As I write this, I am fast forwarding to my New Year’s resolutions.

Several times, I have vowed to exercise, join a gym (which for those who know me, this is funny). Sometimes, I have resolved to eat healthier or work less. With the arrival of 2020, we’re taking a new look at ICHRIE operations to make sure things are operating with optimum efficiency. Over the years, we’ve put systems in place that have worked quite well but as any efficiency expert will tell you, just because it worked ten years ago doesn’t mean it works now.

Just think about the difference twenty years has made in how we operate at work. We have new technologies and innovations with which to work and stay connected—faster computers, electronic work pads, online social networking groups, smart phone apps and QR codes to name just a few. Things we couldn’t even fathom twenty years ago are now commonplace.

The latest technologies our children now take for granted as a way of everyday life have made a huge impact on the way we live and work. Most people working today would likely put the Internet and smart phones pretty high up on our list of life-changing discoveries. The same cannot be said for centenarians. One poll commissioned by United Healthcare Medicare and Retirement showed that although people 100 or older have lived through two world wars, witnessed the advent of space exploration and the birth of the Internet, 44 percent said the one innovation that made the biggest impact on their lives was the electric refrigerator followed by color television. The Internet and smart phones were much lower on the list.

As we look at ICHRIE operations and how we can increase/improve member benefits, we are faced with a similar challenge—our membership is made up of an extremely diverse population representing multiple generation spans. Perceived value is relative and our analyses must take that into consideration.

We’ve added many new things over the past few years to the list of ICHRIE benefits—the ICHRIE Johnson & Wales Case Study Competition, the STR data partnership, the Knowledge Matters simulation competitions, the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Cases e-journal, the ICHRIE Research Reports and the Hcareers talent and career management partnership.

We need to make sure that the operational systems in place support both ongoing and any new initiatives. It takes time and financial resources to upgrade systems, but it is a changing world out there and we have to adapt to the changing technologies and new innovations. With a diverse, multi-generational membership we need to be doing the right things in the right way.

Over the next few months we will be asking you—the member—to give us input on and ideas for how we can make your ICHRIE membership have more meaningful value. When you get a request to complete an ICHRIE survey, please take a few minutes to complete it. We’ll try to construct the survey instruments so you can complete them in just a few minutes. Your responses are critical in our analyses of ICHRIE products, services and operations. I thank you in advance for your willingness to help as we try to improve perceived value.

A Look Ahead: Officer Positions for 2021Chris Roberts is Immediate Past President of ICHRIE & Professor at DePaul University.

Notes & News from the Board

We recently finished voting for the open 2020 ICHRIE board of director

positions during November-December 2019. Thank you for voting and thank you to all of those members that were on the slate. It takes courage, certainly, to place one’s name forward for consideration. Their willingness to serve in these voluntary leadership positions is highly valued. While it can be time consuming and at times challenging to wrestle with ICHRIE ongoing issues and concerns, it can also be very rewarding to know that you have contributed to solutions that help all of our members.

I want to suggest that you think of offering yourself for leadership service starting in 2021 (next year). We will have five (5) open board positions. Hopefully, one or more will be of interest and fit you well. We will be looking for the following: Vice President, Secretary, Director of Education, Director of Marketing, and Director of Networking.

There are minimum requirements for these positions. All candidates must have been a member of ICHRIE for a minimum of three years. For VP or Secretary, candidates must have served as a member of the ICHRIE Board or as federation officer. For Director positions, candidates must have served as a member of an ICHRIE committee or as federation officer.

Vice President. The VP position is a three-year commitment and is a member of the Executive Committee. The elected individual would serve the first year as VP, the second year as ICHRIE President, and the third year as Immediate Past President (IPP). The VP chairs the Strategic Planning Committee and serves as liaison with the Eta Sigma Delta honor society. Candidates need to supply a letter of support from their institution of employment for a three-year commitment to attend at least four meetings a year (January, May, July, and November).

Secretary. The secretary is a two-year position and is a member of the Executive Committee. The secretary can be reelected for a second two-year term. In cooperation with ICHRIE staff, the Secretary will keep the minutes of all Board meetings, Executive Committee meetings, all business meetings of ICHRIE, and other ICHRIE records as appropriate. The Secretary chairs the Bylaws Committee consisting of six Federation Secretaries and Presidential appointees. Candidates need to supply a letter of

support from their institution of employment for a two-year commitment to attend at least four meetings a year (January, May, July, and November).

Education. The Director of Education is a two-year position and can be reelected for a second two-year term. The Director of Education chairs the Education Committee, which develops and drives educational initiatives. Sub committees of the Education Committee include the ICHRIE publications, and the Professional Development Committee. The Education Committee includes the six Federation Directors of Education, the Chair of the Professional Development Committee, and appointees of the President. Candidates need to supply a letter of support from their institution of employment for a two-year commitment to attend at least two meetings a year (January and July).

Marketing. In cooperation with ICHRIE staff, the Director of Marketing represents ICHRIE to outside associations, organizations, and governments, giving ICHRIE visibility and credibility within the global service industry, especially through use of our social media channels. This director chairs the Marketing Committee, which includes the six Federation Directors of Marketing and Presidential appointees. The Director of Marketing works cooperatively with all board members to generate promotional initiatives for ICHRIE. Candidates need to supply a letter of support from their institution of employment for a two-year commitment to attend at least two meetings a year (January and July).

