From the Pastor’s Desk

This weekend’s First Reading speaks of a beautiful and moving image of God – one I have commented on many times. Isaiah prays, “Yet, O Lord, you are our father; we are the clay and you the potter: we are all the work of your hands.” It brings comfort to know that God the Father is molding us each day into the image of his Son. With his grace, God continues to shape our minds and hearts so that we might become holier, more virtuous men and women. My prayer is that we will be open to such molding and allow God to transform us during this Advent season. It is important for us to consider the ways in which our minds and hearts have become rock-hard, that is, unable to be penetrated by God’s grace. In these holy days of preparation for Christmas, can we allow ourselves to become more pliable clay in the hands of the Potter? This means being open to forgiveness, trust, and the love of others. Perhaps there is a past hurt that still haunts us or a spiritual wound that has yet to be healed. Know that God the Father wants to refine those imperfections. He wants to craft us into a beautiful vessel that is ready to receive the gift of his Son. May the Lord bless you throughout the week.

This week, Christ the King will be hosting our parish Advent mission! Invite your friends to join you for “Set Your Heart on Higher

Things: Faith, Hope & Love.” This three-day mission will be led by Rachel Lustig, President & CEO of Catholic Social Services. Rachel will share insights from her ministry and root us more deeply in the most important things as we prepare for Christmas. Join us at 7:00 p.m. each night: Monday, December 4, through Wednesday, December 6. If you cannot make it for all three nights, then come when you can. We will close the mission with a penance service on Tuesday, December 5. All those in attendance will have the opportunity to participate in the sacrament of Reconciliation that evening. And we will close the mission with a Mass on Wednesday, December 6, which is Father Schalk’s birthday. Cake will be served! (This event is in English.) The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is this Friday, December 8. Our Mass schedule for the Solemnity is as follows: 7:00

La Primera lectura de este fin de semana habla de una imagen de Dios bella y conmovedora, de la que he comentado muchas veces. Rachel compartirá experiencias de su ministerio y nos enraizará profundamente en las cosas más importantes al prepararnos para la Navidad. Parishioners who are interested in helping launder purificators should attend an informational meeting on Friday, December 15, in the church office. We will meet at 2:30 p.m. and at 7:00 p.m. –

Christmas Poinsettia Memorials are a way to remember our deceased loved ones, as well as decorate the church during the Christmas season. If you would like, place a $10.00 donation in an

envelope marked “Christmas Flowers” and include the name of your deceased loved one. Then put the envelope in the collection basket at Mass. All Christmas Flower donations must be submitted by Monday, December 18. (This event is bilingual.) You’re invited to participate in the 2018 March for Life in Washington, D.C. The March for Life is an annual gathering of

hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children who are in favor of safeguarding the sanctity of life. A bus from Christ the King will depart early in the morning on Thursday, January 18. We will attend the Mass for Life in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception that evening. The next day, we will participate in the Rally for Life at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew and the March for Life. We will then depart for Columbus late in the afternoon on Friday, January 19. The cost of the trip will be $100 per person and will include hotel and charter bus fare. Reservations must be made by Monday, December 18. All Saints Academy Catholic School

Happy Advent! As we begin this time of preparation, All Saints Academy is having a blanket and warm sock drive for the homeless. If you would like to participate, just drop off the items at the school office Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Special calendar notes: There will be no school Mass on Wednesday, December 6, because we will celebrate school Mass for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on Friday, December 8, at 9:00 a.m. The eighth graders will be leading the Advent prayer service each Monday during Advent at 8:30 a.m. The school will have early dismissal on Tuesday, December 19, at 1:00 p.m. Christmas Break is from December 20 through January 5.

A holy Advent leads to a joyful Christmas

Why do Catholics bow during the Nicene Creed?

When we proclaim our belief that God’s Son was “born of the Virgin Mary and became man,” we bow out of reverence for the mystery that made our salvation possible (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #461). These words recall

the moment when Mary became the mother of Jesus, who would, “save

his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). This is an amazing truth – out of love of us, God became man, died for our sins, and rose from the dead.

