"What Are You Waiting For?"

Some of my favorite Christmas memories involve waiting and the anticipation that follows. I would think about all of the presents I might get, whether it would snow, and how I would have a whole week with no school! Talk about excitement! It was nearly impossible to fall asleep on Christmas Eve. I was so convinced that something incredible was waiting once I woke up on Christmas Morning.

I think for all of us, no matter how young or old we are, Christmas and Advent are all about waiting. What I mean is that we join with those Old Testament believers in their anticipation of God fulfilling His promises. The benefit that we have is that we know that Jesus is the fulfillment of all of God’s promises. We know that Jesus is our hope. So, in that regard, our waiting is over. We get to enjoy what those God’s people of old longed to see. And yet there is more waiting for us.

As believers, we wait for Jesus return in glory. We await him to judge the living and the dead and to bring the kingdom of God, a new heaven and a new earth - the home of righteousness! Trusting in God, we live each day in anticipation of that great day. This waiting gives us hope. The joy of knowing that Jesus will return gives us strength and encourages us as we face life's daily challenges. We don't give up. We wait.

This Advent, we will be zooming in on waiting. In fact, our Advent Sermon series is called "What are you waiting for?" If you stop and think about it, we

wait all of the time. During times of uncertainty and struggle, we wait to see how things will turn out. This holiday season, many will wait for packages to arrive, for family to fly in to the airport, or for test results from the doctor. Waiting is a part of living and yet there is another kind of waiting that were going to talk about. We need to ask what we are waiting for when it comes to responding to the Gospel. When it comes to living for Jesus - what are we waiting for? Are we putting off getting serious about our faith and bringing this good news to others? What are we waiting for?

My prayer is that we join the Angels as they sing and tell the good news that Jesus is here! He has defeated sin and death and anything that would separate us from God. Let's join the shepherds in going and telling the good news about Jesus. You see, God gives us the words to say and the strength to endure. He opens all kinds of doors of opportunity to impact peoples' lives. So, the question is not whether or not we are able - no, the question is "What are we waiting for?" Have a blessed Advent and Christmas and a Happy New Year!

In the last two months I have talked about Christ

Memorial’s Vision and Mission.

In the business world companies establish and devel-

op their business plans to achieve their goals, often

in a dynamic complex environment. A big part of

that process is listening.

Each of us, in our walk with the Lord, can pray and

listen to Jesus’ message. He comes to us in our

family, with our friends, where we work live and

play.

The advent of instant news widely distributed,

with no filters and sometimes no boundaries can

overwhelm good sense and decency. Sometimes we

just want to say, enough: What would Jesus say?

Our churches have often been safe havens for our

families. A place where God’s Love shows through.

And as we take that Love home to our families we

can make a difference, in what seems like a crazy

world.

And as we talked last month, we can identify and

support those activities which nourish.

Blessings as 2019 ends with the wonderful Advent

and Christmas Season.

Our 2020 Elections Will Be in January!

It is December and therefore

nominating season. So you are

not caught like a deer in the

headlights when the nominating

committee asks you, think about

what you would like to do in the

greater congregation!

There are about 24 elected vacancies, for which we

have 8 names already. That leaves 16 (mostly board

positions) to be filled. (There are 5 officers and 13

boards averaging 3 per board for a total 42 elected

positions – see the list on the bulletin board at the top

of the stairs if you are interested or read the bylaws

on-line.)

In addition to the elected positions, there are

appointed and task related committees in many areas.

We need a couple of ladies and a couple of younger

people to help on the nominating committee. Please

reach out to Rob Hall or Joel McFadden if you would

like to volunteer.

The congregation doesn’t fully function unless we

have people to support kitchen events, altar guild,

choir, ushering, youth and family events, Sunday

school teachers and superintendent, community

outreach, attendance recording, and a range of other

volunteer functions.

Prayerfully consider what you can do.

It Was so Simple

What Christian ever tires of hearing the Christmas story? First we hear about the Angel Gabriel. He was a busy guy, delivering messages from God. He must have enjoyed this task, though, because he was bringing good news. To Mary he said, “You’re going to have a son, and you shall call His name Jesus.” To Joseph, who understandably was a little unsure of how to proceed with Mary, Gabriel said, “Don’t worry Joseph. This is God’s doing. Mary’s going to have God’s Son.” Simple, right? Just follow God’s plan.

