Charles F.Printz
Charles F. Printz, aretired college professorand certified publicaccountant, died at hishome in the presence ofhis family on Sept. 30,2011. Hewas 96.Born July 18, 1915, in
Ranson,W.Va., he was theson of Charles B. PrintzandMattie Booton Printz,both deceased. He is sur-vived by his wife of 65years, Bethel H. Printz;two children, Charles F.Printz, Jr. of Martinsburgandwife, Donna, MaryBeth Printz ofAnchorage,Alaska; and three grand-children, Matthew B.Printz of Charles Townandwife, Jessica,AllisonM. Printz of NewYork,N.Y., andMikaelaMulderofAnchorage,Alaska. Histhree older sisters, LucilleB. Printz ofWinchester,Va., Mae P. BaumgardnerofWinchester, Va., andAlice P. Jenkins of
Millwood, Va., prede-ceased him. He is also sur-vived by three nieces andtheir families, NancyPakter of Berkeley, Calif.,Patricia Fynn ofMillwood, Va., and EllenNewsom of Poquosan, Va.Mr. Printz was commit-
ted to excellence in highereducation. He graduatedfromCharles TownHighSchool in 1934 andreceived a business degreefrom Shepherd College in1940. He taught briefly atBerkeley Springs HighSchool and then enteredWest Virginia University,earning aMaster’s ofBusinessAdministrationdegree in 1942. FollowingWorldWar II, he wasemployed as a associateprofessor of businessadministration atShepherd in 1947. Hewasappointed chairman of theBusiness Division in 1950,a position he held for 31years until his retirementin 1981. His department atone time accounted for 31percent of the enrollmentat Shepherd.While at Shepherd, Mr.
Printz worked to raiseadmission and transferstandards. He foundedDelta Sigma Pi, a businessfraternity, directed theShepherdAlumniAssociation and formedalumni chapters in all
Eastern Panhandle andsouth branch valley coun-ties. He was appointed tothe board of the ShepherdUniversity Foundationand as treasurer of theScarborough Society.Following his retirement,he was appointed to andserved on theWestVirginia Board of Regentsby former Gov.ArchMoore for five years. Forhis service in higher edu-cation, he was named anOutstandingAlumnus byShepherd University andan OutstandingWestVirginian by Gov. JayRockefeller.DuringWorldWar II,
as a U.S. Navy ensign, heserved aboard the USSChincoteague, a seaplanetender, in the SouthPacific, andwas laterassigned to the SeventhFleet in Brisbane,Australia where heworked in intelligencethere and under Gen.DouglasMacArthur’sadvanced headquarters inPapua, NewGuinea. Hewas then assigned to theCommander Service ForcePacific Fleet, the BritishPacific Fleet and theCaribbean Sea Frontier inMiami, Fla., at the war’send. He served on inac-tive duty as administra-tive personnel officer atBelling air Force Base and
was promoted to com-mander in that position.He retired as Commander,United States NavalReserves, in 1978.In 1960, Mr. Printz
became the first CertifiedPublicAccountant in theEastern Panhandle. Hewas the owner of CharlesF. Printz and CompanyCPA’s. In addition to thisaccounting practice, hewas actively involved innumerous business inter-ests, including Kable OilCompany, JeffersonFinance Company,Peoples Supply andPeoples Supply FarmMachinery. Hewasappointed director ofBlakeley Bank and TrustCompany and the SmallBusinessAdministration.Since 1972, he has ownedand operatedAspen PoolFarm nearShepherdstown.Active in community
affairs, he was amemberof the Charles TownKiwanis Club, where heserved as president and asthe districts lieutenantgovernor. Hewas amem-ber of the ShepherdstownMen’s Club, the CharlesTown Lions Club and theOld Opera House. Hewas parishioner of TrinityEpiscopal Church, wherehe served as treasurer formany years. Hewas a
member ofMalta Lodge80, Charles Town. Hewaselected to one term on theJefferson County Board ofEducation and served asrecorder for the City ofCharles Town. He is afoundingmember of theGatewayNew EconomyCouncil.Patriotismwas impor-
tant toMr. Printz. Hewaspart of the program atnumerousMemorial Dayceremonies at Edge HillCemetery in CharlesTown. He commander ofPost 71 of theAmericanLegion in Charles Townandwas Chef de Guerreof La Societe desQuarante Hommes etHuit Chevaux (Forty andEight) in the EasternPanhandle. Hewas activein the Retired OfficersAssociation. Hewas presi-dent of the VirginiaSociety of theWar of 1812andwas commander ofthe Henry KydDouglasCamp, Sons of theConfederacy. Hewas ded-icated to the Sons of theAmerican Revolution.He was President
General of the AdamStephens Chapter, Sonsof the AmericanRevolution from 1978 to2009, building the chap-ter to over 100 mem-bers, the largest in WestVirginia.
He was presidentgeneral of the WestVirginia Society, Sons ofthe AmericanRevolution. from 1978to 1981, and in 1988,was elected presidentgeneral of the NationalSociety of the Sons ofthe AmericanRevolution, the onlyWest Virginian to holdthat post. He was laterhonored with theNational Society’s high-est award, theMinuteman Award.Among his hobbies
was an avid interest ingenealogy. After 20 yearsof research, he published“Into the Valley, a PrintzFamily History”Amemorial service
