Texas birding trip planned The Potomac Valley Audubon Society is seek- ing expressions of inter- est in a nine-day birding trip to the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas next spring. The trip is tentatively scheduled for March 30 to April 7. It will be led by local birding expert Matt Orsie and include a special guided tour of the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, which hosts the largest wild flock of Whooping Cranes. Other stops will include the Laguna Atascosa and Kerr National Wildlife Refuges, the Sable Palm Bird Sanctuary, the Frontera Audubon Preserve and a variety of state and county parks that are birding hotspots. Anyone with an inter- est is welcome to partici- pate. A minimum of four people will be required to make the trip viable. The maximum number of participants will be seven. The Society will charge no fees of its own but each participant will have to cover his or her own costs. The estimated basic cost per person will be $1,400. This will include all airline and hotel charges and fees for guides and entry to bird- ing sites. Costs of meals, car rental and other pos- sible expenses will be extra. Opting for double occupancy at hotels would reduce accommo- dation costs substantially. Anyone interested in participating in the trip should contact Matt Orsie at wvbird- [email protected] or 304- 261-5602 by January 15. Barbara Feldman, a nationally recognized martial arts instructor and owner of Blue Heron Martial and Healing Arts in Charles Town, will offer a new class on the “Fundamentals of Qigong and Tai Chi Chuan” beginning Jan. 4, 2012, at Harmony Healing Arts Center, 211 East New Street, Shepherdstown. The class is perfect for begin- ners or experienced prac- titioners of either disci- pline and fully accessible to the young, not-so- young and for people recovering from injuries. It will be held from 11 a.m. to noon each Wednesday for 11 weeks. Qigong (or Chi-gung) is an ancient Chinese practice of cultivating and unifying mind, body and spirit. It does this through slow fluid move- ment and stillness in the body, balancing and nur- turing the qi (chi) or energy and deep abdomi- nal breathing techniques. The main purposes of qigong have been longevity, increased health and well-being, spiritual development, preventative and restora- tive medicine and martial ability. Tai Chi Chuan has all of the benefits of qigong in addition to being a martial art. The require- ments shared by Tai Chi and Qigong are few: the ability to relax the body, focus the mind, and prac- tice regularly. The class is intended to provide the basics for a solid qigong practice and for develop- ing the fundamentals of tai chi. A professional educa- tor with over 35 years experience teaching, Feldman has practiced the martial arts for 32 years and the healing arts for 28. She holds black belts in two styles of karate, including a 5th degree black belt in Ai Mute Shotokan.
