass is done, let all communicate, except the infants themselves.

76. Again the presbyter announces upon what day in the following week, which is the fifth after the beginning of Lent, he wishes them to return for the scrutiny.

77. And when they have come to celebrate the scrutiny, they observe the entire order in the same manner as the two earlier scrutinies before the opening of the ears.

78. And afterwards the presbyter announces that in the same week they are to return for the fifth scrutiny, and on what day and to which church he wishes them to come.

Page 69: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

79. And when they have come, they observe the scrutiny in the same way as they did before.

80. When this is done, again he announces to them, as above, that they are to return for the sixth scrutiny, in the following week, the last before the Pascha, and on what day and to which church he wishes them to come. And they complete the scrutiny and the Mass, doing everything as before.

Page 70: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

81. It is to be so ordered that from the first scrutiny which begins in the third week of Lent to the vigil of the Pascha on Holy Saturday there shall be seven scrutinies, corresponding to the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, so that when the sevenfold number is completed there ma be given to them the sevenfold grace of the Spirit.

82. And the presbyter announces that on Holy Saturday at the third hour they are to return to church and are then catechized and make return of the Creed and are baptized and their sevenfold oblations completed.

Page 71: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

83. The order in which they are catechized is as follows. After the third hour of the Sabbath, they go to the church and are arranged in the order in which their names are written down, males on the right side, females on the left.

84. And the priest makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of each and places his hand on the head of each and says: “Be not deceived, Satan.”

85. When that is done, the presbyter touches the nostrils and ears of each with spittle from his mouth and says in the ears of each one: “Effeta, that is be opened, unto the odor of sweetness,” and the rest.

Page 72: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

86. When this is done, he walks around them, placing a hand on their heads and chanting in a loud voice: “I believe in one God,” and the rest. He turns to the females and does likewise.

87. Then the archdeacon says to them: “Pray, you elect. Bow the knee. Complete your prayers together and say: ‘Amen’.” And all reply: “Amen.”

88. Again they are admonished by the archdeacon in these words: “Let the catechumens go. If anyone is a catechumen, let him go. Let all the catechumens go outside and await the hour when the grace of God shall be able to enfold you.”

Page 73: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

89. Then the blessing of the candle is performed. Then follow the lessons belonging to the day, each with its canticle.

90. When this is done, the pontiff and all the priests go in procession from the church until they come to the fonts, singing the litany, that is Kyrieleison: the notaries go before the pontiff, holding on high two light candles the height of a man, with censers and incense, and they begin the litany which follows: “O Christ, hear us” and the rest.

Page 74: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

91. When the litany is finished, the whole clergy and the people stand round about the font, and when silence has been made the pontiff says: “The Lord be with you.” And all the people reply: “And with your spirit.”

92. And he says: “Let us pray,” and recites the blessing: “Almighty, everlasting God.”

93. Another: “God, who by your invisible power,” and the rest.

94. When all this is done, he pours chrism from a golden vessel over the water into the fonts in the manner of a cross. With his hand he stirs the chrism and the water, and sprinkles all the font and the people standing about.

Page 75: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

95. When this is done, and before the children are baptized, everyone who wishes shall receive a blessing, each taking some of the water in his own vessel, for sprinkling in their houses or vineyards or fields or orchards.

96. Then the pontiff baptizes one or two of the infants, or as many as he wishes, and the rest are baptized by a deacon whom he shall appoint.

97. Raising the infants in their hands, they offer them to one presbyter. The presbyter makes the sign of the cross with chrism upon the crown of their heads with his thumb, saying: “Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,” and the rest.

Page 76: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

98. And those who are to receive them are ready with towels in their hands and accept them from the pontiff or the deacons who baptize them.

99. The pontiff goes from the font and sits in his throne which is placed ready in the church, wherever he wishes. And the infants are carried down before him and he gives to each a stole and overgarment and chrismal cloth and ten coins, and they are robed.

100. And being vested, they are arranged in order as their names are written, in a circle, and the pontiff makes a prayer over them, confirming them with an invocation of the sevenfold grac of the Holy Spirit.

