Welcome to Christ Church! We are delighted that you are
worshipping with us. All baptized persons of every denomination are
welcome to receive communion at our altar. Please introduce
yourself to one of our greeters. Please let an usher know if you are
unable to come to the railing for Communion and the clergy will
come to you.
Are you looking for a church home? You are welcome to fill out a
pew card and place it in the offering plate. On it you can indicate
that you would like the clergy to call on you.
We would love to meet with you at coffee hour after the 10:00 AM
service. We meet in the Deppich Room. Go through the Red Doors
in the right rear of the sanctuary, through the small lobby and turn
left at the first door.
Coffee Hour Donations. Summertime is here so we are asking for
volunteers to sign up to cover a Sunday coffee hour in July, August

Help Fill the Bus! Episcopal Community Services has asked parishes
around the diocese to participate in their “Fill the Bus” program, in
which children at ECS-sponsored summer camps are given new
backpacks filled with school supplies. The Outreach Committee here
at Christ Church is inviting you to take part, by dropping items into
the box at the coatrack at the top of the stairs nearest the kitchen.
Your participation will help ensure that children living in poverty
will be well-supplied for school in the fall, and that their teachers
will be relieved of the burden of supplying children with basic
necessities out of their own pockets. Items needed are number 2
pencils, washable colored markers (wide tip) and sets of 10 fine line
markers, glue sticks, safety scissors, pencil sharpeners, colored
pencils, blue and black pens, highlighters, pink erasers, 2-pocket
folders, pencil cases, protractors, 10-digit scientific calculators,
binders, composition notebooks, spiral notebooks, rulers, packs of
filler paper, both college-ruled and wide-ruled, packs of assorted
construction paper, packs of index cards, packs of 24 crayons, Lysol
wipes, and boxes of tissues. Gender-neutral plain new backpacks are
also gratefully accepted. We will gather whatever we receive and
deliver them to ECS to be distributed in early August to the
children. The deadline by which we must receive these items is July
14.
Contact Update- If you fall in the age range of 5-32(ish) years old
please take a moment to fill out the Youth and Young Adult contact
update form in the back of the sanctuary or find the link on CCRP’s
Facebook page. We are hoping to hear from young adults who grew
up in Christ Church but who have not been coming regularly, so
please take a form to pass on to adult children!

The Lessons
FIRST READING: 2 Kings 2:1-2, 6:14
The people sit.
A Reading from the Second book of Kings.
1Now when the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a
whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2Elijah said
to Elisha, "Stay here; for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel." But
Elisha said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not
leave you." So they went down to Bethel. 6Then Elijah said to him, "Stay
here; for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan." But he said, "As the
LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So the two
of them went on.

PSALM: Psalm 16
Remain seated.
1Protect me, O God, for I take refuge in you; *
I have said to the Lord, “You are my Lord,
my good above all other.”
2All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, *
upon those who are noble among the people.
3But those who run after other gods *
shall have their troubles multiplied.
4Their libations of blood I will not offer, *
nor take the names of their gods upon my lips.
5O LORD, you are my portion and my cup; *
it is you who uphold my lot.
6My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; *
indeed, I have a goodly heritage.
7I will bless the LORD who gives me counsel; *
my heart teaches me, night after night.
8I have set the LORD always before me; *
because he is at my right hand, I shall not fall
. 9My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; *
my body also shall rest in hope.
10For you will not abandon me to the grave, *
nor let your holy one see the Pit.
15
11You will show me the path of life; *
in your presence there is fullness of joy,
and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.
SECOND READING: Galatians 5:1, 13-25
The people sit.
A Reading from Paul's letter to the Church in Galatia.
1For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not
submit again to a yoke of slavery.
13For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use
your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love
become slaves to one another. 14For the whole law is summed up in a
single commandment, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15If,
however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not
consumed by one another.
16Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit
desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to
prevent you from doing what you want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit,
you are not subject to the law. 19Now the works of the flesh are obvious:
fornication, impurity, licentiousness, 20idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife,
jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, 21envy, drunkenness,
carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you
before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23gentleness, and self-control. There is
no law against such things. 24And those who belong to Christ Jesus have
crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25If we live by the Spirit,
let us also be guided by the Spirit.

GOSPEL: Luke 9:51-62
All stand.
Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
according to Luke.
People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
51When the days drew near for [Jesus] to be taken up, he set his face to
go to Jerusalem. 52And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way
they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; 53but they
did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54When
his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to
18
command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55But he
turned and rebuked them. 56Then they went on to another village.
57As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will
follow you wherever you go.” 58And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have
holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to
lay his head.” 59To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord,
first let me go and bury my father.” 60But Jesus said to him, “Let the dead
bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of
God.” 61Another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say
farewell to those at my home.” 62Jesus said to him, “No one who puts a
hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Celebrant
The Gospel of the Lord.
People Praise to you, Lord Christ.
THE SERMON (BCP p. 358)
THE NICENE CREED (BCP p. 358)
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
19
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Hosanna in the highest.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION (BCP p. 362)
The People stand or kneel.
We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you
have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your
people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the
Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to
27
be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the
world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to
stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out
of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and
when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples,
and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for
the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and
when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of
you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and
for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for
the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O
Father,
Celebrant and People
We remember his death,
We proclaim his resurrection,
We await his coming in glory;
The Celebrant continues
EPICLESIS (BCP p. 363)
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of
all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts
that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of
the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be
acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the
fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring
us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the
everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our
Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author
of our salvation.
By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all
honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN
28
THE LORD’S PRAYER (BCP p. 363)
As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,
People and Celebrant
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread
Alleluia. Christ our passover is sacrificed for us
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.
INVITATION (BCP p. 364)

Holy Communion at our altar. You may stand at the altar rail if your knees do not permit

over your chest. Baptized children may receive with parent's permission, otherwise they
will receive a blessing.

...did you know?....
From The First Hundred Years, published Nov.
1979.
In June of 1885 a decision was made which had
great significance for subsequent rectors-to build
the church rectory on the church grounds. The
cost was to be limited to $4500; $3000 to be
raised by mortgage and the rest by subscription. It
is truly amazing that the parts of the rectory fit
together at all, as the method used to build it were
somewhat unique. A building committee was
formed which used no master contractor. Each
portion of the building was put up for contract,
and the lowest bid won. Even though the cost was
higher than has been expected, and the
subscriptions were not all met, so the mortgage
had to be increased to $3500. Finished in June,
1886, the rector and his family moved in August,
some say they wanted to be sure it would stand
up.