Networking. The Director of Networking chairs the Networking Committee and the Special Interest Group (SIG) Council, which both operate to maximize member networking opportunities. The Networking Committee includes six Federation Directors of Networking, the ICHRIE Director of the Conference, the Chair of the SIG Council, and appointees of the President. Candidates need to supply a letter of support from their institution of employment for a two-year commitment to attend at least two meetings a year (January and July).

What does it take to be nominated? It’s very easy. Any colleague who is a member of ICHRIE can nominate you. Or, you can self-nominate. I just need your name and a brief mention as you why you might be great for the position. Send me this information to me via email [email protected] or contact the ICHRIE office. I’ll take your nominations to the committee. That group will review the nominations and, during the spring of 2020, build the election slate for 2021. (The voting for the 2021 slate will be Nov-Dec, 2020.)

We have moved the entire nomination and election process earlier than before. This was done so that the newly

What are our priorities for 2020? This is an important year as we make amendments to our Bylaws, which are much needed. Thank you to Bill Frye for spearheading this effort. Similarly, based on a 2016 report commissioned by the ICHRIE Board and conducted by Fenich, Brown, and Cecil, the Board of Directors has approved Seattle, Vancouver, Minneapolis, and potentially another Canadian city as site options for the 2022 annual conference. The Board of Directors has been asked by the conference committee and the executive committee to consider an outside Site Selection company for assistance in choosing the best city for the 2022 conference. The board must work fast to make that happen; as John Wayne would say in the movie “The Cowboys” we are burning daylight. Finally, the COR recommended that a committee be formed to develop language that addresses the lack of performance by a Board member. While a committee has been formed, additional work must be accomplished by the end of 2020.

What else do we need to work on? Based on our priorities, ICHRIE members, board, and staff must work together to achieve these, along with other initiatives that come from the ICHRIE committees that work to sustain our Association. A more specific code of ethics, similar to the Academy of Management and other professional associations that have general principles similar to our own, should be crafted. These tenets, which include responsibility, integrity, and the respect for people’s rights and dignity should be consistent with the Mission, Vision, and Values of our organization. Vice President Joy Dickerson is working with the Strategic Planning Committee to address some of these issues.

One more thing – ICHRIE at 75 years. For 74 years, we have been the International Council of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (ICHRIE). For many, including our European members, the question of what ‘Institutional’ means as it relates to the hospitality industry is unclear or old fashioned. Further, our industry/academy has changed over the past 74 years to include private clubs,

ESDEta Sigma DeltaFrom the desk of Ruth Lee O’Rourke

Chair of the ESD Board of Governors & Lecturer at James Madison University

New HorizonsAs we usher in a new year, the ESD Board of Governors have been hard at work with three New Initiatives for the spring 2020 semester. The creation of the inaugural ESD Newsletter has been sent out at the beginning of January. There is valuable information with spotlights one sponsors, faculty advisors, students and more! All active ESD chapters will receive the newsletter once a semester. We have a new sponsorship flyer that outlines the value proposition for industry to partner with ESD on future

student events. The third initiative is a new rubric for ESD faculty advisors to use as they work with their student leadership on submissions for Chapter of Distinction.

Thank you to the ESD Board of Governors for all you do!

    Thank you Ruth

other. Or perhaps we choose to give someone the benefit of the doubt, even if we think they’re in the wrong. As stand-alone deeds, these are examples of service; but when we can genuinely connect with an individual from these acts, we set the table for soulful hospitality.

As I have reflected on this notion of “soulful hospitality”, it occurs to me that it IS something that I can practice without giving up by the end of January! It’s not hard, it doesn’t take a lot of extra energy, it costs nothing, it does not interrupt my daily routine, and it could have a positive impact on others. What it DOES take is self-awareness and a willingness to “reset” when negativity sets in.

We’re all a part of this amazing hospitality profession, so it seems we should be pros at practicing meaningful, authentic hospitality on an everyday, every-hour basis. But I have to say, it’s easy to forego (at least for me) when pressed for time and energy, or when emotions begin to run high. As a group of hospitality professionals, I wonder if any of you might join me in this quest for soulful hospitality in 2020!

As I consider our work together for ICHRIE, it seems we could accomplish so much if we work together in the spirit of true hospitality. Our Strategic Planning Committee is currently working together to re-evaluate our core values, mission, and vision. The core values and mission will provide the foundation for “who” we are, what our purpose is, and how we conduct ourselves and this organization. Further, the committee is developing a member survey, which will be sent to you

event planning, cruise lines, and many other segments of the industry we love so much. Cheki Dev, an expert in hospitality branding and distinction from Cornell reached out to me recently with a suggestion of a slight renaming of ICHRIE. He suggested that ICHRIE is the “International Council for Hospitality Research, Instruction, and Engagement”. What do you think? I would agree with Cheki that the suggested transformation offers a true insight into who we are as an association and a brand.

Celebrating MLK This year, January 20, 2020 is MLK day. This day is traditionally recognized as the national day of service; let us all be involved in helping our local communities - especially those that are underserved.

As always, thank you for being a member of ICHRIE – I look forward to working with you in our year of vision – 2020.

by early February. We need you to participate! Your voice is important! The strength of our organization will depend on our interconnectedness. Feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions.

Here’s to soulful hospitality in 2020! Best wishes for a very happy, healthy and productive new year!
