CUANDO NO TENER LO SUFICIENTE ES MÁS QUE SUFICIENTE

There is not enough rain. There is not enough oi l . There are not enough jobs. There is not enough room on the freeways. There is not enough money. There is not enough t ime. When we think there is not enough, panic can set in. What are we going to do? How wi l l we survive wi thout enough water, how wi l l we get around i f there is not enough gas, what is to become of our fami ly i f there is not enough money? Feel ings of insecuri ty run very high. Uncertainty about the future is unsett l ing.

Shortages are certainly not new. In the Gospel story there is not enough food to feed the thousands that are gathered to l isten to Jesus (John 6:1-15). Lacking

the amount of money i t would take to buy food for the huge crowd, and seeing that the only food in sight are five barley loaves and two fish, the si tuation looks di re. It is at this moment that Jesus turns the si tuation of ?not enough? into a scene of more than enough. He sees in the five loaves and two fish a huge feast and says thank you to his Father. Out of that grati tude comes plenty of food for al l , in fact there is more than enough, as twelve baskets of leftovers are col lected.

The not enough food that became more than enough was a prelude to Jesus? action of fi l l ing al l those who bel ieve in him wi th the only food that can truly fi l l up our l ives, the Bread of Li fe of the Eucharist. It is this food that strengthens us to name and to take action on the true shortages in our world. Shortages l ike food, clothing, shelter, education, health care and gainful employment for mi l l ions. Shortage of space for refugees fleeing from war and violence in thei r own countries. Shortage of tolerance for people from di fferent countries, cultures and rel igions. These and so many more shortages can tempt us to think that we wi l l never have enough of what is needed to address them. It can look l ike two t iny fish and five l i t t le loaves to feed thousands.

On the hi l lside that day, not enough became more than enough. Nourished and strengthened by the Eucharist, our sometimes frantic cries of not enough can become hope-fi l led hungers for a world of justice and peace.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS)Vacation Bible School is in one week! July 30-Aug. 3, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Arboretum. Each day your chi ld wi l l learn about Scripture and about God's love through singing, arts and crafts, and performing Bible stories.We are ask ing you to cooperate wi th us in the fol lowing ways to help make this one week of Vacation Bible School a valuable experience for the chi ldren:

1. Drop students off between 8:45 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. in the ARBORETUM. 2. Pick them up at 1:00 p.m. in the ARBORETUM. 3. Have them wear VBS T-shi r t dai ly (wi l l be distributed on Monday, July 30).

On Monday, July 30, please join us for the opening Mass in the Arboretum at 10:00 a.m. On Friday, Aug. 3, we invi te you to join us for the closing Thanksgiving Mass in the Arboretum at 11:00 a.m. and to wi tness the chi ldren preform Bible sk i ts. What is RCIA and who is it f or ? The Ri te of Christ ian Ini t iat ion of Adults (RCIA) is a process whereby new members join the Cathol ic Church, designed speci fical ly for the fol lowing:

1. Adults who have never been baptized and who want to inqui re about the Cathol ic fai th. 2. Adults who have been baptized into another Christ ian tradi t ion (Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist, etc.) who

want to inqui re about the Cathol ic fai th. 3. Baptized Cathol ic adults who have not completed the Sacraments of Fi rst Holy Communion and

Confi rmation and need more fai th formation. There is open enrol lment now. We wi l l be having registrat ion before and after al l Masses on Sundays in August. Mar r iage Annul ment Pr esentat ionSome people wonder why the Cathol ic Church regulates marriage and may even question her authori ty to declare the inval idi ty of a part icular marriage. Al l are invi ted to learn about this and much more at a presentation on Thursday, August 2 at St. Polycarp Parish Hal l (8100 Chapman Ave. in Stanton). It wi l l be from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The presentation wi l l be given by Msgr. Stephen Doktorczyk, Vicar General for the Diocese of Orange.

No hay suficiente l luvia. No hay suficiente acei te. No hay suficientes puestos de trabajo. No hay suficiente espacio en las autopistas. No hay suficiente dinero. No hay t iempo suficiente. Cuando pensamos que no es suficiente, el pánico puede establecer en nosotros. ¿Qué vamos a hacer? ¿Cómo se sobrevive sin suficiente agua?, ¿cómo podremos usar nuestros automóvi les si no hay suficiente gas?, ¿qué será de nuestra fami l ia sin suficiente dinero? Los sentimientos de inseguridad están muy exaltados. Incert idumbre sobre el futuro es inquietante.

La escasez no es algo nuevo. En la historia del evangel io no hay suficiente comida para al imentar a los mi les que se reunieron a escuchar a Jesús (Juan 6:1-15). Falta la cantidad de dinero que tomaría para comprar comida para la gran mult i tud, y viendo que el único al imento a la vista es cinco panes de cebada y dos peces, la si tuación parece grave. Es en este momento que Jesús transforma la si tuación de "no suficiente" en una escena de más que suficiente. Ve en los cinco panes y dos peces, una gran fiesta y le da gracias a su padre. Es de esta grati tud que viene suficiente comida para todos, de hecho hay más que suficiente ya que se recogen doce canastas de sobras.

No es suficiente que se convi r t ió en más que suficiente es un preludio a la acción de Jesús de l lenar todos los que creen en él con el único al imento que realmente puede l lenar nuestras vidas, el pan de vida de la Eucaristía. Es este al imento que nos fortalece para nombrar y para tomar medidas sobre la escasez verdadera en nuestro mundo. Escasez como al imentos, ropa, abrigo, educación, empleos y cuidado de la salud de mi l lones. Escasez de espacio para los refugiados que huyen de la guerra y la violencia en sus propios países. Escasez de tolerancia para las personas de di ferentes países, culturas y rel igiones. Estas y tanta más escasez puede l levarnos a pensar que nunca tendremos suficiente de lo que se necesi ta para resolverlos. Parece tan insigni ficante como dos pequeños peces y cinco panes pequeños para al imentar a mi les.

En el monte ese día, no suficiente se convi r t ió en una escena de más que suficiente. Viviendo desde un lugar de grati tud y al imentados por la Eucaristía, nuestro clamor frenético de insuficiente puede convert i rse en hambres l lenada de esperanza para un mundo de justicia y paz. Tal vez un día sólo puede haber más que suficiente.

¿Qué es RICA y par a quién es? El Ri to de Iniciación Crist iana para Adultos (RICA) es el proceso en donde nuevos miembros se unen a la Iglesia Catól ica, diseñado específicamente para lo siguiente:
