250THANNIVERSARYThough 2012 will
mark the official 250thyear of Shepherdstown,the celebrationlaunched its yearlongseries of events alongwith the annualChristmas inShepherdstown kickoffin December. Thelaunch featured a spe-cial address by MayorJim Auxer as well as aspecial 250-themed icesculpture installation,among other events.
FREEDOM’S RUNFreedom’s Run
returned in 2011 andonce again attractedthousands from aroundthe globe to theShepherdstown area.This year, though metwith chillier tempera-tures and rain, the runmaintained its positivemission. Organized byMark Cucuzzella andLois Turco, Freedom’sRun is billed as a runfor health and heritage.The marathon, which
runs through fournational parks and con-cludes in historicShepherdstown, contin-ued its quest to marrythe promotion of physi-cal activity with appre-ciation for the region’sunique history.
MORGAN’S GROVEREZONING VOTEThe Jefferson County
Commission voted torefuse a request torezone property ownedby local resident PeterCorum, located justoutside ofShepherdstown besideMorgan’s Grove Park.In a decision that drewattention from newsorganizations all overthe region, the JeffersonCounty Commissioneventually sided with avocal group ofShepherdstown resi-dents, Mayor JimAuxer and theShepherdstownPlanning Commissionwho all wrote letters orspoke out in an effortto sway the commis-
sioners to vote againstthe request.Community ClubPresident Mike Austinwas instrumental inraising awarenessabout the possiblerezoning and has sinceled an effort to start aFriends of Morgan’sGrove Park group tofurther preserve andprotect the park.
CEMENT MILLPURCHASED
After months ofeffort, the JeffersonCounty HistoricLandmarksCommission purchasedthe “Cement Mill”property located alongRiver Road inShepherdstown. Theacquisition was madepossible in part by agrant secured by Del.John Doyle and contri-butions from variouslocal and regionalorganizations.
HISTORIC DIS-TRICTS GO SOLARIn April, the
ShepherdstownPlanning Commissionapproved a permit forresident Nathaniel Hittto place photovoltaicson his garage, makingHitt one of the first res-idents to have solarpanels in the historicdistrict. Since lastspring, conversationhas continued withregard to amendmentof rules associated withthe allowance of solarpanels on
