Christchurch at a Glance6
Christchurch boasts a vibrant city with cultural activities, great shopping, dining and attractions.Public transport makes getting around simple. You can reach all areas of the city quickly by bus. Check online at www.metroinfo.co.nz
History Canterbury has a long history of pre european settlement. The plains were an important area for Maori, with Ngai Tahu the major tribe. The first four ships carrying European settlers arrived in Lyttelton Harbour in 1850.
Hagley Park/Botanic Gardens One of the city’s most striking features – an oasis of greenery stretching across more than 500 acres of the central city. Take a punt down the Avon River as it winds its way gently through the park, and stroll through the stunning Botanic Gardens.
Sumner If you love a cosy village atmosphere as well as the beach, you’re in for a treat! Feel the sand trickling between your toes, enjoy fish and chips on the beach, or sip a refreshing ale or wine on a sunny summer day.
BrightonBrighton is another of the city’s seaside suburbs, famous for its pier. Learn to surf, swim safely in patrolled waters, or stroll the length of the pier as it juts several hundred metres into the ocean where you’ll often find families enjoying a relaxed spot of fishing.
Bottle Lake Forest ParkAbout 20 minutes from the city centre in the north-east corner, Bottle Lake offers an extensive playground of cool, forest tracks for walking, mountain biking or horse riding.
Exploring CanterburyExperience the wider Canterbury region with luxurious hot springs, white-knuckle rafting, hot air ballooning, jet boating, swimming with dolphins and watching whales, premium wineries and the mountains of Arthur’s Pass and Mount Cook/Aoraki national parks – all easily accessible within hours of Christchurch.
WalkwaysThere are walking tracks – easy or challenging – throughout Christchurch. From a riverside stroll to an afternoon or overnight hike – Canterbury offers walking for all levels.

Re-CollectionsStories from the storeroomsMuseums hold a diverse range of objects in their collections and the Air Force Museum of New Zealand is no exception. Most visitors to the museum are familiar with the aircraft and other large objects on display. Few may be aware, however, that these large objects represent only a tiny percentage of the Museum’s total collection. Safely housed in the storerooms are many hundreds of thousands of other items which are equally significant to the history of New Zealand military aviation. This exhibition contains a small sample of the wide range of objects held at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand. Each one has been personally selected by a staff member or volunteer for their own unique reasons. Join the Museum team as they share their recollections of some of the Museum’s more intriguing objects, and discover the fascinating stories revealed by them. The Air Force Museum is open daily from 10am till 5pm and entry to the Museum and recollections is free. 45 Harvard Ave, Wigram Christchurch airforcemuseum.co.nz

22 Walking in Christchurch
Christchurch city’s parks and gardens offer an easy stroll on the flat, however there are scenic hill climbs and further afield half or full day hikes for the more athletic. So lace up your shoes and grab your camera.
StrollsHagley ParkThis sprawling central park is accessible from a number of entrances but most commonly Rolleston Avenue and Armagh Street. Seasonal contrasts delight park visitors from a springtime full of spectacular displays of daffodils and bluebells to the stunning autumn foliage. A walk through the avenues of mature trees, shrubs and flowers that meander alongside the Avon River will show you the heart of our garden city. Tree-shaded pathways lead past a large ornate fountain, sports fields and an excellent children’s playground and swimming pool. Summer often sees the park hosting free outdoor entertainment. On the Avon you can feed the ducks, drift slowly along in a hired punt and spot the trout whilst enjoying the park from water level.
SumnerFor some sea air stroll along The Esplanade in Sumner. You can start at the south end by the clock tower and walk to Sumner Beach and Village or vice versa. There is a popular children’s playground at the clock tower end and caves to explore at the Sumner Beach end. There are good restaurants in Sumner village and a couple of beachfront cafes if you feel like lunch or coffee in the sun.
Halswell QuarryHalswell Quarry is a unique 60.4 hectare park, with an unusual combination of recreational walks, historic sites and botanical collections. Important historic buildings from the quarrymen’s days are being preserved and the once noisy rock face is now a quiet amphitheatre facing onto a parkland of short walks and wetland ponds.
Port Hills TracksSome Port Hills Tracks are now open. For up to date information regarding these tracks visit www.ccc.govt.nz
Half DayChristchurch and Canterbury has spectacular scenery and there is no better way to experience it than to go bush and get amongst it. There are many different levels and varieties of walks and it is important that you select a walk that suits your abilities.
Full DayOxford ForestAbout an hour north of Christchurch are a variety of walking tracks and picnic areas One of the most popular tracks is the Wharfedale. Another the Ryde Falls Walk is a relatively easy round trip from the View Hill carpark. The bush is a lush mix of rimu, matai and kahikatea (red, black and white pine).
Multi DayBanks Peninsula TrackThis is a popular track across farmland, reserve, native forest and spectacular volcanic coastline starting from Akaroa. Renowned for its charming accommodation, including a bath under the stars at the Stony Bay Hut. Four days and four nights you’ll never forget. Highly recommended and so popular it is advisable to book well in advance.Malvern Hills WalkEnjoy a one or two day walk through the beautiful Lady Barker Country. A tour of her original homestead, followed by a relatively easy scenic walk (approx 6 hours). Stay at Coalgate cabins and maybe visit the local tavern and bistro.
For more popular inner city walks pick up a copy of the local Council walking brochure or contact our local Department of Conservation office, Christchurch Conservation Information Centre, phone 371 3706

