† FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT†
When we read the gospel today and hear about the raising of Lazarus from the dead, we think only of a physical death and we reflect on this gospel using that image. Pope Francis asks us to think about it from a different and more personally challenging point of view. According to John’s gospel, when Jesus went to Lazarus’ tomb, he asked that the stone sealing the entrance be taken away. He then cried out in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus come out!’ And, the dead man came out. According to Pope Francis, Jesus is saying the same thing to us, “because we’re all marked by death” and sin. “All of us have some areas, some parts of our hearts that are not alive, that are a little dead and other people have a lot of their heart that’s dead—a real spiritual necrosis!” It would seem that the ‘tomb’ could be a heart filled with self-ishness and indifference towards others; that is, void of love. The spiritual death that plagues many of us can be seen as we turn out backs on our neighbors in need. Are we building a tomb? Reflection: How are you trapped in a tomb of sin? What can you do to “come out” as Jesus commands this Lent? Kathy Langer Director of Social Concerns Catholic Charities of the St. Cloud Diocese