Then there’s a decree from Caesar Augustus. He had no idea he was just a pawn in God’s hands. As the powerful ruler he was, he issued a decree: “Everybody has to go to his hometown to be registered for the census.” And everybody went, including Joseph and Mary. Even though Mary’s pregnancy was quite advanced, she went on that arduous trip. Why not? She was in God’s hands, too, although far from a pawn. She was God’s channel. Through her God would bring to earth the greatest gift ever received.

Just in time, the innkeeper said they could stay in his barn – just in time for the birth. No hospital and no neonatal unit – God brought His Son into this world.

Some poor shepherds were out in the fields that night, just like most nights. But it wasn’t like most nights, for the night sky filled with light as angels appeared and “the glory of the Lord shone around them” (Luke 2:9). Those shepherds looked and listened, and then they acted. “Let’s go see what God’s been doing in Bethlehem,” they said to each other, and they went. And they believed, and they told others what they had seen and heard and now believed.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Not complicated like the world is today? Not exactly true. The world was complicated then, too. Political intrigue abounded; wars were being fought; the greedy still coveted more and more; some people then, as now, were too busy to see the angels or hear their message. But not everyone! Then as now, some will put aside the hustle and clamor. We’ll slow down and listen for angels’ wings, and we’ll hear the message of “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased!” (Luke 2:14). We’ll take time to peek into the manger and worship God’s Son and we’ll eagerly “[make] known the saying that [has] been told [us] concerning this Child” (Luke 2:17). Prayer: Lord, open my eyes and heart so that I can truly appreciate the gift of Your Son Jesus. Thank You for including me in Your plans. In Your name I pray. Amen Blessings on your stewardship journey!

Our Midweek Advent Services will be held on December 4, 11, and 18 at 2 PM and 6:45 PM. Offerings from these services will go to missions and be matched from the Baker Mission Fund.

A Savior, which is Christ the Lord!

As we celebrate the wonder of His birth in Bethlehem, celebrate your rebirth into eternal life.

The everlasting gift was the sole purpose of entering our sin-filled world.

Receive His gift of salvation with joy and thanksgiving. Take the time reading and studying

His Word to explore the vast dimensions of His

Love. Allow thankfulness to flow freely from your

heart in response to His glorious gift of Eternal Life.

Show your love for others, by putting The Great Commission into action

as Jesus instructed in Matthew 28:19-20, “Go therefore and make

disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of

the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have

commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the

age.”

you have been thinking about establishing a charitable trust, adding to

one, or contributing appreciated assets to any charity, you should

contact your tax planning professional immediately.

If your plans include transfers to the congregation, please contact

Financial Secretary, Jane Hall for any needed details. Most transfers

need more than a week to complete.

BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING!

We continue to feel blessed when volunteering at our

“new” warehouse. The loading docks, drive in delivery,

bathrooms, lighting, heating and kitchen and most

important our volunteers and pleasant landlord provide a

joyful experience each Wednesday from 10am to

2:30pm. We have also been blessed with a number of

students from Lincoln University. The students are

required to have a certain amount of community service

hours to graduate. These young people have been a joy

to work with as we experience potential future leaders.

On December 11th starting at 9am we will be loading a

40ft container from our Jennersville warehouse for a

mission in Ukraine. They have received Orphan Grain

Train containers in the past and the need is quite great in

that area. We had a Kids Against Hunger packing event

in November where we packed over

20,000 meals destined for Ukraine.

Although the turnout for packing was

not that great, other volunteers from

KAH helped to complete the project.

Along with the food will be

medical equipment, men’s, women’s, and children’s

clothing and 400 pair of shoes donated by the Dansko

shoe company. Come out and enjoy the challenge of

loading a 40ft container. No experience necessary!

Shipping is our greatest expense. International charges

range from $5,000 to $12,000 depending on destination.

Most are in the $8,000 to $10,000 range. This is the

foremost reason for our current Grant Matching fund

raising program. We are very blessed to have two

people each donate $5,000 for a total of $10,000 to be

matched. When the $10,000 is contributed from our

donors we will be given the matching $10,000 for a total

of $20,000. This amount will allow for two to four

shipments. In addition of course there is warehouse rent

and a few supplies. The final date for the matching

program is December 8th. If you haven’t already

contributed, please consider a contribution which will

be doubled with the Matching Grant.

Due to the opportunities afforded us to help the needy,

we are considering opening our warehouse in

Jennersville on two Saturday mornings starting in

January. Also many working people have asked for the

opportunity to volunteer on Saturday mornings.