During Advent, we wait for the gift of pure love. Taking time each day this season to create moments of watchful silence and thoughtful preparation will lead to real joy at Christmas. Watchful silence. “For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him” (Psalm 62:5). God does not shout. He speaks quietly and softly, in a “still small voice” (1 Kings 19:11-12). It isn’t always heard in the rush of daily life but in the silence of our hearts. During Advent, slow down, quiet down and listen for the still small voice of God. Prepare. “Continue steadfastly in prayer,

being watchful in it with thanksgiving” (Colossians 4:2). We fall into sin

because our hearts are not continuously turned to

God. When we con�dently turn to him each day, he will give us the protection and strength we need to withstand the darkness of sin. God does not expect us to be perfect but he does want us to be a little better today than the day before. Regular Confession is indispensible.

Celebrate. We were created to have a mutual,

loving relationship with God. In fact, he loves us so much that he sent his Son to show us, tell us, and die for us. Celebrate our love story on Christmas with Mass and joy.

death, St. John studied with the Jesuits in Spain. He entered the Carmelite Order in 1563. St. John led a much-needed reform of the Order, encouraging more prayer and simplicity. His reforms were not always popular. He was jailed in a tower for almost a year, yet some of his most beautiful spiritual writing came from this experience. He was a close friend of St. Teresa of Ávila.

“I am with you always.” Sometimes God can seem distant and silent. Yet, he promised to stay with us always (Matthew 28:20). The same God who came to Bethlehem 2,000 years ago still comes to us now to live in our churches and our hearts. Today, be mindful of God’s loving presence. Ask him to help you grow closer to him.

Christmas celebrates the amazing fact that God’s Son became one of us to win

us eternal life. It’s not always easy to focus on the Good

News while shopping, wrapping, baking, rushing, and entertaining. Try these tips for a more joyful Christmas holiday:

Set limits. Stick to your spending limits when buying gifts to avoid sticker shock after the holidays. Be choosy about which invitations to accept so that you aren’t exhausted when Christmas arrives. Focus on prayer. Whether it’s praying a decade of the Rosary, reading Scripture, or spending time before the Blessed Sacrament in church, daily prayer is a necessity not a luxury. Prepare your heart. Make an examination of conscience and go to Confession. Experience God’s mercy as the priest absolves your sins. Make it last. For Catholics, Christmas isn’t just one day – the season lasts until January. Celebrate The Holy Family (December 31st), The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (January 1st ), The Epiphany (January 7th), and The Baptism of the Lord (January 8th).

Dec. 8 – Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (1854). On this day, we commemorate that Mary was conceived in St. Anne’s womb without original sin. In addition to attending Mass, praying a joyful Rosary is a wonderful way to celebrate. Dec. 12 – Our Lady of Guadalupe (1531). The Blessed Mother appeared as a Native American maiden to St. Juan Diego, also Native American. She asked that the bishop of Mexico build a chapel for her, and had him carry roses to the bishop as a sign. When the

roses were emptied from his tilma (cape), it retained the image of the Blessed Mother. Dec. 16 – St. Adelaide (999). A Burgundian princess, St. Adelaide had to escape from a murderous plot for the throne. She was rescued by the Holy Roman Emperor, King Otto of Germany. She married him and upon his death ruled for their young son, Otto II. As queen of Germany she was known for charitable works, including founding and restoring monasteries.

At Christmas time, we are asked to reach into ourselves and bring out only what is kind, generous, and loving. To help, remember that Jesus came to us out of love and wants us to �nd ways to share his love with others. “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you” (John 15:12). Ultimately, Christmas is about love. Comfort those who suffer. This time of year highlights �nancial struggles and hardships. Offer the gift of love by calling your parish of�ce or Catholic Charities (800-919-9338) to learn how

you can help others in need. Offer the gift of yourself. The holidays can be sad for those who are alone. Spending time with someone else – especially when you don’t have much to spare – is one of the most precious ways to show you care. Forgive. There is no better time to offer forgiveness to someone who has wronged you or to ask it of someone you may have hurt. Forgiveness is a powerful form of love in action.

