The Lord chastises whom he loves, says the wise man, and takes pleasure as a father does in his son. (Prov. iii. 12.) The son of God also, by the mouth of St. John says, that he reprehends and chastises those whom he loves. (Apoc. iii. 19) And St. Paul teaches the same thing, when he says, the Lord chastises him who he loves, and scourges every son he receives; for what son is there whom his father does not chastise. (Heb. xii. 6 & 7) It is for this reason that all the saints hold for certain, that one of the greatest favors God bestows upon a soul that falls into sin, is presently to chastise him by remorse of conscience. It is therefore a mark that God loves you, and that you are of the number of his elect; because he does not quite forsake you, but on the contrary, invites and calls you at the very time you forsake him. But when a sin is not followed, either by remorse of conscience, or some other chastisement, it is, say they, a very great mark, that God is extremely provoked; as this is one of the greatest chastisements with which he punishes sinners in this life. St. Bernard says, that when God chastises us, it is a mark that he loves us as his children; and the holy Scripture abounds in proofs of this truth. The Lord chastises whom he loves, says the wise man, and takes pleasure as a father does in his son. (Prov. iii. 12.) The son of God also, by the mouth of St. John says, that he reprehends and chastises those whom he loves. (Apoc. iii. 19) And St. Paul teaches the same thing, when he says, the Lord chastises him who he loves, and scourges every son he

receives; for what son is there whom his father does not chastise. (Heb. xii. 6 & 7) It is for this reason that all the saints hold for certain, that

one of the greatest favors God bestows upon a soul that falls into sin, is presently to chastise him by remorse of conscience. It is therefore a mark that God loves you, and that you are of the number of his elect; because he does not quite forsake you, but on the contrary, invites and calls you at the very time you forsake him. But when a

sin is not followed, either by remorse of conscience, or some other chastisement, it is, say they, a very great mark, that God is extremely provoked; as this is one of the greatest chastisements with which he punishes sinners in this life.

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your mercy as you close wounds, cure illness, make broken bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health and deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask this through the Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen.

FOR ALL CHURCHES ~Confessions are heard for 30 minutes before every Mass.8:30am Mass confessions will begin at 7:45am • 10:30am

Mass confessions will begin at 9:45am

INTROIT Isa 48:20Declare it with the voice of joy: make this to be heard, allelúja: and speak it out even to the ends of the earth. Say: The Lord hath redeemed his people, allelúja, allelújaPs 65:1-2Shout with joy to God, all the earth, sing ye a psalm to his name; give glory to his praise.V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.Declare it with the voice of joy: make this to be heard, allelúja: and speak it out even to the ends of the earth. Say: The Lord hath redeemed his people, allelúja, allelúja.

COLLECT - O God, from Whom all good things do come, grant to us thy humble servants that by thy holy inspiration we may think those things that be good, and by thy merciful guiding may perform the same. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth . . .

EPISTLEJas 1:22-27Dearly beloved: But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if a man be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he shall be compared to a man beholding his own countenance in a glass. For he beheld himself, and went his way, and presently forgot what manner of man he was. But he that hath looked into the perfect law of liberty, and hath continued therein, not becoming a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work; this man shall be blessed in his deed. And if any man think himself to be religious, not bridling his tongue, but deceiving his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one’s self unspotted from this world.

GOSPEL John 16:23-30In that time, Jesus said to His disciples: And in that day you shall not ask me any thing. Amen, amen I say to you: if you ask the Father any thing in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto you have not asked any thing in my name. Ask, and you shall receive; that your joy may be full. These things I have spoken to you in proverbs. The hour cometh, when I will no more speak to you in proverbs, but will shew you plainly of the Father. In that day you shall ask in my name; and I say not to you, that I will ask the Father for you: For the Father himself loveth you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again I

leave the world, and I go to the Father. His disciples say to him: Behold, now thou speakest plainly, and speakest no proverb. Now we know that thou knowest all things, and thou needest not that any man should ask thee. By this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

OFFERTORY Ps 65:8-9; 65:20O bless our God, ye Gentiles: and make the voice of his praise to be heard. Who hath set my soul to live: and hath not suffered my feet to be moved: Blessed be God, who hath not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me, allelúja.

SECRET - Receive, O Lord, the prayers of thy faithful with offerings of victims, that by these services of pious devotion we may pass to heavenly glory.Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth . . .

COMMUNION Ps 95:2Sing ye to the Lord and bless his name: shew forth his salvation from day to day, allelúja, allelúja.

POST COMMUNION - Grant us, O Lord, fed with the virtue of a heavenly table, to desire what is right, and to gain what we desire. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth . . .

Gospel Readings for the Week Monday, May 7, 2018John 15:1-7In that time, Jesus said to his disciples: I am the true vine; and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me, that beareth not fruit, he will take away: and every one that beareth fruit, he will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now you are clean by reason of the word, which I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine: you the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch, and shall wither, and they shall gather him up, and cast him into the fire, and he burneth. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will, and it shall be done unto you.

Tuesday, May 8, 2018 John 16:23-30In that time, Jesus said to His disciples: And in that day you shall not ask me any thing. I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again I leave the world, and I go to the Father. His disciples say to him: Behold, now thou speakest plainly, and speakest no proverb. Now we know that thou knowest all things, and thou needest not that any man should ask thee. By this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

Wednesday, May 9, 2018John 17:1-11.At that time, raising His eyes to heaven, Jesus said, Father, the hour has come! Glorify Your Son, that Your Son may glorify You, even as You have given Him power over all flesh, in order that to all You have given Him He may give everlasting life. Now this is everlasting life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Him Whom You have sent, Jesus Christ. I have glorified You on earth; I have accomplished the work that You have given Me to do. And now You, Father, glorify Me with Yourself, with the glory that I had with You before the world existed. I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, and You have given them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they have learnt that whatever You have given Me is from You; because the words that You have given Me I have given to them. And they have received them, and have known of a truth that I came forth from You, and they have believed that You did send Me. I pray for them; not for the world do I pray, but for those whom You have given Me, because they are Yours; and all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I am glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I am coming to You.

Thursday, May 10, 2018Mark 16:14-20At length he appeared to the eleven as they were at table: and he upbraided them with their incredulity and hardness of heart, because they did not believe them who had seen him after he was risen again. And he said to them: Go ye into the whole world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved: but he that believeth not shall be condemned. And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name they shall cast out devils: they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they shall drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt

them: they shall lay their hands upon the sick, and they shall recover. And the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God. But they going forth preached every where: the Lord working withal, and confirming the word with signs that followed.

Friday, May 11, 2018John 14:1-13At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house there are many mansions. Were it not so, I should have told you, because I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I am coming again, and I will take you to Myself; that where I am, there you also may be. And where I go you know, and the way you know. Thomas said to Him, Lord! we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way? Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Me. If you had known Me, you would also have known My Father. And henceforth you do know Him, and you have seen Him. Philip said to Him, Lord, show us the Father and it is enough for us. Jesus said to him, Have I been so long a time with you, and you have not known Me? Philip, he who sees Me sees also the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I speak not on My own authority. But the Father dwelling in Me, it is He Who does the works. Do you believe that I am in the Father and the Father in Me? Otherwise believe because of the works themselves. Amen, amen, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he shall do, and greater than these he shall do, because I am going to the Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do.

Saturday, May 12, 2018John 4:46 - 53.At that time, there was a certain royal official whose son was lying sick at Capharnaum. When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea into Galilee, he went to him and besought Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. Jesus therefore said to him, Unless you see signs and wonders, you do not believe. The royal official said to Him, Sir, come down before my child dies. Jesus said to him, Go your way, your son lives. The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and departed. But even as he was now going down, his servants met him and brought word saying that his son lived. He asked of them therefore the hour in which he had got better. And they told him, Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him. The father knew then that it was at that very hour in which Jesus had said to him, Your son lives. And he himself believed, and his whole household.

2018CatholicFaithAppeal

YOUR GIFT TO THE CATHOLIC FAITH APPEAL extends your generosity beyond your parish to reach those in our larger Catholic family. Christ the King receives full credit for your gift. Once our goal has been reached, the parish receives a portion of the “over goal” gifts for our own essential needs. The 2018 CFA pledge cards are available in the vestibule.
