Dear Friends, Lately I’ve been having a lot of conversations with people around the parish about patience. It seems that maybe the biggest spiritual quandary in which we find ourselves is the battle with patience. We hear things like God’s time is not our time and try our best to be patient. But the fact is we just don’t like to wait for answers to prayers, hopes, and dreams. Sometime ago I quoted the desert mystic from the last cen- tury, Carlo Carretto. He was a vibrant “catholic action” layman in Italy before joining the Little Brothers of Jesus and lived out a life in the desert of North Africa. He’s been called by some the greatest spiritual writer you’ve never heard of. Carretto understood this struggle with patience. After spending twenty years in the Sahara desert as a hermit and monk, he was asked, what was the single most profound thing he heard from God in the desert. His response was: God is asking us to wait; to be patient! I’ve come to admire many of his quotes in my own reflections and I offer some of them here for your use. Maybe you can cut out these thoughts and put them on the fridge at home to come back to day after day in your own reflection. •The night of the spirit is the mature ability of the human being to love God in the dark, to accept the design even without seeing it, to bear the distance without complain- ing, even when love thrusts us towards him until we writhe with longing. •The journey is long and its name is exodus. The exodus is the journey made by human beings to learn God’s tastes by experience. It is God’s school, the apprenticeship of the kingdom, the child’s growing up to become like the parent. •Love is the synthesis of contemplation and action, the meeting-point between heaven and earth, between God and humanity. •God's call is mysterious; it comes in the darkness of faith. It is so fine, so subtle, that it is only with the deepest si- lence within us that we can hear it. •Don’t try to reach God with your understanding; that is impossible. Dear Friends,

Lately I’ve been having a lot of conversations with people

around the parish about patience. It seems that maybe the

biggest spiritual quandary in which we find ourselves is

the battle with patience. We hear things like God’s time is

not our time and try our best to be patient. But the fact is

we just don’t like to wait for answers to prayers, hopes,

and dreams.

Sometime ago I quoted the desert mystic from the last cen-

tury, Carlo Carretto. He was a vibrant “catholic action”

layman in Italy before joining the Little Brothers of Jesus

and lived out a life in the desert of North Africa. He’s

been called by some the greatest spiritual writer you’ve

never heard of.

Carretto understood this struggle with

patience. After spending twenty years

in the Sahara desert as a hermit and

monk, he was asked, what was the

single most profound thing he heard

from God in the desert. His response

was: God is asking us to wait; to be

patient!

I’ve come to admire many of his

quotes in my own reflections and I offer some of them

here for your use. Maybe you can cut out these thoughts

and put them on the fridge at home to come back to day

after day in your own reflection.

•The night of the spirit is the mature ability of the human

being to love God in the dark, to accept the design even

without seeing it, to bear the distance without complain-

ing, even when love thrusts us towards him until we writhe

with longing.

•The journey is long and its name is exodus. The exodus is

the journey made by human beings to learn God’s tastes

by experience. It is God’s school, the apprenticeship of the

kingdom, the child’s growing up to become like the parent.

•Love is the synthesis of contemplation and action, the

meeting-point between heaven and earth, between God

and humanity.

•God's call is mysterious; it comes in the darkness of faith.

It is so fine, so subtle, that it is only with the deepest si-

lence within us that we can hear it.

•Don’t try to reach God with your understanding; that is

impossible. Reach him in love; that is possible.

Have a great week!

Religious Education Spotlight

Students, this week is VBS and you have been

given a head start in what it’s going to be about.

You have read the stories, you have been given

the five daily words, so what is lacking? Yes, the

daily bible verses. Please read and match the

daily words with each bible verse. 1 Corinthians 10:13, Psalm 45:1,

Psalm 33:20-21, Philippians 4:19, 1 John 3:16. We will see you to-

morrow night at SONRISE National Park.

Catechist, past, current and future, time is running out and we want to

know if you have the calling to return or to begin to serve in this

ministry. First Peter states “As each one has received a gift, use it to

serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace.” We have

gifts that have been given to us by God, let them be used in the meas-

ure they should be used. Thank God for your gifts and talents, do not

hide them, share them with the children of the parish, be a Catechist.

If you have not given your RSVP for the “Night of Reflection” please

do so ASAP, deadline Friday August 10th.

Next month we will start registration for RE, each Catechist is asked

to be present to assist in registration when it is your weekend. Please

read parents information for your grade weekend.

Parents, this week is VBS, we would like to have a full house. If they

attend, encourage your child to share with you what they have

learned each day. The last few weeks they have been given some

idea what they will learn and read. Go over the daily bible story,

daily word and daily bible verse and even play the daily game with

them. It’s not only a learning experience for them, but for the whole

family.

Registration for RE will start August 11 after all Masses, and will be

done by grade only: August 11-12: K, 1st and 2nd grades, August 18-

19 3rd, 4th and 5th grades, August 25-26: 6th, 7th and 8th grades.

Paperwork for all new students will be needed at time of registration

for your student’s file (copies only), an official state/city/county birth

certificate (hospital certificates will not be accepted), and sacrament

certificates. The cost of RE will remain the same, $30 each child not

to exceed $90. Payment or payment arrangements are due at time of

registration. This week the RE office will be open during VBS, if you

have questions about volunteering, registration, or even want to visit,

my door is open. Rita Motl, DRE
