EXECUTIVE SUMMARY EY EFFICACY STUDY OF CHRISTEL HOUSE SOUTH AFRICA (“CHSA”) MARCH 2015 CHSA retained EY (formerly known as Ernst & Young) to examine the efficacy of its education model. The following findings show that CHSA has a significant effect on academic results: CHSA Western Cape Provincial National Independent (private) schools 3 rd grade Mathematics pass rate-WCED* Systemic test 93% 54% X X 9 th grade Language pass rate-WCED Systemic test 73% 15% X X ANA** 6 th grade mathematics pass rate 66% 51% 43% 52% ANA 6 th grade Language pass rate 78% 65% 63% 42% National Senior Certificate (“NSC”) pass rate 98% 83% 76% 93% NSC Bachelor pass rate (required for university) 64% 39% 28% 85% Tertiary institution enrollment 40% X 16% X Tertiary institution dropout rate 31% X 50% X Nationally, 51% of South African (SA) students drop out of school before reaching Grade 12. CHSA’s cumulative dropout rate is 6% over the span of six graduating classes from 2009 to 2014. SA teacher absenteeism is 10-12% per year. Teachers in the bottom 60% of schools are absent twice as often as teachers in the top 20%. Teacher absenteeism at CHSA is 2% in the primary school and 1% in the high school. After high school, CHSA graduates continue to receive services for up to 5 years through the Christel House College & Careers program, which helps students transition into tertiary studies and employment. 95% of CHSA Graduates are either working or studying. It is anticipated that most Christel House students, if not currently gainfully employed, will secure employment when studies are completed.