Tentative Saturdays are January 11th and 25th from

about 9:30 to 12:30 or whatever portion of that time

volunteers wish to come. We will have further

information as the time approaches. Car pooling may be

a possibility depending on location. Keep tuned in!

What is it that you no longer need or use? There’s

probably clothing and shoes which have “shrunk” and

no longer fit or have not been worn in years. These can

be used by needy people worldwide. We sort and pack

them and they find a good home.

And what about that bicycle

which you or your children no

longer use? We have a bicycle

“expert” who will pick up your

bicycle, assure it is in good

condition and prepare it for shipment. 42 bicycles went

to Haiti, and we have a number for Ukraine. They are a

blessing to needy people in poor areas.

Pre-School & Kindergarden News Jodi Merow

December is a joyful month at

Christ Memorial Lutheran

School! The children are ex-

cited about the birthday of Jesus and they have been

preparing songs to sing in His honor. We invite you

to our Christmas Programs on December 16 and 17 at

6:30 PM in the sanctuary. Hearing the children sing,

with the truest of hearts, will surely be a wonderful

way to begin your Christmas celebration! The

Kindergarten will be using their new handbells, which

were donated to our music program by a very

generous church member.

We have also been busy

serving others during this

beautiful season of joy.

The children and families

brought back 95 boxes

for Operation Christmas

Child.

The children and their families also provided gifts for

the children of Young Lives. Thank you to all the

church members who helped us with our service

activities.

I would like to thank the congregation for welcoming

the children, staff and families of CMLS to the Live

Nativity and to the Christmas Eve children’s service!

What wonderful opportunities for the children to

celebrate Jesus with all of you!

I am very pleased to tell you that we have purchased a

new playset for our playground! The old wooden set

will be taken down in the next few months and a new

playset will be constructed. We were so thankful to

have Kyle Wenger from Amish Direct Playsets come

and see our grounds and design us a special playset

which will be handicap accessible so all children can

feel the freedom to enjoy it! Thank you to VBS for

using their Thursday evening offerings a few years

ago to help us get started. Thank you also to the

families who donated funds!

On behalf of the children, staff and families of

CMLS, I want to thank you for the love and support

you give to us and to wish you a Merry Christmas and

a Happy and Healthy New Year. We appreciate you

all so very much!

We will need many volunteers to help direct the public, dress up as characters, hand our

refreshments and assist with the craft. This will be a wonderful outreach event

so prayerfully consider ways you can volunteer!

On the afternoon of Saturday, December 7th, we will be hosting a Meet & Greet. This will be a special event

in the afternoon from 2-4pm where the children can “meet and greet” the Nativity characters and animals.

The Meet & Greet will happen rain or shine since it will be inside.

To make this event happen...we NEED you!

During the evening hours, we will have our traditional Drive-thru. From 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm, we will need

more volunteers to fill the character roles, people to direct traffic, to help dress the characters and to hand

out hot chocolate and snacks.

The mission of the John James Audubon Center is to educate and inspire people to cherish and protect the natural world, by preserving Audubon’s artistic, scientific, and historic legacy. The program will be on Audubon, the museum and include a live bird. Also, there will be a drawing for two free tickets to the museum. Please join us for this special event.

The Advent wreath is a Christian tradition that symbolizes the passage of the four weeks of Advent (Advent in Latin means “coming” and during this time we prepare for the coming of Jesus). The wreath is made of a circle of evergreen branches laid flat to symbolize eternal life.

Four candles, three purple (or blue) and one pink stand in the circle and each one represents one of the four Sundays of Advent. In the center of the circle is a fifth white candle, the Christ Candle, which is lit on Christmas Day (or Eve).

The first Sunday we light a purple (or blue) candle. The color purple is a liturgical color that signifies a time of prayer, penance, and sacrifice. Some churches use the color blue instead of purple which represents a time of hope and waiting. The first candle of advent symbolizes hope. It is sometimes called the “Prophecy Candle” in remembrance of the prophets, especially Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ. It represents the expectation felt in anticipation of the coming Messiah.

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14

The second candle, also purple (or blue) , represents peace. It is called the “Bethlehem Candle” as a reminder of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem.

The third candle is pink and symbolizes joy. It is pink because rose is a liturgical color for joy. The third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday named for the Introit "Gaudete in Domino semper" ("Rejoice in the Lord always"). The third candle is also called the “Shepard’s Candle” and is meant to remind us of the joy that the world experienced at the birth of Jesus.