Luke 2:22-40, Look for the Lord

To the uninformed observer, Jesus’ birth was unremarkable and his family was quite ordinary. When it came time to present Jesus in the temple, his parents couldn’t afford the customary offering of a lamb and gave two pigeons as the offering of the poor instead. As faithful Jews, they did what was required by their faith to thank God for the gift of their child. Yet, when Joseph and Mary presented their new baby in the temple, Simeon immediately recognized him as the Messiah. Inspired by the Holy

Spirit, he prophesied that Jesus was to be “a light for revelation to the

Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel” (Luke 2:32).

Simeon was not alone in recognizing the Lord in the temple. Anna

was also �lled with the Holy Spirit. Her faith in

God’s promises gave her hope. The hope God places in our

hearts gives us a desire for the kingdom of Heaven. The Holy Spirit reveals the presence of the Lord to those who want to know him, to receive him, and to be happy with him forever.

Un Adviento santo conduce a una Navidad gozosa

¿Por qué se inclinan los católicos durante el Credo Niceno?

Cuando proclamamos nuestra creencia en que el Hijo de Dios “se encarnó de María la Virgen y se hizo hombre”, nos inclinamos por reverencia al misterio que hizo posible nuestra salvación (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, $461). Estas palabras

recuerdan el momento en que María se convirtió en la madre de Jesús que

“salvará a su pueblo de sus pecados” (Mateo 1:21).

Ésta es una verdad asombrosa: que por amor a nosotros, Dios se hizo hombre, murió por nuestros pecados y resucitó de entre los muertos.

Durante el Adviento esperamos el don del amor puro. Al dedicar tiempo cada día de esta temporada crearemos momentos de silencio atento y de preparación re�exiva que llevarán a gozar realmente de la Navidad. Silencio atento. “Sólo en Dios descansaré, de él viene mi esperanza” (Salmo 62:6). Dios no grita. Nos habla despacio y con delicadeza, con un “susurro” (1 Reyes 19:11-12). No siempre es fácil escucharlo en el tumulto de la vida cotidiana, a menos que haya silencio en nuestros corazones. Aminoren la marcha durante el Adviento, bajen la voz y escuchen el susurro de la voz de Dios. Prepárense. “Perseveren en la oración,

velando en ella con acción de gracias” (Colosenses 4:2). Pecamos porque

apartamos nuestros corazones de Dios. Cuando nos dirigimos

con con�anza a él cada día, él nos da la protección y la fuerza que necesitamos para resistir la oscuridad del pecado. Dios no se espera que seamos perfectos, pero quiere que seamos hoy un poco mejores que el día precedente. Es indispensable ir a confesar con regularidad. Celebren. Fuimos creados para tener una

relación de amor compartido con Dios. Él

nos ama tanto que nos envió a su hijo para mostrárnoslo, para explicarlo y para morir por nosotros. Celebremos nuestra historia de amor en la Navidad con misa y con alegría.

San Juan de la Cruz Educado por su madre tras la

muerte de su padre, san Juan estudió con los jesuitas en España. Ingresó en la orden carmelita en 1563. San Juan encabezó una necesaria reforma de la orden, alentando la oración y la sencillez. Sus reformas no fueron siempre populares. Fue encarcelado en una torre durante casi un año, pero algunos de sus más bellos escritos espirituales proceden de esta experiencia. Fue un buen amigo de santa Teresa de Ávila.

“Estoy siempre con ustedes” A veces Dios puede parecernos distante y callado. Sin embargo, prometió estar siempre con nosotros (Mateo 28:20). El mismo Dios que vino a Belén hace 2000 años sigue viniendo a nosotros hoy para vivir en nuestros templos y en nuestros corazones. Sean conscientes hoy de la presencia amorosa de Dios. Pídanle que les ayude a acercarse a él.

“Acérquense a Dios y él se acercará a ustedes” (Santiago 4:8).

