Staying Safe While Voting

Tips for Voters

Vote by mail if you are eligible. See “Vote By Mail Guidance” below to

determine your eligibility. Applications to vote by mail are available at

harrisvotes.com.

Wear a face covering that fits snugly against your face. This helps keep you

safe, as well as ensuring the safety of other voters and poll workers.

Maintain a 6-foot distance from others. Note that polling locations will be

set up differently to allow for additional space between machines while you

cast your ballot.

Wash your hands frequently, including before and after voting.

Consider voting early as a way to avoid long lines or potentially crowded

polling locations. Voters can also plan to vote during non-peak hours, like

the middle of the morning and afternoon.

Vote by mail if you have fever, respiratory symptoms, or believe you are

sick.

New Safety Protocols

When you arrive at the polling location, there will be some new process

and procedures in place to keep voters, poll workers, and the general public

safe.

Poll workers will be provided with Personal Protection Equipment.

Each polling location will have a sanitization station to provide hand

sanitizer before and after voting.

Voting machines will be placed 6 feet apart to allow for social distancing.

There will be markers indicating where to stand to ensure social distancing

while voters are waiting to be checked in.

Voters will be given finger covers so that they can operate the voting

machine without physically touching it.

Vote By Mail Guidance There are four ways to qualify for a ballot by mail:

1. If you are 65 years of age or older on Election Day; 2. If you are away from the county of residence on Election Day (July 14) and

during the Early Voting period (June 29 – July 10); 3. If you are confined in jail, but otherwise eligible to vote; or 4. If you are disabled. Please see below to determine if you qualify as

disabled. A voter qualifies as disabled if they believe that their physical condition is such that “in-person voting will cause a likelihood of injury” to their health. Pregnant women are also covered in the disability category. So what does that mean in the age of coronavirus? The Texas Supreme Court ruled last week that a lack of immunity to COVID may be considered as a factor in determining whether in-person voting creates a “likelihood of injury” to the voter’s health, but it can’t be the sole factor. It is the responsibility of voters to make their own health determinations, and the County Clerk’s Office does not have the authority to question the voter’s judgment.1 If the voter fills out a vote-by-mail application and indicates one of the four grounds under which they would be eligible to receive a ballot by mail, the Clerk’s Office must accept that application as-is and send the voter a ballot.
