Box 158 Bertha, MN 56437 A Note from Fr. Matthew Crane, our Pastor When we think about what it means to be a human being, we often think of just one human being in isola- tion, and we make a definition like a childhood song: “head, shoulders, knees and feet, knees and feet . . .” That is well as far as it goes, but it also omits the less tan- gible aspects of human nature, not the least of which is the social aspect, the building block of which is the human family. Talking about families stirs people up these days because increasingly, we live in culture of non- traditional families. Instead of a mother and a father and their biological children in a stable, low-conflict relation- ship, there is conflict, or there is only one biological parent, or none, or some redefinition of “parents.” Not always, but more often than not, these non-traditional arrangements cannot be helped, and that makes those who are forced into them feel ashamed. For the things that really make us ashamed are the things we cannot help. And nobody wants to make someone else feel ashamed, so we talk of “many kinds of families” and “the new normal” and “making ‘new’ families.” I do not want to make anyone feel ashamed, but I also do not want to diminish the ideal just to avoid embarrass- ment. When God took up a human nature, he got the head, shoulders, knees, feet . . . and a mother, and a father. Awkward as it might make some conversations, God seems to have affirmed this ideal. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Matthew Crane FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY

A Note from Fr. Matthew Crane, our Pastor

When we think about what it means to be a human being, we often think of just one human being in isola-tion, and we make a definition like a childhood song: “head, shoulders, knees and feet, knees and feet . . .” That is well as far as it goes, but it also omits the less tan-gible aspects of human nature, not the least of which is the social aspect, the building block of which is the human family.

Talking about families stirs people up these days because increasingly, we live in culture of non-traditional families. Instead of a mother and a father and their biological children in a stable, low-conflict relation-ship, there is conflict, or there is only one biological parent, or none, or some redefinition of “parents.” Not always, but more often than not, these non-traditional arrangements cannot be helped, and that makes those who are forced into them feel ashamed. For the things that really make us ashamed are the things we cannot help. And nobody wants to make someone else feel ashamed, so we talk of “many kinds of families” and “the new normal” and “making ‘new’ families.”

I do not want to make anyone feel ashamed, but I also do not want to diminish the ideal just to avoid embarrass-ment. When God took up a human nature, he got the head, shoulders, knees, feet . . . and a mother, and a father. Awkward as it might make some conversations, God seems to have affirmed this ideal.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Matthew Crane