On the fourth week of Advent, we light the final purple (or blue) candle to represents love. Advent is a time for kindness, thinking of others, and sharing with others. It is a time to love as God loved us by giving us his most precious gift. From the Gospel of John we hear: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16-17

This fourth candle is also the “Angel’s Candle,” The angels announced the good news of a Savior! “…I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord” Luke 2:10b-11 God sent his only Son to earth to save us, because he loves us!

On Christmas Eve and Christmas, we light the center white candle called the “Christ Candle”. The white candle reminds us that Jesus is the spotless lamb of God, sent to wash away our sins. His birth was for his death, his death was for our birth! “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!‘” John 1:29

It's Bright in Here!

The work of converting the lights in the entire church to more energy efficient LEDs

is continuing. In the last month or so, most of the classrooms, the narthex, and the

balcony have been completed. This has resulted in significant savings on our

electric bill each month. Please thank Steve Schumm and Bhanu Vunnam who did most of

the installation work. There are still 2 classrooms and the Fellowship Hall which need to be

completed. If you wish to contribute toward the project, please designate your gift to

Improvement Fund - Lights. Average cost of a light is $60,

were greatly appreciated.

Angel Tree Once again this Christmas, we will be helping families in our communities. The Christmas Angel Tree is up in the Great Room. Select a tag or two and join in the spirit of Christmas by giving. When you take a tag, make sure to sign the sheet next to the name of the tag.

Beth Moore’s Daniel (Part 2 of the Study)- This study is a

continuation of Daniel. The prophet Daniel faced unbelievable

pressures—to compromise his faith, to live in a hostile culture,

and to confront temptations and threats. Today, believers face

many of the same trials. This study examines how believers can

develop integrity in our modern-day Babylon, and then explores

prophecies from the time of Daniel through the second coming of

A Savior Is Born - It's one of the most familiar stories in human

history: the birth of Jesus in a lowly manger in Bethlehem. A

Savior, which is Christ the Lord. Yet, how can we prepare our

hearts to celebrate the birth of our Savior in our frantic,

consumer-driven society? How do we make sure the Christmas

holiday remains a Holy Day? In this Bible study, you will

experience cinematic short films that capture events surrounding

the birth of Jesus Christ. Then we will examine scripture to bring us

M.I.G.H.T. (Men in God’s Hands Together)

(Men’s Saturday Bible Study; 8am-9:30am Saturday’s in the Library) – Please

join us for a dynamic discussion of books of the Bible and Christian topics.

Our studies range from 3-4 weeks video-based studies from sources such as

Luther Hour Ministries, Concordia Publishing, and Right Now Media to reading books of the Bible together

and discussing what they means to us. There is never a bad time to join so please take this opportunity to be

in fellowship with Christian men who each have their own unique experiences and questions about scripture

to share with each other to gain deeper understanding. You need not be a member of our church; you and

any friend(s) you choose to bring are always welcome.

LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League)

The LWML Bible Study meets Thursday morning in the church library at 9:30 am for fellowship

and 10:00-11:30 for study and prayer. On December 5th and 12th, we will view the movie,

“The Nativity Story”. December 19th will be our Christmas party at the home of Dorothy

Koschmann. January 9th, we will start the study by Donna Pyle, “No Stranger in the Manager”. All

Women Tuesday Evening Bible Study

A Tuesday evening Bible Study for all women. Come to the Great Room at 7:00 pm for an opportunity to get together and share God’s Word. We will meet every Tuesday except when there is a Women Guild meeting. Our current study is “Breathing Room for Women” by Sandra Stanley. Do you ever feel like you don't enjoy anything because you're trying to do everything? You're filling your calendar, draining your bank account, and multitasking your way through life. You're efficient . . . but exhausted. You just need a little bit of breathing room. With one surprisingly simple invitation, God offers a way to trade your overwhelming pace for one that will finally bring you peace. This study will show you how.

L.I.G.H.T. (Ladies in God’s Hands Together) - We would like to invite women of any age and any stage of their faith walk to join us. We begin in the library at 9:00 am with fellowship, including coffee and snacks. We will then break into our bible study groups. Once again, we will be offering two classes.

This study guides you through the Bible chronologically while connecting New and Old Testament passages together in daily reading. Included are study questions, videos, maps, and more so that you can go beyond merely reading the Bible to experiencing the life in its pages.

Journey into God’s Word to discover the fullness and freedom you can experience as a woman and as a mother. You will find the source to fill your “love bucket”, recognize common mothering traps and deal decisively with self-defeating habits.
