Pastor’s Corner Congratulations to all Patriots and Rams fans. What great games last week. I’m happy to be with you folks this weekend and next, but just in time for the Super Bowl, I’ll be heading south for my annual reunion with friends from seminary. We’ll be together in Maryland this year. I’m hoping to run into my sister and her family from Virginia when we’re down that way too.

In the meantime, thank you for your continued prayers for the school, the parish, and all those involved in our important deci-sions these days.

Finally, if you’re a regular at the 9:00 AM Mass, you’re familiar with the wonderful musical ability of Mrs. Liesl Doty. You may not know that her husband also plays (bass). They’ll be holding a concert at Hosmer this Wednesday. See below for more info. —Fr. Bryan Stitt

UPDATE: Diocesan/Parish Capital Campaign Positive momentum continues to grow for the Capital Cam-paign. As of Jan. 16th, St. Mary’s has raised $323,705.99 from 115 donors. To date we have reached 84% of our goal! When we subtract the amount designated for our Bishop’s Fund Appeal Goal of $35,000 and the 25% designated to the Diocesan Pro-jects (or our indirect needs – Camp Guggenheim, Priest Retire-ment, Education of Seminarians, St Mary’s Cathedral extensive work), so far, the income coming back to St. Mary’s, if all pledges are honored, is $216,529.49 for our needs (The school roof loan, brick repair on the church, the wheelchair ramp and on going religious education for every member of the parish). It is our hope that everyone will participate so that our very much need-ed parish projects will be able to get done. So if you have yet to make a donation or pledge we are really counting on all parish-ioners to make this happen.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Ask Father... Last week our numbers were down a bit. Any idea why?

In response to the cold weather, a few folks have asked me about the Sunday obligation to attend Mass in the light of such weath-er. A couple thoughts that might be helpful:

First, just to review, Catholics have the obligation to participate in Mass and abstain from works and affairs which hinder worship, joy, and relaxation (Code of Canon Law #1247).

Second, if it is impossible to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist because of a grave cause, it is specially recommended to engage in prayer for an appropriate amount of time personally or in a family (Canon 1248).

Third, (and this might go under the category of #littleknownpriestpowers) a pastor can grant in individual cases a dispensation from the obligation of observing Sunday Mass (Canon 1245).

So, the long and short of it, if the weather was sufficiently bad to be considered a serious obstacle (i.e. a “grave cause”) from at-tending any of the three Masses, there’s no obligation. Just like if you were very sick or caring for a sick loved one. Now, if you could have made it, but just didn’t feel like it, well...officially that’s something that you should bring to Confession before re-ceiving Holy Communion again. And if you’re ever in a spot where you are in some grey-in-between area, please feel free to reach out. I am always happy to hear from people that they’re okay, and I’m very open with using my power to give a dispensa-tion.

—Fr. Bryan Stitt

What’s with that light? Do you notice how the light over Father’s chair has a different coloration? Look more closely that’s not all that’s different. A friend of his is an expert on lighting, and highly recommended we try these High Performance, long lasting LED lamps. (No, his friend isn’t a salesman and doesn’t get a commission!!) They are lower wattage (so they use less energy), more lumens (so it’s easier to see), and a warmer color (so it looks nicer in church). We’d love to do them all some-day so as to cut back on our electric bill, but of course, they’re not giving these things away.

Did you know…. Every Wednesday morning parishioners faithful-ly clean our beautiful church at 8:30. Please help them out, try to kick off as much snow from your boots before coming in, and please keep your feet off the kneelers.

Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the sick, we turn to you in this time of illness. O dearest comforter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with your gentle love, and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden. Dear God, we place our worries in your hands. We place our sick under your care and humbly ask that you restore your servant to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge your will and know that whatever you do, you do for the love of us. Amen.

This Week’s

Second Collection:

Last year twenty-one grants were awarded which benefited those working to build a Culture of Life in our diocese. It's im-portant with this year's legislative climate that we provide alter-natives to abortion and help to educate the next generation. The collection provided funds for 7 Gabriel Projects, Plattsburgh Cri-sis Pregnancy Center, Birthright, Right to Life affiliates, 4 pil-grimages to the DC March for Life (two high school, one college and one family bus), 3 Pro-Life County Fair Booths as well as other pro-life efforts.

Principal’s Corner

Catholic Schools Week is just around the Corner

Stay tuned for a complete schedule of the many activities and events that will celebrate our

school, our teachers and our students.

Save the date, February 1oth:As usual, we will start the week with a special Mass followed by a wonderful pancake breakfast sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.

2019 Canton’s Winterfest Church Concerts will be Monday Feb-ruary 11. St. Mary’s will be kicking off the event with the Clergy Soup and Bread dinner from 5pm to 6pm. This is free to the public and music is provided during dinner. The concerts then go from the First Presbyterian Church and end at the United Methodist Church with refreshments. Each church is asked to donate 4 dozen cookies for the end of the event. Cookies are delivered to the United Methodist Church on that day.

Each concert is about 20 minutes and the audience is then escorted to the next church with a bagpiper!

Come join us for good food and music!

Thank you to everyone who assisted with the preparing, cook-ing, delivering and cleaning up of the Christmas Dinners. Our shut-in appreciated the efforts. In some cases, the smiling face of the deliverer was the only person they saw on Christmas din-

CD of the Week:

Admiral Jeremiah Denton spent over seven years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. In this moving presentation, he recalls how, through the power of prayer, he withstood extreme torture rather than betray God or his country. For his valor, he was awarded the Pur-ple Heart, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the Na-vy Cross, and the POW Medal. He is now a champion of various humanitarian causes.