50 Driving in NZ
For detailed information on the New Zealand road code, the official guidebook is available at most bookstores and petrol stations.
Road RulesYou must be 21 to hire a rental car or mobile home, and show a current driving licence and/or an international licence. New Zealand drives on the left so remember to KEEP LEFT at all times. When turning left, give way to traffic crossing or approaching from your right. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a car to wear a seatbelt at all times while mobile. At roundabouts, always keep left and give way to all traffic on your right. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it is hands-free. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffic laws, including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell phones for non-emergency accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle registration number.
Tips for Safe DrivingSpeed cameras are in use on New Zealand roads – take care not to exceed the signed speed limits as fines can be heavy, not forgetting the safety factor. If you notice traffic building up behind you, pull over at a rest area to let it pass. Be extra careful when rejoining traffic and keep to the left. Winding roads, difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow you down, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are 200-300km, but less if you want to stop and enjoy attractions. Ensure you are at least two seconds behind the vehicle in front. There are around 1,500 public railway level crossings in New Zealand, only half of which are protected by flashing lights and bells or barrier arms. The remaining crossings are protected by Railway Crossing and Give Way or Stop signs. When you see these signs at a crossing, always stop when red lights are flashing and if there are no lights, obey the warning signs, look carefully for trains and only cross the track if there are no trains approaching.
Driving in NZ 51
Traffic SignalsRed, orange and green traffic lights are universally understood, you cannot turn left when the stop light at an intersection is red.
AlcoholDon’t drink and drive. The legal limit is 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. For 20 and under it is ZERO tolerance. Random breath tests are done throughout the country and are compulsory.
Seat BeltsIt is law that all vehicle occupants must wear their seatbelts. If you get caught not wearing your seatbelt you will be fined.

Regional Touring Map
Exploring North CanterburyKaikoura sits on a rugged peninsula midway between Christchurch to the south and Picton to the north. The Inland and Seaward Kaikoura ranges form a staggering backdrop to the town, sandwiched between mountains and the sea. Waves rolling in from the deep ocean throw up some of the island’s most consistent surf.Kaikoura’s rich history is tied to the sea. In Maori legend, Maui braced himself with a foot on the peninsula as he ‘fished up’ the North Island. Today, you can find several pa here, the remains of early Maori settlement. Today, Kaikoura is a safe haven for the ocean’s largest creatures, but the first European settlers established whaling stations along this coastline. Learn more about Kaikoura’s early history at Fyffe House, the area’s first whaler’s cottage, and at Kaikoura Museum.
Marine lifeNot far offshore, the seabed falls steeply away into the 2000m deep Hikorangi Trench, bringing an abundance of marine life, including several whale species, within a few kilometres of the coast. Sperm whales live in these waters year round. See these majestic animals from the air or sea, as well as humpback, pilot, blue whales and orca at different times of the year.
Swim with dolphinsKaikoura is home to Dusky dolphins, and the rare Hector’s dolphin. Swimming with these enchanting creatures is a delight! Many people rate it as one of their best experiences ever, and a magical memory of New Zealand. New Zealand fur seals have a colony on the peninsula and magnificent seabirds like the albatross and petrel live here. Kaikoura’s waters also offer surfing, diving and fishing while its premium restaurants are filled with ocean fresh seafood. In Maori, Kaikoura means ‘meal of crayfish,’ and crayfish is the local delicacy.
Fast FactsGetting there Daily buses. TranzCoastal train runs Christchurch to Picton via Kaikoura. Follow SH1 north through Amberley and Cheviot.Driving time 2.5 – 3 hours, distance 180km. Stunning coastal scenery beyond Cheviot.Famous for Year round whale watching; Crayfish