La Navidad celebra el asombroso hecho de que el Hijo de Dios se convirtiera en uno de

nosotros para garantizarnos la vida eterna. No siempre es fácil

concentrarnos en la Buena Nueva mientras compramos, envolvemos, horneamos, vamos de un lado a otro y recibimos visitas. Aprovechen estos consejos para vivir unas

�estas navideñas más alegres: Pongan límites. Cíñanse a lo que pueden gastar cuando compren regalos para evitar las sorpresas desagradables después de las �estas. Sean selectivos a la hora de celebrar invitaciones a �n de no estar agotados cuando llegue la Navidad. Concéntrense en la oración. Tanto si rezan una década del Rosario, leen las Escrituras o pasan tiempo frente al Santísimo en la iglesia, la oración diaria es una necesidad, no un lujo. Preparen su corazón. Hagan un examen de conciencia y vayan a confesar. Sientan la misericordia de Dios cuando el sacerdote les absuelva de sus pecados. Procuren que dure. Para los católicos la Navidad no es sólo un día: el tiempo litúrgico dura hasta enero. Celebren la Sagrada Familia (31 de diciembre), la Solemnidad de María, Madre de Dios (1 de enero), la Epifanía (7 de enero) y el Bautismo de Nuestro Señor (8 de enero).

8 de diciembre- Inmaculada Concepción de María (1854). Conmemoramos este día que María fue concebida en las entrañas de santa Ana sin pecado original. Además de asistir a misa, una forma maravillosa de celebrar la �esta es rezar un Rosario gozoso. 12 de diciembre – Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (1531). La Bendita Madre se le apareció en forma de nativa americana a san Juan Diego, también nativo americano. Le pidió que el obispo de México construyera una capilla en su honor y como señal envió con él rosas para el obispo. Al derramar las rosas de su tilma

(capa), la tilma reveló la imagen de la Bendita Madre. 16 de diciembre – Santa Adelaida (999). Princesa borgoñona, santa Adelaida escapó de una conspiración asesina por el trono. Fue rescatada por el rey Otón de Alemania, emperador del Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico. Se casó con él y tras su muerte reinó como regente de su hijo Otón II. Como reina de Alemania fue conocida por sus obras de caridad y por la fundación y restauración de monasterios.

Durante la Navidad se nos pide que busquemos en nuestro interior y que saquemos sólo lo que es bueno, generoso y cariñoso. Para lograrlo, recuerden que Jesús vino a nosotros por amor y quiere que nosotros encontremos maneras de compartir su amor con los demás.“Éste es mi mandamiento: ámense los unos a los otros como yo los he amado” (Juan 15:12). La Navidad trata en de�nitiva del amor. Consuelen a los que sufren. Durante esta época del año se notan más las di�cultades y las durezas económicas. Ofrezcan el don del amor llamando a su parroquia o a las Caridades Católicas (800-919-9338)

para enterarse de cómo pueden ayudar a los que pasan necesidad.

Ofrézcanse como regalo. Las �estas pueden ser tristes para los que están solos. Pasar tiempo con otra persona—especialmente cuando no tiene mucho tiempo libre—es una de las formas más valiosas de demostrar que usted se preocupa por los demás. Perdonen. Éste es el mejor momento de ofrecer perdón si alguien le ha ofendido o de pedírselo a alguien a quien usted haya podido herir. El perdón es amor en acción con toda su fuerza.

Lucas 2:22-40, Busquen al Señor

Para el observador desinformado el nacimiento de Jesús no tuvo ninguna relevancia y su familia era totalmente normal. Cuando llegó el momento de presentar a Jesús en el templo, sus padres no podían permitirse la habitual ofrenda de un cordero y ofrecieron dos palomas, la ofrenda de los pobres. Eran judíos devotos e hicieron lo que su fe requería para agradecerle a Dios el regalo de su hijo. Pero cuando José y María presentaron a su recién nacido en el templo Simeón

inmediatamente reconoció en él al Mesías. Inspirado por el Espíritu Santo

profetizó que Jesús sería “luz para iluminar a las naciones paganas y

gloria de tu pueblo Israel“ (Lucas 2:32). Simeón no fue el único que reconoció al Señor en

el templo. El Espíritu Santo también inspiró a Ana. Su fe en

las promesas de Dios le dio esperanza. La esperanza que Dios

pone en nuestros corazones nos inspira el deseo por el reino de los cielos. El Espíritu Santo revela la presencia del Señor a los que quieren conocerlo, recibirlo y ser felices con él para siempre.