Page 77: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

101. When the prayer has been said, he makes the sign of the cross with his thumb and chrism on the forehead of each one, saying: “In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Peace be to you.” And they reply: “Amen.”

102. Great care must be taken that this is not neglected, because it is at that point that every baptism is confirmed and justification made for the name of Christianity.

103. After this they go in to Mass and all the infants receive communion. Care is to be taken lest after they have been baptized they receive any food or suckling before they communicate.

Page 78: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

104. Afterwards let them come to Mass each day for the whole week of the Pascha and let their parents make oblations for them.

105. This foregoing order of baptism is to be observed in just the same way on the Sabbath of Pentecost as on the holy Sabbath of the Pascha.

Page 79: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

The Blessing of Water/OilOld Gelasian Sacramentary 6th/8th C XLIV: Then a litany is chanted while you go down

to the font. The Blessing of the Font Almighty, everlasting God, be present at the

mysteries of your great goodness, be present at your sacraments, and for the creation of the new people which the fount of baptism brings forth to you send down the Spirit of adoption that those things which our lowly ministry performs may be perfected by the operation of your power. Through.

The Consecration of the Font Lord, who by your invisible power wonderfully

effects your sacraments: although we are not worthy to perform so great mysteries, yet do not forsake the gifts of your grace, but incline the ears of your goodness to our prayers.

God whose Spirit at the beginning of the world was borne upon the water, that even the nature of water might conceive the power of sanctification:

God who by the outpouring of the flood signified a type of regeneration, when you by water washed away the sins of a wicked world, so that by the mystery of one and the same element there should be both an end of sin and a beginning of virtue.

Page 81: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

Look down, O Lord, upon your Church and multiply in her your generations, you who makes glad your city with the rush of the flood of your grace:

Open the fount of baptism for the renewal of all nations of the world, that by the command of your majesty it may receive the grace of your Only-Begotten by the Holy Spirit:

Let your Holy Spirit by the secret admixture of his light give fruitfulness to this water prepared for human regeneration, so that, sanctification being conceived therein, there may come forth from the unspotted womb of the divine font a heavenly offspring, reborn unto a new creature:

Page 82: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

That grace may be a mother to people of every age and sex, who are brought forth into a common infancy.

Therefore, O Lord, at your command let every unclean spirit depart far away, let all the wickedness of the wiles of the devil stand far off, let him not fly about to lay his snares, let him not creep secretly in, let him not corrupt with his infection.

May this holy and innocent creature be free from every assault of the enemy and purified by the departure of all wickedness.

Page 83: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

May the fount be alive, the water regenerating, the wave purifying, so that all who shall be washed in this saving laver by the operation of the Holy Spirit within them may be brought to the mercy of perfect cleansing.”

Here you sign [the water]. “Wherefore I bless you, O creature of water,

through God the living, through God the holy, through God who in the beginning separated you from the dry land and commanded you in four rivers to water the whole earth, who in the desert gave sweetness to your bitterness that humans might drink from you, and for a thirsty people brought you forth from the rock.

Page 84: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

I bless you also through Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who in Cana of Galilee by his power in a wonderful sign did change you into wine, who walked upon you with his feet, and was baptized in your by John in the Jordan, who shed you forth from his side with his blood, and commanded his disciples that believers should be baptized in you, saying: ‘Go, teach all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Here you shall change your voice.

Page 85: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

Almighty God, be present of your favor among us as we observe your commands: graciously inspire us. Bless with you mouth these simple waters, that besides their natural purity which fits them for the washing of people’s bodies they may have the power to purify their minds. May the power of the Holy Spirit descend into all the water of this font and make the whole substance of this water fruitful with regenerating power. Here may the stains of all sins be blotted out. Here may the nature which was founded on your image be restored to the honor of its origin and cleansed from the filth of age, that everyone who enters this sacrament of regeneration may be reborn in a new infancy of true innocence.

Page 86: Christian Initiation in the Medieval Era. Blessing of Oil/Water Assyrian Church of the East “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who shall come in the Holy Spirit to judge the living and the dead and this world by fire.