Luxuriate in hot pools surrounded by majestic alpine scenery, and restore body and spirit with a massage and thermal treatment. Around Canterbury
Exploring Banks PeninsulaMillions of years ago, two volcanoes blew apart, creating and shaping Banks Peninsula. Today, the harbours of Lyttelton and Akaroa fill their craters, each with its own summit road running along the volcanic rim, offering sumptuous, constantly changing views over hills and water.Just over an hour from Christchurch, Akaroa is the Peninsula’s romantic centre, where French settlers were the first Europeans to arrive. The distinctly Gallic flavour remains in street names like Rue Jolie and Rue Lavaud, colonial architecture, waterfront cafes, a number of much sought after wines, and speciality cheeses from Barry’s Bay. Most of all it’s found in Akaroa’s gentle ambience and understated flair. Akaroa celebrates its heritage every April in a French Festival, but visitors can appreciate it every day of the year. Akaroa is totally enchanting. Excellent cafes and gourmet restaurants stud the harbourside serving fresh, local cuisine. Treat the senses in a visit to a lavender farm, wineries, cruising on the harbour or simply strolling through the town’s attractive streets taking in the boutiques. The harbour provides opportunities for sailing, kayaking and swimming with Hector’s dolphins, the world’s rarest dolphin.Banks Peninsula is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Throughout the steep pastureland are towering red beech forests, stands of original native bush, seal colonies and nesting penguins. It’s ideal for exploring on foot, whether for an hour or two, or over several days on the southern Banks Peninsula Track. The Peninsula’s many bays each have their own character.
Fast FactsGetting there Daily buses including scenic day tours. Follow SH 75 from Christchurch, through Little River and over Hilltop to Akaroa. The road over Hilltop is steep and windy.Driving time A comfortable 1.5 hours, distance 85km. A coffee stop at Little River is obligatory.Famous for Its French connection and fla-vour, stunning harbour and marine wildlife.

Around Canterbury
Arthur’s PassSet deep within Canterbury’s Southern Alps, Arthur’s Pass has an unmistakeable mountain feel. Roaring waterfalls, deep ravines, snow-capped peaks that dwarf the valley, glaciers, craggy rock faces and braided rivers all combine in this spectacular National Park.Mountains for milesArthur’s Pass offers challenges to the serious mountaineer, and its steep country and network of backcountry huts is a haven for hikers. In winter, Temple Basin provides exceptional skiing.Short walks of 1-2 hours take you into magnificent terrain and afford spectacular mountain views. Especially the dramatic Devil’s Punchbowl waterfall. Strong shoes are essential, as well as jackets; even in summer the weather can change without warning. Kiwi live in the Park, though you’re unlikely to see them, and there’s abundant bird life, including bellbirds and fantails. Look out for the kea - the cheeky, green mountain parrot soaring above you that loves to peck anything you leave around!Greenstone and GoldEuropean explorers learnt of the pass from maori who crossed it to trade pounamu – greenstone – from Westland to Canterbury. Early pioneers built the road in less than a year when the West Coast gold rush struck. Today, the treasures of the Pass are found in its natural beauty.
Fast FactsGetting there Daily shuttles. TranzAlpine train – spectacular in spring. Arthur’s Pass is on SH 73 on the main road to Greymouth and the West Coast.Driving time A comfortable two hours. Distance 150km. The road through Porter’s Pass and Arthur’s Pass is steep and windy. Can be icy and may require chains.Famous for Superb alpine terrain and the cheeky mountain parrot, the kea.

Exploring South CanterburyNamed after James MacKenzie, a 19th century sheep rustler, the MacKenzie Country fills Canterbury’s southwest corner, and lies in the shadow of Aoraki/Mt Cook and the giants of the Southern Alps. The region is the hydro powerhouse of New Zealand. Aeons ago, glaciers carved their way across the land, littering it with lakes and rivers as they retreated. Today, a system of canals, designed and built in the seventies, links these lakes and dams creating energy that fuels New Zealand. The MacKenzie Country is staggering in its scale and grandeur. To appreciate its full extent, experience it from the air in a scenic flight around Aoraki/Mt Cook. Aoraki means ‘cloud piercer’ and at 3754m, the Maori title is perfect for New Zealand’s tallest mountain. For those wanting to get to grips with nature, there are limitless opportunities. Mt Cook national park offers the entire range of alpine activity – mountaineering, glacier exploration and tramping, heli-skiing and ski-touring, including guided skiing on the Tasman glacier. And the MacKenzie Country towns of Fairlie, Tekapo and Twizel provide the base for many more for every fitness level. The region’s lakes offer windsurfing, sailing and superb fishing, while on land you’ll find mountain and heli-biking, rock climbing and hiking. The area is also world renowned as a gliding destination where many world records have been set.Everyone will marvel at the breathtaking scenery at every turn, the surreal turquoise of Lake Tekapo and Pukaki, and enjoy the region’s friendly welcome.
Fast FactsGetting there Daily buses to the region’s major towns. From Fairlie, follow Route 8 through Burke’s Pass village, over the pass and into the MacKenzie Basin and Tekapo.Driving time Distance 226km to Tekapo, 3 – 3.5 hours. Beautiful driving through the towns and landscape of South Canterbury.Famous for Aoraki/Mt Cook, New Zealand’s highest peak; Lakes Tekapo and Pukaki.
